InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows ReviewSome of the visual quickstart books are better than the others. This one is one of the best in the whole bunch!
The author really knows her stuff. She covers every important aspect of the program in a fun, easy to read style. The step-by-step lessons are incredibly easy to follow. You don't need any special files to learn the program. Just open the book to any page and learn the specific task you need to know.
The book is organized not just by the program's features, but by the type of projects you'd be working on. For instance, the chapter on Long Documents has all the exercises you'd want for those type of files.
The author also has some very good background stories about working in advertising and design. So you learn not just InDesign, but about things like spot color, preparing files for printing, and working with PDFs.
There are plenty of books that cost twice the price of this one. But you can't find anything as good for this price.InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows Overview

Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels Review"Making Comics" is true to its title -- it's very well suited for folks eager to learn the craft of "making comics." I teach a Sequential Art class at California State University, Fullerton and I have made it a required reading book, because it so solidly articulates the elements of comic art from the perspective of the artist. McCloud has been teaching comics at workshops and guest speaking engagements across the country. His having been in the teacher's seat manifestly helps make his points all the more applicable and meaningful. For instance, McCloud uses examples from comics from around the world (Asian mangas, Eurocomics or BD, Western superheroes and alternative comics) that will resonate with modern audiences who perceive comics as more than the "mainstream" superhero comics. "Making Comics" casts the same clarity and passion that made "Understanding Comics" so compelling, and it is not as speculative as "Reinventing Comics." Readers of "Understanding Comics" may find that "Making Comics" covers a lot of the same ground, and that is inevitable (so if you are more into analyzing comics rather than making your own, "Understanding Comics" is for you). In a nutshell, Making Comics is a solid starting point for budding and eager comic artists!Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels Overview

Digital Photography: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) ReviewThere are definitely better books out there. There are several great pictures in the book but the author leaves out one of the most important parts: the settings used to take the photo (lens, f-stop, etc.)For basic information check out Scott Kelby's The Digial Photography Book and for detailed info The Better Photo Guide to Digital Photography is great. It gives you quick lessons as well as all the settings used to shoot the pictures discussed in the book. Again the book is okay but I feel there are a lot better ones out there.Digital Photography: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) Overview

AutoCAD 2006 For Dummies ReviewMiddlebrook writes in a deliberately breezy and informal style that is characteristic of the Dummies series. He explains the very latest 2006 version of AutoCAD. Necessarily, in an introductory book, he does not go very deep into the full extent of AutoCAD. But given just a minimal maths background on your part, you should be able to quickly lay out simple two and three dimensional objects using his advice. That maths mostly involves a good grasp of trigonometry and algebra.
If you are already familiar with the 2005 or earlier recent versions of AutoCAD, then avoid this book. You already know enough that you should get a more advanced text on 2006.AutoCAD 2006 For Dummies Overview

Introducing Maya 5: 3D for Beginners ReviewThis book is extremely well written. Each chapter is explained thoroughly enough so that if you are truly a beginner opening Maya for the first time you will easily be able to follow instructions. The terminology used in the book is at a level where all can follow. He touched upon each aspect of Maya with enough detail to give a strong basis of understanding for the program. I especially like where he created a detailed model using primitives and simple modeling tools (i.e. catapult). He succesfully uses the same project to show several different concepts of 3D as you advance through the book.Introducing Maya 5: 3D for Beginners OverviewAlias Wavefront's Maya is the premier tool for 3D modeling, animation, and rendering. It is used by such film houses as Industrial, Light & Magic, Pixar, and Disney for creating 3D animation and special effects. This Maya Press title—a cooperative publication between Sybex and Alias Wavefront—is the perfect introduction to 3D and Maya.
Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

3ds Max at a Glance ReviewAs a teacher of 3D Computer Graphics I have always enjoyed this author's books (his [digital] Character Animation text are great). I agree that the tutorials are tricky, as is the hippo and car in his Maya at a Glance book. But there are very few books out there that visually give a good general overview of the major concepts and tools of 3DS Max the way that this text does. The person who wrote the negative review about the book shouldn't have bought the text in the first place - everyone has a different learning style.
So if you want to not only read about, but see all the different things Max has to offer, and know that there is not an Art of 3DS Max as there is an Art of Maya that serves as a great reference, definitely consider adding this text to your library. I would recommend it for teachers, and newbies and novices who are still learning the basics of 3D.3ds Max at a Glance Overview

Java in Easy Steps ReviewJava In Easy Steps offers a brief and superficial overview of Java syntax and some common classes. You can quickly learn to produce simple programs. With more work, and some imagination, you may be able to produce more complex ones.
However, you will not master Java without looking elsewhere. As soon as you step outside the walled garden of its pre-programmed examples, you will encounter issues for which the book provides no guidance.
For example: the book shows you how to catch an exception, but not how to throw one. Neither does it explore various related issues such as the difference between checked and unchecked exceptions, or the need to provide throw specifications as part of a method's signature. This stuff is important. You can't write serious Java without knowing about it.
Another example: I see no explanation of the difference between the equality operator ("==") and the Object.equals() method. If you naively compare two Strings with "==", you probably won't get the results you might reasonably expect. It took me some head-scratching to figure that out,
You can run the examples on your own system, but that's just an exercise in typing. There are no exercises inviting you to modify or extend the examples. Of course, if you can't come up with your own exercises, you're probably not cut out to be a programmer anyway.
In all fairness, the many syntax errors in the examples do provide opportunities to practice the important art of deciphering the compiler's error messages. As it happened, I created plenty of opportunities on my own, and didn't need the help.
I noticed a more serious error in the section on writing files. A sidebar claims that the BufferedWriter.append() method adds text to the end of a file, without overwriting the existing contents. Suspicious, I tried it, and it didn't work. The append() method appears to have exactly the same effect as the write() method. If you want to avoid overwriting an existing file, you need to open the file differently, which in the case of the example happens when you construct the FileWriter.
I had already spent a number of years working with C++ and various other languages. Someone without any programming background will no doubt experience the book differently. I fear that the book may provide a beginner with the illusion of mastery.
Java In Easy Steps will get you off the ground quickly, but it won't teach you to fly.

Take Your iPad to Work ReviewI selected this book because I've been an iPad user since the first month it came out. I've consistently tried using my iPad at work in a number of ways and am still tweaking my ways I use it at work to be most effective. So when I had the opportunity to read this book I thought it would be great! A book on using your ipad at work, how neat...
Well this book is a great book... for beginner ipad owners that have no idea what to do with the iPad. The book is approx 350 pages long and the author spends the first 96 pages telling you first what an ipad is (2 pages) to what the buttons are on the ipad and how it works.... This has nothing to do with using the iPad at work, this has to do with remedial iPad use. This is beginner stuff. I would imagine you wouldn't attempt to use an iPad at work without some basic understanding of it.
This book spent 1/3 of it's length with remedial information, for any current iPad user you can fly by pages 1-100 and start out on chapter 7 which is where the business apps really start coming into play where the author writes about iWork. But then a few chapters later they talk about setting up a twitter page and facebook pages... ??? More content not relevant in my opinion to using your iPad at work.
I don't get it. This is a fantastic book for the beginner to iPads, NOT someone who has been using one and is looking for tips on "taking your iPad to work." If this book was "you just got an iPad FROM work and you have no idea how to use it" then sure cover the basics, but this is TAKING YOUR IPAD TO WORK. In other words you own it, you play with it, you know the basics. Show me the good stuff, give me tips, techniques to use it in meetings, ways to be more productive.
If you want a book for beginners get this, if you want a book for anyone that has had an iPad for more then a week you should probably skip on this.
Oh and a lot of the apps they discuss in this book are the higher dollar apps. iWork is $10 a piece for 3 apps totaling $30, I personally use google docs which is free or a DocsToGo which is $14 total for similar functionality where you save over 50% over iWork. They don't mention GoodReader which I found over the last year to be the best reader for PDF's, docs, etc and is only a dollar. They talk about LogMeIn which I do have but is $30 and there are other free options that are suitable. Almost every app they mention is one of the more expensive apps in the Apple app store, there ARE a few cheap/free mentions but this book really doesn't do justice to the selection of apps out there that are much cheaper and in most cases more effective.
For a beginner like I said who needs help this will be good, but for anyone else I would pass on this.

Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography 2.0: Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Better Digital Images Featuring Adobe Photoshop® Elements® ReviewI'm giving this book four stars based almost solely on Rick Sammon's enthusiasm. He is obviously a person who enjoys what he does and likes interacting with others. His writing was lively enough so I read the book in one afternoon. The bottom line problem with this guide is the same bottom line problem I'm finding in all digital photography guides I've encountered. The first thing they want to do is teach you a little basic photography knowledge and the next thing they do is tell you how to use Photoshop tricks to create "artful photos" that, in effect, minimizes the need for knowledge of basic photography. Photography is more than tricks and "secrets of the pros" and Photoshop is a fine tool for photographers to augment their work. Unfortunately, most digital photography teaching vehicles today emphasize the ghastly and tasteless manipulations in Photoshop and fail to emphasize learning basic camera technique. To Rick Sammon's credit, he does provide a measure of how to use tools available for in-camera control as opposed to relying solely on Photoshop corrections and manipulations in post production. But when the chapters on the various Photoshop tools and manipulations come into play, it's still a lot of ghastly and tasteless trickery that takes center stage.
The higher quality, professional and advanced amateur digital cameras that are available today are so sophisticated, it's difficult to really screw up your pictures if you have a basic grasp of photography and how to use the camera's features. Despite this, a lot of people are screwing up their pictures in post production by relying on photo editing software. Sammon's examples in the Photoshop Elements portions of this book point this out very clearly. The "before Photoshop" photos are often preferable to the "after Photoshop" photos. I'm not speaking of basic operations such as minor color corrections, cropping, sharpening, etc. I'm speaking of the use of filters and borders and the cut-and-paste collages that Sammon often refers to as "artistic" which are, in fact, perfect examples of over-processed pseudo-art.
I'm not really picking on Rick Sammon here. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I've enjoyed Sammon's writing and photography in other publications as well. It's just that we really don't need more people playing around with their computers to create the photographic equivalent of black velvet paintings.Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography 2.0: Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Better Digital Images Featuring Adobe Photoshop® Elements® Overview

Adobe Fireworks CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques ReviewAdobe Fireworks is a pretty underrated app, and I just recently discovered it myself. Looking around online I found very little resources to tell me just what the heck this thing does. Even Adobe's website if missing the usual gloat about features.
I picked up this book to get a nice overview of what this program is capable of, and in that respect it delivers quite nicely. This is not a comprehensive guide, but, you should know that just by the title. The book is well written, and delivers just enough content where it counts.
I do wish that the chapter on 'Designing Interfaces' was a bit more in depth, but all in all I think the material is pretty well rounded, and definitely worth the $20 I spent.Adobe Fireworks CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques Overview

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 Plain & Simple ReviewI had never used Power Point, and in a month I have a presentation due for a new course I am taking. I looked for the simplest, most understandable book that would not take me a year to read through. I hadn't much faith, knowing how techy books, especially for software, were: complex, assuming you know more than you do.
This book is so enjoyable to use, and so simple, I could start from square one and complete my presentation in one evening. I wish I could write Nancy and thank her! If you have never worked with Power Point, or think it is too complicated, this is the book for you. Forget the classes, just get this book.Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 Plain & Simple Overview

Word 2003 For Dummies ReviewSeveral years back, probably more than ten, I read one of the "for Dummies" books. It's been so long ago, I don't even remember what the book was about, but I do remember that I was very disappointed in it. For that reason, I've always steered away from this series of books. However recently, I found myself in need of WORD 2003 FOR DUMMIES by Dan Gookin. I have to admit that I have been shocked by just how good this book is.
I'm not a techie person by any means, and that makes me perfect this book. It is written in easy to understand terms and takes otherwise complex issues down to their basic level of simplicity. So far, I have turned to this book maybe half a dozen times and in each case, have mastered the subject with little difficulty.
If you're like me, this may not be a book that you read through, but it is certainly one that you will reference as the need occurs. To that end, I am very satisfied with this book. I have certainly changed my mind about this series of books. I know different people write these books, but my first experience was so disappointing, I judged all of these books by their cover.

Web Design All-in-One For Dummies ReviewWhat I really loved about this book is the emphasis on topics most other web design books skip over such as planning, researching, getting content together to create a successful website. I'd recommend this to people just getting started learning web design or a seasoned professionals that just want to get more value out of their own website projects.Web Design All-in-One For Dummies Overview

Access 2007 For Dummies ReviewMy spouse volunteered to take on a data collection and manipulation project for a non-profit using Access. Here is her report:
I was familiar with the basics of relational database design, and had used Access to a limited extent about 8 years ago. I had a good understanding of the data and how it would be used, so designing a robust database was pretty straightforward. My limitation was the nuts and bolts mechanics of using Access, especially the new 2007 version. I collected about 5 books on Access 2007 from the library, and this is the one really dove into, and ultimately ended up buying. I would say that if you are using Access 2007 you should be sure to buy a book specific to 2007, not earlier versions.
I really like the format of the book--it is organized into logical sections that are easy to follow. I especially like the way the infomation is presented-- there are plenty of examples with adequate illustrations, but the basic ideas are well explained before the examples, so that I found it easy just to sit down and read it to absorb most of the basic ideas. Then after I had acquired a good overview of, say, forms and their applications, I went back to the examples to try them out on my own data. Many of the other books I used explained the concepts only through the examples, so unless you were actually sitting at the computer following each and every step it was difficult to gather the fundamental concepts.
I think the sections on basic database design concepts would be adequate for those not so familiar with relational databases.
I did find one major omission that is critical enough that I ended up buying another book to supplement this one. I did not find any reference to action queries such as update, append, and delete. These have been really crucial to me as I consolidate date from many different sources, and the lack of info on action queries is glaring! (I'll admit that I didn't read EVERY word of this book, so I guess it is possible that I somehow overlooked it, but I was read the first 250 out of 350 pages pretty carefully.) I ended up buying "The Unofficial Guide to Access 2007" by Jim Keogh to supplement, but I'll warn you even that one has misinformation on the format of update queries...
All in all, though, I found this book to be a great basic introduction--concisely written, in an easily digested style. Very useful.Access 2007 For Dummies Overview
