InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows ReviewSome of the visual quickstart books are better than the others. This one is one of the best in the whole bunch!
The author really knows her stuff. She covers every important aspect of the program in a fun, easy to read style. The step-by-step lessons are incredibly easy to follow. You don't need any special files to learn the program. Just open the book to any page and learn the specific task you need to know.
The book is organized not just by the program's features, but by the type of projects you'd be working on. For instance, the chapter on Long Documents has all the exercises you'd want for those type of files.
The author also has some very good background stories about working in advertising and design. So you learn not just InDesign, but about things like spot color, preparing files for printing, and working with PDFs.
There are plenty of books that cost twice the price of this one. But you can't find anything as good for this price.InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows Overview

Real World Adobe InDesign CS4 ReviewDavid Blatner and Olav Martin Kvern are two of the top InDesign educators and they know the software inside out and backwards. This book stays close at hand whenever I'm in an ID project. It has bailed me out many a time when I've been pounding my head against some issue where things aren't coming out as expected or I'm unsure of a way to accomplish what I need to get done. It's not a tutorial book with step by step projects, but it covers most everything you'll need to know in detail. Beginners might find it isn't basic enough to be the sole learning tool, but whatever level you're at, Real World InDesign CS4 is an essential reference.Real World Adobe InDesign CS4 Overview

The Design Collection Revealed: Adobe Indesign CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS4, and Adobe Illustrator CS4 (Revealed (Delmar Cengage Learning)) ReviewI ordered this book for my Intro to Design Applications class at Ai, and for the most part, it serves its purpose. It seems to me that certain lessons are missing steps in one area or another, but it's unclear whether or not this was intentional. My instructor seems to think that it might be the authors' intent to get the students to apply what they've learned by implying the use of a given tool or command. I found it slightly frustrating, and to get the results depicted in the lessons, I found myself straying from the instructions and just fiddling with the project until it looked the way it was supposed to. All in all, not a bad book, but could definitely use a revision. The Design Collection Revealed: Adobe Indesign CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS4, and Adobe Illustrator CS4 (Revealed (Delmar Cengage Learning)) Overview

InDesign CS4 For Dummies ReviewI could find few books that covered Adobe's InDesign CS4 & a DVD tutorial costs more than the program. I am not all that familiar with Adobe products, including Photoshop, but I needed a program that could handle complex graphics, etc in a book format. I found that even the best Word Processing programs froze once I got a chapter to a certain length. Due to the topic, the format of my writing style is complicated, very note heavy with maps, sidebars, photos, as well as varying levels of indentation, bullets, etc.
Unfortunately, this book is way over my head. I struggled through Chapter 1, wondering why a beginner with the program needed to know about the changes made from CS3 before anything else. Finally, when I got to Chapter 3, it began to explain how to create a document, but if you are a beginner/dummy, you don't already know what various Icons mean... nor do you understand the jargon & techniques used in the printing & publishing industry. Frankly, I despair.
What I really needed, before progressing to this book, was "Teach Yourself InDesign CS4 Visually." The Teach Yourself Visually series is the absolute best for the absolute beginner. Unfortunately, there is no such book for this program.InDesign CS4 For Dummies Overview

Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium Classroom in a Book ReviewWhen I purchased this book, I was under the impression that it was a tutorial for all of the programs in the software suite. It is, but it only touches on some of the features within each program: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Acrobat and Adobe Bridge. If you want to learn how to use Photoshop (like I did), you have to get Adobe Photoshop CS4 Classroom In A Book. If you want to learn how to use Dreamweaver, you have to get Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Classroom In A Book, etc.Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium Classroom in a Book Overview
