Digital Video for Dummies, Third Edition Review"3rd Edition" I would recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a Video Editing Guru. Now there isn't much fame or glory in such a title, and I'm not implying that after reading the book you will be able to instantly break into the "Pro" video editing business either. But it does give you some useful information on how to digitize those video clips and turn them into a respectable home movie or corporate presentation.
The book is very much based on Apple's "iMovie" and Pinnacle's "Studio 8". You'll skip around a bit because of the 2 different programs it explains, but you're really just getting 2 books in one if you ever decide to dabble in the 'other' program. If you're using a video editing program other than these, you may want to pick a different book.
Well organized and "dumb-ed down" enough for the beginner. The projects and included clips on CD Rom keep it interesting. I learned about many tips that I plan to use all the time in my projects now. Good work Underdahl!
Based on what I've seen in this book, I would definitely check out the Adobe Premiere Dummies book by the same author if I decide to move up to that program. I'm confident that I would not be disappointed.Digital Video for Dummies, Third Edition Overview

Macromedia Studio MX 2004 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies ReviewMacromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.
As I said, with such a breadth of information the book is definately a bargain. However, that advantage is also the book's primary downfall I feel. It says 7 books in one, but if that is true it is SEVEN SHORT BOOKS. Each book is definately not the standard "For Dummies" length. This lends itself to make it 7 abridged-sized books. The adbridgement comes by removing all of the discussion on the more advanced features of the program. Unfortunately the extreme basics are also belabored.
All of that means that the book will be useful to help you get started in Macromedia Studio, but after you have a little more than a few hours of experience in the software suite you will find the book increasingly useless. Because the features which a mildly seasoned user will find difficult to master are not covered, this book is not such a great value if the purchaser already has mild to moderate background experience with MX software.
So with that review in mind take it or leave according to your lot. If you are new to Macromedia Studio MX and want some help for the first month or so getting up and running, this is a great resource. But if you have already pushed through the growing pains of climbing the learning curve, you may want to pass on this one for a more advanced text.Macromedia Studio MX 2004 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies Overview

3ds Max at a Glance ReviewAs a teacher of 3D Computer Graphics I have always enjoyed this author's books (his [digital] Character Animation text are great). I agree that the tutorials are tricky, as is the hippo and car in his Maya at a Glance book. But there are very few books out there that visually give a good general overview of the major concepts and tools of 3DS Max the way that this text does. The person who wrote the negative review about the book shouldn't have bought the text in the first place - everyone has a different learning style.
So if you want to not only read about, but see all the different things Max has to offer, and know that there is not an Art of 3DS Max as there is an Art of Maya that serves as a great reference, definitely consider adding this text to your library. I would recommend it for teachers, and newbies and novices who are still learning the basics of 3D.3ds Max at a Glance Overview

The Official Photodex Guide to ProShow ReviewI have used ProShow Gold for years and love it. I have produced dozens of slide shows for travel and photo clubs and have produced DVDs for sale with the program. This book is a total mess, just not useful. So many problems, where to begin. Each should be corrected in a totally revised version.
1. The book is a giant sales pitch for the much more expensive Producer version of the program. One cannot get past chapter 5 without Producer. The book should have been divided into sections with the beginning explaining common features of ProShow Gold and Producer. The end of the book could discuss features unique to Producer.
2. The CD files that come with the book are very frustrating to get to play with Windows Vista. There is no explanation of how to get them to play.
3. Many of the features of Gold are not mentioned. This book is of little help to a beginner. Many of the check boxes, choices and methods to produce slide shows are ignored or not explained in enough detail.
4. The book totally ignores how to deal with big digital photo files and small amount of computer RAM. Many will overload their computers unless they first convert photos to lower resolution. A resolution of say 1000 to 1500 pixels across is all that is needed. I convert my photos first before construction big slide shows.
5. The book ignores techniques for using adjacent copies of slides to produce creative motion effects. Again, it is a sale pitch for the more expensive Producer version without showing how to do great shows with the less expensive Gold version.
6. The book goes into great detail of moving boxes with the Producer version, showing how to create mind numbing multiple boxes, motion, zooms within boxes and frames and moving text all on one screen. This is total mental overload for anyone looking at such a slide show. If Hollywood thought this to be artistic, they would have incorporated moving boxes, text, zooms and more into their movies. These techniques which are covered in several chapters just lead to confusing, frustrating, non-artistic messes of slide shows.
7. The book ignores various techniques to fill a horizontal screen with vertical images. The author could have given some good tips.
8. As others have indicated, the book is full of errors, typos and mistakes. The book should have been tested by novices to the program before publication. Get ten people from the street and let them learn from the book and try to create a slide show. Total confusion and frustration will be the result.
I wanted to see what features Producer has that Gold does not. The book did not do a good job of listing them. I came away definitely convinced that the cheaper Gold version is a great program and that the expensive Producer is not needed by 95% of users. I very much recommend buying ProShow Gold but not this book.

Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 ReviewHow many times have you thought you took the perfect picture only to discover that there were flaws in the photo I recently tried out Corel's Paint Shop Pro X2 software which retails for $ 99.99.One disclaimer, I have used the various earlier Paint Shop versions in the past. This software is economical to purchase and fairly easy to use. The learning curve is too not difficult to grasp.
The included Photo X2 printed manual provided is complete, but has no illustrations. Photo editing is very color intensive and in some ways your finished photo is artwork. Fortunately, I had assistance learning Paint Shop Pro X2. Two excellent books are Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Ken McMahon published by Focal Press and Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Diane Koers published by Cengage Learning. These both retail for $29.99 each. Ken McMahon's book is very complete and a great tool for a beginner to intermediate photo edit. Ken's book has numerous graphics and is an easy read and lays out different options a photo editor can implement. Diane Koers book's is 392 Pages and written as a text book for a classroom, it is for more intensive learning and it comes with a sample CD. Both books bring added information to the Pro X2 software and a different point of view on how to use it.
There are multiple things you can do to enhance your photo with Photo X2.
The number one reason is a one step photo fixer which is like taking your photo to a lab. I was somewhat skeptical of this until I used the photo fixer. I tried this option on a group photo, where the lighting was all wrong. There were dark areas and areas with too much ambient light. I clicked on one step photo fixer and corrected the lighting of the photo and the result was spectacular. The other problem I had was the group of people were in a semi-circle in the photo not in a straight line. I used a tool called a perspective tool and adjusted the group to a straight line. I now had the perfect photo with a lot of help from Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.The hardest concept to understand with Photo X2 photo software is the use of layers. The first layer is the background and then additional layers are placed on top of the first. The photo editor has the option to change layers around and make them more transparent or opaque. A good visualization of this is a group of transparent plastic sheets with designs on them. They layers are all stacked on top of one another for a finished photo. A use of this if you want to add text to a photo, another person to the photo or item. The photo editor will allow you move the layers around much like shuffling a deck of cards.
For a Cub Scout function, I needed to print out some special photos. I didn't have a matt for the photos but X2 has a photo frame option which became my matt. The next step I used was adding the names of the Scouts in color. The finished photo was a big hit with the parents and the Scouts. Parents complimented me and asked me how I was able to make the photo.
My last project was one of field expediency. I needed wrapping paper for my wife's Valentine Day gift. I opened X2 and selected a red background for the paper. I typed in Happy Valentines in different font sizes and type faces. I used the picture tube options for added effect. . There are different designs of tubes. I used the flower tube and laid down different flowers on the paper and printed it out. By the way, my wife liked the paper and thought I bought it at the store.
There are more things that X2 can do like coloring black and white photos, removing red eye, scratches in photographs, 3D effects, and painting your own photograph than I have space to write about.
If you are the market for fairly reasonable and easy to use photo software Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is well worth the investment. To get the most out the software I would recommend Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Ken McMahon and Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Diane Koers.MAJ (ret) Eric Shuler NJARNGPicture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 Overview

How to Build Your Own Web Site With Little or No Money: The Complete Guide for Business and Personal Use (How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful...) ReviewWhat initially struck me about this book is how comprehensive it is. It certainly lives up to the title, providing a wealth of information on how to build a website without spending a lot of money and then how to get traffic to it. Bruce Brown promises that, even if you have never built a website before, the book has more than enough information to help you do this. A novice like me is, therefore, expecting to see step-by-step instructions on how to design, build and publish a website from scratch.
There is indeed a comprehensive HTML tutorial with additional, if brief, information on XTML and a few other coding languages. If you have the time, you should be able to learn html by following the guidance provided. But for those who don't want to take the time to learn HTML, there's a chapter that describes the advantages and drawbacks of software products on the market that will do the HTML coding for you, such as Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Create Suite 3. I would probably opt for these products and not spend time learning html. But they're pretty costly, so your decision is going to be based on your time and budget. Luckily, there's a chapter on free website design tools such as Joomla, Wordpress, and NVu that can be used to build websites.
It made more sense to me to have the chapters on web design fundamentals and web content appear before the coding chapters since you need to have a structure or blueprint in place before you start building the site, but both chapters do a good job of explaining in detail how to structure your site for easy navigation and create content that is search-engine optimized as well as user-friendly. There are also fairly comprehensive chapters on website graphics, web page formats, and electronic shopping carts, giving you just about everything you need to create a fully functional business website.
The rest of the book is devoted to SEO, how to generate traffic, PPC and Google Adsense advertising, affiliate marketing, blogging and social networking. Interviews with several web design experts answering the same questions provide additional tips and strategies. And the book includes real-life examples of how several individuals built their own websites and established successful web-based businesses with them.
I have to admit, I was a little intimidated and overwhelmed by what's required to actually build a website from scratch. There were a lot of terms that I didn't understand and had to look up, but I believe, with this book, some time and patience, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to pull it off.

Photoshop CS / CS2 Wow Book, The, 1/e ReviewFriends, allow me to eat a little crow. Some of you may recognize me as one of the smart-alecks in the Amazon discussions forums below. Many of us were extremely annoyed that this book (which had been pre-purchased over a year ago), failed to materialize, even after several postponed publication dates by the publisher. Some of us grew so disgusted with the delays, we canceled our pre-orders. I was one of those people. But today, guess what the Book Fairy brought me? To make a long story short, I'd forgotten that months ago, in my zeal, I had pre-ordered this book from two different places to see which would ship it first, and I only remembered to cancel one of those orders. I'm actually very glad I did because in my opinion, this book was worth the wait. Should you buy it? Read on...
First of all, I'm coming at this from the perspective of a repeat customer. I've been a Photoshop user since version 4, and as such, I'm more than familiar with Adobe's aggravating tactic of providing sub-standard user manuals for their products. This, combined with the fact that Photoshop is one of the most complex, unwieldy, and irritatingly wonderful programs on the market makes it necessary for Adobe customers to buy expensive after-market books to learn how to use the software they just paid an arm and a leg for. (Sorry about that preposition; I've got a lot to say and little time.) Over the years, Peachpit books in general have always been among my favorites and the Wow! Series in particular. The folks at Peachpit seem to put a lot of care into their products: the paper is always bright, slick, and of good quality -- which you will really come to appreciate if your eyes are already tired from a long day or you have poor vision and don't need the added hassle of trying to wade through a 500 page tome written in blurry 6 pt Times New Roman like some other books. Peachpit's text is always wonderfully legible and the images are always clean and colorful and well-balanced. The Wow books have the fantastic ability of combining a ton of very dry, but useful information into a colorful, well-organized interface. The Photoshop CS/CS2 Wow book is no exception.
The chapters of this book are organized in such a way that you can start right at the beginning and methodically work your way through, or you can flip through the pages until you find a photo that inspires you and dive right in. Skill level does not matter here: beginners can follow the well-written step by step tutorials and more experienced users can get the gist of the subject just by glancing at the screenshots.
The book starts right off with a bang: What's new in CS/CS2 gives a nice rundown of the changes that were made in the various versions of Photoshop alongside colorful images which show you the features and tool palettes being discussed. The authors have also used a clever technique of separating the features of PSCS from PSCS2 by using a different colored font (typeface for you nit-pickers) throughout the book. You may think this would be distracting, but it actually works quite well - the flow of the text is still maintained and I imagine that it would be quite handy for people who are still on the fence about upgrading to CS2. Browsing through the book for specific examples of CS2 features is really easy because of the different colored text and may help one decide if the upgrade is worth it. Other useful features are the Troubleshooting Tips, which are scattered throughout the book, like the one of page 33 about the History Tool; these tips describe annoying dialogue errors that you may run across while using a particular tool in PS and ways to fix them.
Other excellent features are the "Exercising" and "Anatomy of ..." sections which are more in-depth tutorials that take you deep into the bowels of some of Photoshop's more intimidating tools like Smart Objects and Masks. My personal favorites are the sections titled "Secrets of the Universe Revealed" in which inspirational images from guest artists are dissected layer by layer so that you can see the techniques used and try them on your own images. Chapter 5 is particularly exceptional - if you have only a limited time to learn Photoshop, I'd advise you to work through this chapter first: it is chock full of yummy tutorial goodness. Among my favorites in this chapter are:
p. 320 - Ron Deutschmann demonstrates an invaluable technique for eliminating lens flare that's so simple, you'll kick yourself for not having thought of it yourself. When I think of all the hours I've wasted doing it the hard way...
p. 321 - "Bringing Out Detail" tackles digital noise, chromatic aberration, and the Shadow/Highlight command in one fell swoop.
p. 338 - Shows you one of the better ways to hand tint a photo. (Alternately, you could buy a program like Recolored which does most of the work for you, but hand-tinting using the method described in this book gives superior results, in my opinion).
p. 344 - A wonderful tutorial by co-author Cristen Gillespie on how to change a daytime image into night, complete with dramatically glowing light from windows.
p. 348 - Katrin Eismann contributes two beautifully evocative images and shares her techniques on how they were crafted.
p. 349 - Alexis Deutschmann, a young girl, aptly demonstrates her skills as a photographer and Photoshop user by transforming a pretty, but boring image into a dramatic, gorgeous, and frame-worthy picture. If the sight of a young photographer like Alexis producing quality work like this using just her camera, imagination, and Photoshop doesn't inspire you, then I don't know what will.
p. 352 Loren Haury shows how to combine three separate images utilizing the HDR technique.
p. 354 Christine Zalewski contributes a lovely "botanical portrait" that brings to mind the gorgeous, moody orchid photos in the film 'Adaptation'.
p. 359 Begins a section on painting in Photoshop; nothing much new if you own previous PS Wow books, but very enlightening if you don't, or thought you could only achieve these types of apinterly effects and brush strokes in Corel Painter. I've seen many of these images before in previous versions of the Wow series (which is a shame, since, in my opinion, painting and animation are two of Photoshop's hidden treasures), but the images that are new are top-notch.
With few exceptions, Chapter 7 which covers type and vector graphics, is disappointing. Many of the "F/X" look particularly outdated and old to me. Maybe back in 1998 those neon, metallic, and jellybean-colored text effects looked cool for about five minutes, but nowadays there are so many fresh styles being used, it's hard to keep up with them. If you were hoping for fresh text and logo ideas, look elsewhere. Instead, I recommend you keep a scrap book (or dvd collection) of your favorite, most awe-inspiring stuff. You can grab short clips from movie titling (you know the credits that run at the beginning of the film) or from tv, magazine ads, cd covers, snapshots of cool building signs, etc. Still, if you are new to Photoshop or never really explorer the text and vector features, then this chapter will give you plenty to chew on.
Similarly, Chapters 8, 9, and 10 don't have much to offer advanced users or previous owners of a Photoshop Wow book. If you're big into web design, prepare for disappointment. Website building and animation are given short shrift in this book, which is a shame since, like Photoshop's painting tools, these areas are the unmined gems of Photoshop and not given anywhere near the attention they deserve in most books. Especially now that Adobe own's Flash and Dreamweaver! You'd think at least one chapter would pay homage to the amazing, cutting edge websites that are being produced with these programs and Photoshop. Unfortunately, most of the example webpages look flat, old, and uninteresting - nothing like the dazzling array of sites you'll run across in your average day of surfing - and, strangely enough, there's not a single mention of the word "blog", nor any tutorials on how to compose items for one. This really is a giant oversight on the part of the authors, one that I hope will be amended in future editions. There's a lot going on with the web right now and people are very interested in how to make their own photoblogs, or banners, sigs/avatars for forums or chat clients, podcasts and downloadable content for musicians, etc. What a wasted opportunity. In all fairness, this might be beyond the scope of this book; it is after all, nearly 800 pages of densely packed information. Nonetheless, a few mini-tutorials addressing these subjects would have made for a more complete book.
Pros:
Exceedingly well written: manages to explain complex subjects without resorting to tired attempts at humor nor condescending to the reader.
Well-organized with clear text and sharp images.
Chock-full of both bite-sized and full-sized tutorials.

Outstanding photographic contributions from a wide variety of sources that will both inspire you and teach you how to achieve these fascinating results on your own images.
Huge! Covers nearly every conceivable situation the beginner and intermediate Photoshop user will likely need to tackle at some point.
Companion dvd is loaded with excellent practice images from the lessons, brushes, styles, tools, patterns, gradients and actions.

Cons:
Chapters covering Type and the Web leave a lot to be desired.
Many advanced subjects like scripting, animation, masking, photo retouching and lighting are given short shrift.
Readers hoping for more in-depth information should look elsewhere.

Foundation Fireworks CS4 (Foundations) ReviewThis is not a beginner's guide to Fireworks, nor is it an advanced reference. Instead, it is a selection of various topics about Fireworks. Early sections that present an overview of the various Fireworks bitmap and vector tools are rather straightforward, but with creative examples. Later sections, such as creating Flex skins and AIR applications are for more advanced users. The fact that the book has several authors is rather evident as you read the somewhat disjoint topics in each chapter.
However, even with this variability between the different chapters, there are plenty of "gems" hidden in this book. I've used Fireworks for many months, and I still didn't completely understand how some of the different tools worked until I saw some of the excellent examples in this book. One problem with Fireworks is that some very important features are often hidden within extensions in the Commands menu, or hidden in some far-off panel that needs to be enabled. This book helped me discover some of those hidden gems within Fireworks.
This is not intended to be a Fireworks reference book. But as a stroll through various features of Fireworks (especially those features that make it unique compared to Photoshop or Illustrator), it was a pleasant journey. Reading this book while Fireworks is open so you can try some of the interesting examples will help you better appreciate the features that the authors are trying to highlight. If you just read the book without trying the examples, you will be missing much of the fun.
One downside with this book is that the various images were obviously intended to be published in color, but they are only in black-and-white in this book. If you look at the sample images at the top of the back cover, you can see how some of the images were intended to be shown. By printing these images in black-and-white, many of the examples loose a lot of their value. Another reason to be trying the examples within Fireworks yourself to see how they really look. If the images had been printed in color, I probably would have rated this a 4 instead of a 3.Foundation Fireworks CS4 (Foundations) Overview

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Bible ReviewI will take half the blame for buying this as an indie film guy. I specifically searched for "Soundbooth CS3" and this is the guide that was the top pick. I saw the 5 star and ordered, not realizing that any book that would call itself the "CS3 Bible" would not cover at least on some level all programs in CS3. What is there is fine, but those interested in workflow across the entire CS3 spectrum STAY AWAY. This book covers ONLY DESIGN PREMIUM, and DOES NOT HAVE ANY COVERAGE OF Soundbooth, Premiere Pro, Encore, or After Effects. If you are a web designer that's fine (unless you want to use Soundbooth to work with sound, premier to edit, or after effects to produce, or encore to create pro dvd,) but as a book calling itself "The _____ Bible", I was extremely disappointed to find no mention of the rest (and arguably most important) parts of CS3, and therefore a complete waste of money... should have called itself "The CS3 Print/Web Bible", but without Premiere and After Effects, that's even a tough sell in the age of youtube. Maybe the "CS3 Document Creation Bible" would be about right... but I guess it wouldn't sell as many copies.
There is a lot of discussion about Bridge, which really is a useful program for any CS3 app, but you can find out the same info in singular CS3 program guide. (A Good Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere Pro CS3 will have a good Bridge tutorial anyway).
If you are trying to do a 'zine or something, I'm sure this is more than adequate, but be aware that there are hundreds and hundreds of pages on things like "creating a text path" etc etc, that other guides will explain step by step in 2 pages.
This book is much more about Illustrator than anything else, which to me, is about the most useless program in the CS3 canon. I have leafed through the book twice now looking for some photoshop things I could learn. I only have a year of experience with Photoshop, though I have read and used a few photoshop books, I consider myself a "practicing novice", and this had nothing that any of my other photoshop books already had, and frankly some of the things being taught in here in Illustrator can be done just as easily in Photoshop.
If the book had called itself "The CS3 document Bible" I would have never bought it or commented, and if it were titled as such, I'm sure it would deserve 5 stars, but as currently titled, it deserves a 2. I'm giving it a three because I did order it without vetting it as much as I should have. I wasted my money, don't waste yours.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Photographers ReviewDISCLAIMER: In exchange for this review I received a copy of this book for free.
Make no mistake, Philip Andrews' Adobe Photoship Elements 8 For Photographers is a book for photographers. The book has a short digital photography basics section at the beginning, but it is by-and-large written for people who already have a good grasp on photography. There's no explanation of shutter-speed, f-stop, and ISO. This isn't one of the "_____ For Dummies" books, it's a book for people who already know a thing or two. This is purely about Adobe Elements 8.
And it should be. Focal Press and Andrews are trying to write a comprehensive guide to Photoshop Elements. It's well-written, easy to follow, and starts with the programs most basic functions and ends with some truly advanced, in-depth image manipulation.
I suppose at this point it would be useful for me to write a bit about where I'm coming from in relation to photography and Photoshop. I use photography and Photoshop as a tool in my design work. I do a lot of retouching, stylising, photo-correction and image-merging. For awhile I've been interested in learning more about Elements and how much it can do. So, with that in mind, I picked up Andrews's book in exchange for this review and got to learning.
The book is split into three major sections: An introduction to Elements, the tools available in the program, and an "Elements in Action" at the end.
The introduction section covers all of the basics of the program like importing, cropping, a helpful section on scanning, and some basic manipulation (like auto-contrast and red-eye removal). It goes through Elements on a very basic level. It's explained well and has instructions for Mac and Windows.
The tools section is where things start to get good. It begins with a pretty substantial chapter on organisation, which is great. It's crucial to learn the best workflow method and organizational system of a program to use it effectively. The great thing about digital photography is that it's easy to take hundreds of pictures, but having those pictures available and easy to sift through is just as important. Everything from your photos to your tools should be at your fingertips. The book does a good job of explaining how to get your pictures and your albums in top shape using Elements' Smart-Album feature and Adobe Bridge. For anyone planning on amassing a buttload of pictures, this might be the most important section of the book.
The book then moves on to the meat of Photoshop Elements. This is why you spent your money on Elements in the first place. You want to learn how to fix photos that look too dark, aren't framed quite right, or have the wrong color temperature. Maybe you want to make your photos look old-fashioned. Maybe you want to make all of the reds in your photo really pop. Or maybe you want to go crazy with it and make rave posters or photoshop celebrity heads onto naked people's bodies. The possibilities are endless, and this book covers a lot of them.
The book covers way too much ground to mention everything covered here, but it gets into layers, masks, filters, photo-merging, and pretty much anything else you can think of. There are a couple things that I thought were really helpful. They aren't flashy or anything, but they're good to know.
The first is a section on non-detrimental size changes. Sometimes, it seems like nothing is ever the right size. Some element is always too big or too small, so it's important to know how to re-size images without losing information. Unfortunately, the section is buried at the end of "Advanced Techniques," when I think it should go closer to the front-end of the book.
Another useful bit of information is Andrews's "10 Commandments for Good Filter Usage." It's a nice bit of editorialising in a book that's pretty hands-off when it comes to what you should and shouldn't do aesthetically. Some early photoshoppers get crazy with the filters, and their photos suffer as a result, so it's nice to see Andrews try to reign in that urge a bit. Also, the printing section is pretty good. Bad prints can not only ruin good pictures, but also become a substantial waste of money. Andrews' run-through is good for printing at home, but he doesn't go into large-format printing at all, which should have been included in a book with this much depth.
There are a couple minor problems that I have with the book. There are source images that Andrews uses throughout the book, but they are only available to download online. I would have liked an included CD or DVD. At $50, it isn't a cheap book and it would be nice to have all the source material in one package.
Another issue I have with the book is that it could use a glossary. There are hundreds of terms that are Photoshop specific, a glossary would save some backtracking. Another small problem I have with the book is that the keyboard shortcuts should also have been written in shorthand instead of written out in the text. He writes out "Hold the Control button then hit the S button" to save instead of something like "CTRL+S." I would prefer the shorthand in perentheses after writing it out, because it's easier to scan the page and see what the shortcuts are instead of having to re-read the paragraphs for the shortcuts. After all, learning keyboard shortcuts makes for more efficient photoshopping.
Photoshop Elements 8 For Photographers is a great book for learning the program. Honestly, the book really opened my eyes to what Photoshop Elements 8 is capable of and both the program and the book far exceeded my expectations. Good job.Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Photographers Overview

The Adobe Photoshop Layers Book: Harnessing Photoshop's Most Powerful Tool, covers Photoshop CS3 ReviewI added this volume to my rapidly growing photoshop library in order to learn more about layers, which is indeed a very powerful and most useful weapon in the photoshop arsenal.
And there is a lot of very useful information in here, which I reckon is both the blessing and the curse of this book. After reading this book, you will definitely understand layers. However, there is a lot of text and, as a reviewer before me pointed out, not that many pictures, which to my mind, is not a very good combination. The text can be a bit hard to follow without any prior understanding of photoshop I should imagine. I was certainly glad, that I had already purchased and read other books before this one.
I'm not a big fan of the Scott Kelby approach to photography or photo editing. I think he oversimplifies the learning process in a way that makes you learn some of the hows but none of the whys. This book takes the exact opposite of Kelby's approach and loads everything you could possibly want to know about photoshop layers in your lap. This does make the book a bit heavy. You need to concentrate while using this book and you probably need to go over some of the things a couple of times.
So in conclusion I'll say, that this book is very good and very thorough, but does need an effort to go through. I wouldn't recommend it to a complete novice either, but once you get into photoshop I think it is defintely worth acquiring. The Adobe Photoshop Layers Book: Harnessing Photoshop's Most Powerful Tool, covers Photoshop CS3 OverviewCreate, correct, and control with layers, the most powerful tool in Photoshop and Photoshop ElementsImagine yourself in total control of every adjustment to your photos. Real World Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications ReviewWhen I picked up Claudia McCue's book on print production, it was with the intent of becoming a bit more knowledgeable about pre-flight requirements on my print designs. I had no idea that her book would be so in-depth and that I would be entertained along the way. McCue's writing style is completely readable. Believe me, I was prepared to prop my eyelids open in order to get through a book on print production requirements. So I was pleasantly surprised to find Claudia McCue's Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications such an enjoyable read.
The book begins with a history of printing, to help us understand current terminology and techniques (and to appreciate advances in modern printing technology!) then leads us into a tour of a contemporary print shop. McCue makes certain that we are well prepared for our journey into the printing world by starting us off with all the necessary printing jargon. She next explains what is needed in color versus black and white printing, complications that might arise with various print papers and how to deal with them, and design preparation for binding. She discusses the use of fonts, using pcs or macs and their communication limitations. A much appreciated chapter (for both printers and designers alike) is on planning for printing, or submitting the job to a printer. In this chapter she points out the necessity of planning ahead to increase productivity and limit avoidable aggravations.
A major key point to this book are the chapters specific to the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Applications-Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. McCue refers to these chapters as "Production Tips" which really, truly are worth their weight in gold. In fact, this book could easily have been alternately named "How to be Smarter, Make Your Boss Smile More & Save Yourself Many Hours of Brain-Wrenching Headaches".
I can't remember the last time I crawled into bed with a warm cup of tea and a print production book to do a little late-night reading, and well, that's because it might have been never, until I opened this one. Just a few of her topic headings that have had me grinning include "Forensic Tools", found toward the end of the book, which discusses how to scope out mistakes in InDesign pre-print, "Watch Your Language", on naming files appropriately, and "Let it Bleed", explaining InDesign's bleed options.
Claudia McCue has more than twenty years of experience in pre-press, and it really does feel like she has packed all of it into "Real World's Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications". Twenty years flies by fast when you're having fun. Thanks to Claudia I won't be spending that much more time learning these lessons the hard way.Real World Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications Overview
