After Effects 5 Bible ReviewThis is by far the most comprehensive of the books on After Effects. I've bought other books on After Effects from Amazon and returned one of them because it was quite bad! The Bible is first and foremost huge and comprehensive. It covers topics like Motion Math in detail I have not seen anywhere else. Same with Expressions and Keys! The tutorials are numerous and every function is explained via a tutotial or another. Great Book! And I am still plumbing the depths of it.After Effects 5 Bible OverviewAfter Effects has been established as the world's most powerful and cost-effective solution for motion graphics professionals. The application has revolutionized the broadcast industry. Proof of the revolution was clear when the mid-1990s revealed a dazzling array of visual artistry in ad campaigns and television network promotions, the quality and the quantity of which had never been seen.Version 5.0 was a major upgrade (3D, expressions, parenting, to name a few) and Version 5.5 could hardly be considered a dot release. Truly phenomenal software, this build of After Effects boasts a variety of new features as well as vast enhancements to its user interface. There are numerous new filters for concretizing any visual effects that the mind can envision. Additionally, After Effects 5.5 includes improved 3D-compositing capabilities, greater command over expressions with the Expression Controls effects, as well as native support for OSX, among numerous other improvements. The After Effects Bible looks into every aspect of the application. Whether you're completely new to motion graphics, or an experienced hand looking for ways to get the most out of the recent upgrade, there is valuable, time-saving information to be found in each chapter. There are step exercises for everything from creating complex keyframe animations to animating cameras in 3D space. Whether it's read from front-to-back or used as a desktop reference, the After Effects Bible belongs in the motion graphic designer's library.

Take Your iPad to Work ReviewI selected this book because I've been an iPad user since the first month it came out. I've consistently tried using my iPad at work in a number of ways and am still tweaking my ways I use it at work to be most effective. So when I had the opportunity to read this book I thought it would be great! A book on using your ipad at work, how neat...
Well this book is a great book... for beginner ipad owners that have no idea what to do with the iPad. The book is approx 350 pages long and the author spends the first 96 pages telling you first what an ipad is (2 pages) to what the buttons are on the ipad and how it works.... This has nothing to do with using the iPad at work, this has to do with remedial iPad use. This is beginner stuff. I would imagine you wouldn't attempt to use an iPad at work without some basic understanding of it.
This book spent 1/3 of it's length with remedial information, for any current iPad user you can fly by pages 1-100 and start out on chapter 7 which is where the business apps really start coming into play where the author writes about iWork. But then a few chapters later they talk about setting up a twitter page and facebook pages... ??? More content not relevant in my opinion to using your iPad at work.
I don't get it. This is a fantastic book for the beginner to iPads, NOT someone who has been using one and is looking for tips on "taking your iPad to work." If this book was "you just got an iPad FROM work and you have no idea how to use it" then sure cover the basics, but this is TAKING YOUR IPAD TO WORK. In other words you own it, you play with it, you know the basics. Show me the good stuff, give me tips, techniques to use it in meetings, ways to be more productive.
If you want a book for beginners get this, if you want a book for anyone that has had an iPad for more then a week you should probably skip on this.
Oh and a lot of the apps they discuss in this book are the higher dollar apps. iWork is $10 a piece for 3 apps totaling $30, I personally use google docs which is free or a DocsToGo which is $14 total for similar functionality where you save over 50% over iWork. They don't mention GoodReader which I found over the last year to be the best reader for PDF's, docs, etc and is only a dollar. They talk about LogMeIn which I do have but is $30 and there are other free options that are suitable. Almost every app they mention is one of the more expensive apps in the Apple app store, there ARE a few cheap/free mentions but this book really doesn't do justice to the selection of apps out there that are much cheaper and in most cases more effective.
For a beginner like I said who needs help this will be good, but for anyone else I would pass on this.

Designing Web-Based Training: How to Teach Anyone Anything Anywhere Anytime Reviewnote: I submitted my review yesterday and incorrectly put the publishers name instead or Horton in the review. I have corrected that error below
Excellent overview and covers the in depth considerations necessary for any successful WBT program
I do consulting in education on WBT and I am a Director of a WBT Consulting Certification Program and consequently usually do not have the time to write reviews. However, in this instance I had to take the time. Horton has done an excellent job of providing an overview of WBT and an in depth study of the instructional design related to a WBT program. He covers most of the issues you will be facing setting up WBT and his book should be on your shelf and one of the first that you read if you are just getting started in WBT or in need of further guidance in this area. He doesn't go into the practical development side of the how to do the graphics, programming, and Web architecture, but that is OK because that is a separate area in itself. If you need to know most of the considerations involved with WBT, then this is definitely your book. After you have read his book sit down and use his suggestions to plan your WBT program and you will not go wrong. He also addresses very practical issues in the instructional design of the WBT program and the courses within the program, how to set them up and conduct them. I can't say enough about how well he covers these topics. If you need a book that will give you ideas and make you think about your WBT program and the instructional design and development within your upcoming or current WBT program, his book will do all of that and more. His book will definitely make you think and will provide insightful assistance for WBT program managers, WBT instructional designers, WBT course development teams and WBT instructors alike. I particularly liked the instructional design of his book; it is full of illustrations that are as thought provoking as his words. The book is truly an idea generator. It is an easy read for a newcomer and a must read for the WBT professional.Designing Web-Based Training: How to Teach Anyone Anything Anywhere Anytime Overview

Employee Engagement: A Roadmap for Creating Profits, Optimizing Performance, and Increasing Loyalty ReviewEmployee Engagement: A Roadmap for Creating Profits, Optimizing Performance and Increasing Loyalty should be read by every CEO, Vice President, Human Resource and Organization Development/Training Executive! It is the place to start if you want to learn about this critical business topic, increase your knowledge if you're already familiar, and tie your practices to business results if you view it only as an HR or Training issue. This work defines what employee engagement really is and shows why it is not employee satisfaction - it is much more powerful. Those who utilize what Brad Federman discusses in this book will see the power of understanding and using employee engagement as a strategy for increasing revenue and profits, lowering employee turnover and enhancing the trust and loyalty of employees, leaders and executives which can lead to increased resourcefulness and business results.
The book is written in two broad sections:
Section One provides a solid overview of what employee engagement is, why having high levels of engagement are critical to your business and why, in many companies, measured engagement levels are low (companies with high levels of employee engagement consistently outperform their competition in terms of revenue). It moves on to discuss the best ways to accurately measure employee engagement, shows that many engagement surveys are flawed in design and focus too much on the manager and provides the nine key Engagement Drivers for any organization. It then provides a survey design foundation, how to best work with feedback and ends with a critical chapter on the key to using employee engagement survey data effectively - building trust and focusing on opportunities instead of avoiding risks.
Section Two contains seven chapters that provide valuable insight and practical steps to take the practice of employee engagement and the data from engagement surveys and turn it into business results. These chapters cover reducing turnover, the best ways to select and onboard new employees, how leaders and executives can foster and enhance employee engagement, how to ensure new managers effectively transition into their new role and how individual employees can increase their level of engagement and produce better business results.
Chapters 11 and 12 should be required reading for all employees from the C-Suite, through HR and Training to the Sales and Customer Service Rep. Chapter 11 dives into the critical fact, lost on all of us from time to time, that everything we do should be focused on the customer and building our relationship with them everyday. To be customer focused organizations need to support three main areas - Sales, Service and their Culture. If your culture is not customer centric your customers will know it, no matter how well trained your Sales and Service reps are.
Chapter 12 is short and to the point - build a culture that encourages employees to be engaged and you will see benefits from that effort. Don't and your competition will pass you by. This chapter gives a model of four ways employee engagement is practiced in organizations today - it is ignored, an event, a process or a strategy. It is a good summary of why an organization should make employee engagement a strategy.
Each chapter ends with "Questions to ask yourself" that provide a chapter review and help you think through how to put tools and processes into place.
Employee Engagement: A Roadmap for Creating Profits, Optimizing Performance and Increasing Loyalty is a practical and well written guide for navigating through a complex but crucial part of any organization - how can all employees increase their performance to realize better business results?

Learn AppleScript: The Comprehensive Guide to Scripting and Automation on Mac OS X (Learn (Apress)) ReviewOn only about the 5th chapter, and I just thought I'd report that so far this book has only had one complete exercise in I think chapter 3.
Most of the book seems descriptive. He explains all aspects of AppleScript, but you read for pages and pages and he never really seems to connect what he's describing to creating actual practical scripts. He could have put exercises at the end of chapters so that readers could merge theory with practice. It's clear the author knows his subject, but I think the First Head writers would do a better job at making a book like this one of practical use. I really find it annoying when authors explain complex definitions and then sum by saying, "now that you understand so and so." It's like why do you think that just because you have explained something, your readers are supposed to understand it? That's not how learning works. Learning comes through practice, and trail and error. When for example he defines and talks about class and properties, he should have readers do an exercise that helps them understand what he just spent five pages talking about.
Anyway, I'm going to keep reading; if it gets any better, I'll come back and update my review.
If you don't have an prior experience with AppleScript and you're ready to jump into actually doing so, this book is not the best one to begin with. If you do have experience, this might make good reference book.Learn AppleScript: The Comprehensive Guide to Scripting and Automation on Mac OS X (Learn (Apress)) OverviewThis third edition is updated to welcome a whole new generation of Mac users to AppleScript and how they can take control of their Mac.
