The Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration and Retouching Book ReviewI've taken online classes, read plenty of books, spent many hours tring to interpret instuctions on portrait retouching. I read Matt's book and was like "oh that's how you do it". The light came on and stayed lit through all his tutorials. Best thing... you don't have to read the whole book to learn Elements. Want to retouch eyes - just go to that portion of the book. No need to have read previous chapters/pages. People who have never used Elements can understand his instructions easily. Matt writes with wit and gets right to the point. I love this book and keep it right next to my key board for reference. The Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration and Retouching Book OverviewBring out all your old storage boxes of photos, and open up all the images you've shot that were just "okay." In his latest book, Matt Kloskowski shows you how to restore old photos and retouch newer ones to make your images go from so-so to great. Matt trains thousands of people each year, showing them exactly how to make their photos (and the people in those photos) look their very best. He won't bog readers down with unnecessary details, but instead will show them, with clear step-by-step instructions, the best techniques in Photoshop Elements to make the best images. Everyone wants their photos to look great, and to be appreciated and noticed by their family and friends. With Matt's newest book, readers will learn the most useful techniques for restoring old photos--from removing dust and mold to repairing scratches and tears--and retouching images of people--including specific sections about working on difficult areas, such as the eyes and mouth.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6: A Visual Introduction to Digital Photography (book with CD) ReviewAfter buying Elements 6 and finding it hard to understand (and the Help menu of little help)for a novice like me I purchased the book by Mark Galer titled Elements 6 Maximum Performance. I found the book too difficult to follow and understand although the included DVD was helpful. I then purchased "Visual Introduction ... and found it to be just what I needed to help me put new life into my digital photographs. The included CD whas somewhat disappointing but nonetheless helpful and that is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.
The book takes you from downloading your photo's, organizing them in the Organizer, fixing and editing your photos including underexposure and overexposure. Color correction and changing, cropping, all either automatically or fully manual. Using layers and the tool box. Creating albums and scrapbooks, and fun things like photomerge and stiching, slideshows with music, etc., etc.
Excellent step-by-step instruction that is easy to read and understand will take the mystery out of the Elements 6 program. So if you are new to the Elements software like me, a novice like me, and want to know all the in's and out's of Elements 6 like me, then buy this book - like me.Adobe Photoshop Elements 6: A Visual Introduction to Digital Photography (book with CD) Overview

The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 ReviewIf you're upgrading from one of the ... beginners' image processing programs, and if you're serious about photography you should, "Photoshop 7.0" always comes out on top: the most power, the most sophistication, the best. But few of us can justify a purchase that great for a hobby. So "Photoshop Elements" looks tempting until you try it. Too many of the major tools of the full PS have been stripped out; you can't work with curves, make separations, look at individual color channels, etc., and that hurts.
Well, it turns out you can do all that! Richard Lynch's outstanding "Hidden Power" provides a CD with plug-in tools for "Photoshop Elements" that virtually turns the simpler program into the full package -- at about a quarter of the price.
If that were all Lynch's book did, I would give it 5 stars. But it isn't the whole story or even most of the story. The fact is that "Hidden Power" is just about the best explanation of what those tools do, how color imaging works, and how to use powerful tools to good advantage that I've ever seen. And I've read a lot in 10+ years of manipulating digital images.
Finally, "Hidden Power" includes the most useful tool I've owned for getting past the hardest part: making your printed output look right without spending hundreds of dollars on expensive 'profiling' gear and software. It's a simple file, with the colors recorded in CMYK format, and it's the perfect calibration tool. In one evening it solved completely the difficult problem of getting predictable, neutral-color black and white prints.
Kudos to Lynch. If you go for Photoshop Elements, you have to have "Hidden Power" to go along with it. Accept no substitutes. Give the book a sixth star. The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 Overview

Photoshop Elements 2 Bible ReviewPhotoshop Elements pricetag made me believe it would be a very simple program and I'd have no problem teaching myself to use it. While it is a very "user-friendly" program, I was confused by several of the tools and really felt like I was just scratching the surface with what I was able to figure out by myself. So I got a book. After looking at a bunch of other books, picked Laurie Ulrich's Elements Bible, and now I really get it and feel like I know what I'm doing. I'm using all the tools, playing with filters, designing really sharp stuff for our company website and I'm even teaching people in my department how to use Elements. It would have taken me months of frustration to figure this all out on my own, but with this book, I've really gotten up to speed fast. The book reads like the author is talking TO you, not AT you, and the examples are great, and the art in the glossy section gave me a lot of good ideas. Get this book if you really want to get all there is out of Elements and have fun learning about it.Photoshop Elements 2 Bible Overview

Combining Images with Photoshop Elements: Selecting, Layering, Masking, and Compositing ReviewAs an avid user of PE and having seen a variety of lessons and partial tutorials on the use of layers in PE, I was grateful to find Ted's book where everything is in one place. It is well organized and detailed, allowing me to follow along with ease. I expect it would be a boon for a newer user also, especially the included CD-ROM with several important lessons given as video tutorials. The price of the book is worth it for this alone. Overall a great buy. My only beef is that the images used in the examples were not (as is often typical)on the CD.I personally enjoy duplicating the lessons with the actual pictures used. This is a minor point, however, and overall I would highly recommend this book.Combining Images with Photoshop Elements: Selecting, Layering, Masking, and Compositing Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 6 ReviewI must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Photoshop 6 can be intimidating for anything but the more basic applications. This book helped me expand the possibilities of my creativity. Every other Photoshop book I've read put me to sleep when they discussed color, the "Color Your World" chapter, actually made sense and taught me how to use the color options effectively. The humor in the book (chapter titles and random statements smattered throughout) were an added treat (except for the one about carnival workers...grrr). All in all, an exceptional tool for anyone who thinks they already know how to use Photoshop 6 and a must for anyone just starting out.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 6 OverviewDo all the new bells and whistles of Adobe Photoshop 6 and ImageReady 3 have you buzzing with anticipation, but also leave you with a healthy dose of intimidation? Do you wish you could find a book that not only tells you what Photoshop's features are, but real-world uses for them? Do you wish you could find a book that takes into consideration the fact that not everyone is van Gogh? Do you just want to quickly and easily get up to speed on the latest features? The CIG to Photoshop is just what you need!

Photoshop Elements 8 One-on-One ReviewIf you are a newcomer to using Photoshop, this is the book for you. Deke McClelland is one of the Photoshop gurus. Colleen Wheeler is a well known collaborator of Deke. Together, the book is everything the name implies, the book is one-on-one. Copious examples, clearly written instructions, and many illustrations combine to make this an excellent book.
Even for photographers familiar with earlier versions of Photoshop Elements, this is the book to use for learning about the new features of Photoshop Elements 8.
If I have one criticism it is that they usual CD of companion material that accompanied books on earlier versions of Photoshop was omitted. Now, one needs to download via the Internet this material to their computer. I'd rather have it on a CD that I can access directly and not need to add more files to my computer disk.
But, in summary, don't start using Photoshop Elements 8 without this book in hand.

Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography 2.0: Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Better Digital Images Featuring Adobe Photoshop® Elements® ReviewI'm giving this book four stars based almost solely on Rick Sammon's enthusiasm. He is obviously a person who enjoys what he does and likes interacting with others. His writing was lively enough so I read the book in one afternoon. The bottom line problem with this guide is the same bottom line problem I'm finding in all digital photography guides I've encountered. The first thing they want to do is teach you a little basic photography knowledge and the next thing they do is tell you how to use Photoshop tricks to create "artful photos" that, in effect, minimizes the need for knowledge of basic photography. Photography is more than tricks and "secrets of the pros" and Photoshop is a fine tool for photographers to augment their work. Unfortunately, most digital photography teaching vehicles today emphasize the ghastly and tasteless manipulations in Photoshop and fail to emphasize learning basic camera technique. To Rick Sammon's credit, he does provide a measure of how to use tools available for in-camera control as opposed to relying solely on Photoshop corrections and manipulations in post production. But when the chapters on the various Photoshop tools and manipulations come into play, it's still a lot of ghastly and tasteless trickery that takes center stage.
The higher quality, professional and advanced amateur digital cameras that are available today are so sophisticated, it's difficult to really screw up your pictures if you have a basic grasp of photography and how to use the camera's features. Despite this, a lot of people are screwing up their pictures in post production by relying on photo editing software. Sammon's examples in the Photoshop Elements portions of this book point this out very clearly. The "before Photoshop" photos are often preferable to the "after Photoshop" photos. I'm not speaking of basic operations such as minor color corrections, cropping, sharpening, etc. I'm speaking of the use of filters and borders and the cut-and-paste collages that Sammon often refers to as "artistic" which are, in fact, perfect examples of over-processed pseudo-art.
I'm not really picking on Rick Sammon here. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I've enjoyed Sammon's writing and photography in other publications as well. It's just that we really don't need more people playing around with their computers to create the photographic equivalent of black velvet paintings.Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography 2.0: Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Better Digital Images Featuring Adobe Photoshop® Elements® Overview

Adobe Photoshop Elements 7: A Visual Introduction to Digital Photography ReviewI have been a Photoshop Elements user since Version 2. While my artistic photography is strictly film-based (I am a large-format B&W specialist), I have used Photoshop Elements for many years when scanning and preparing my images for my web site [...] and other marketing and publicity activities. Over the past several years, Photoshop Elements has grown considerably in its power, and now contains many of the features traditionally reserved for the professional version of Photoshop. Philip Andrews' new book, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, walked me through all of the new features in a clear and concise way, and is organized so that I can easily select specific subjects without sequentially reading all of the material before. This makes the book ideally suited for someone like me who has some basic knowledge, but needs to come up to speed on the new Elements features. However, the book also contains all of the step-by-step information for someone who is new to digital photography, organized in such a way that they can read as much or as little as they need, depending upon their existing knowledge. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to both the beginner and advanced amateur.Adobe Photoshop Elements 7: A Visual Introduction to Digital Photography Overview

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0: A visual introduction to digital photography ReviewThis is the latest of Philip Andrew's series of books covering Photoshop Elements, now at Version 5, and fully updated, is aimed at those who are new to digital imaging and the software. One of the many strengths of the book is its "backward compatibility"; that is to say, you can use this book, even if you have a previous version of the software. This is achieved by stating clearly at the start of each section what the commands are for versions 1 through to 5. The book is divided into15 Chapters, covering everything from an overview of digital imaging and the software to creating a web photo gallery. In between each of the following topics and more is covered: Getting your pictures into Elements, tonal control, retouching techniques, making and using selections, organising your photos with tags, understanding and using layers, working with text, using painting tools, creating panoramas, preparing images for the web and printing, making creations. A further Chapter contains 12 "real world" projects that can be followed step-by-step to further hone your skills. There is also a useful companion website where there are further downloadable resources and all the photos used in the book are available to download and practice on. In summary, this is an excellent book that I commend to anyone interested in getting the most from the software. Philip Andrews has a clear, concise and easy style, and manages to explain complex terms in an easy to understand way. This, combined with great full colour screen shots and clear step-by-step instructions makes this a must for any Photoshop Elements user.Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0: A visual introduction to digital photography Overview

Deke McClelland's Look & Learn Photoshop 6 ReviewI **LOVE** this book! I've been using Photoshop since version 4 and i'm self-taught. I am not an expert yet but then i don't consider myself a novice either.
This book is for everyone. What i most like about this book is the easy style and sample pages, The quick shortcuts to just about doing everything, and the explanation of why one tool works better than another.
I just attended a 2-day Photoshop class and the instructor highly recommended this book. at first, i thought that it was for the very beginner, but it's some much more. It's like a dictionary... you keep it for reference.
as i glanced at the instructor's book, i noticed that it was truly worn. she said that she's had to buy a second copy because she's used it so much. you can't possibly memorize everything about photoshop.. so why not have the best resource in town?? Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Photographers ReviewDISCLAIMER: In exchange for this review I received a copy of this book for free.
Make no mistake, Philip Andrews' Adobe Photoship Elements 8 For Photographers is a book for photographers. The book has a short digital photography basics section at the beginning, but it is by-and-large written for people who already have a good grasp on photography. There's no explanation of shutter-speed, f-stop, and ISO. This isn't one of the "_____ For Dummies" books, it's a book for people who already know a thing or two. This is purely about Adobe Elements 8.
And it should be. Focal Press and Andrews are trying to write a comprehensive guide to Photoshop Elements. It's well-written, easy to follow, and starts with the programs most basic functions and ends with some truly advanced, in-depth image manipulation.
I suppose at this point it would be useful for me to write a bit about where I'm coming from in relation to photography and Photoshop. I use photography and Photoshop as a tool in my design work. I do a lot of retouching, stylising, photo-correction and image-merging. For awhile I've been interested in learning more about Elements and how much it can do. So, with that in mind, I picked up Andrews's book in exchange for this review and got to learning.
The book is split into three major sections: An introduction to Elements, the tools available in the program, and an "Elements in Action" at the end.
The introduction section covers all of the basics of the program like importing, cropping, a helpful section on scanning, and some basic manipulation (like auto-contrast and red-eye removal). It goes through Elements on a very basic level. It's explained well and has instructions for Mac and Windows.
The tools section is where things start to get good. It begins with a pretty substantial chapter on organisation, which is great. It's crucial to learn the best workflow method and organizational system of a program to use it effectively. The great thing about digital photography is that it's easy to take hundreds of pictures, but having those pictures available and easy to sift through is just as important. Everything from your photos to your tools should be at your fingertips. The book does a good job of explaining how to get your pictures and your albums in top shape using Elements' Smart-Album feature and Adobe Bridge. For anyone planning on amassing a buttload of pictures, this might be the most important section of the book.
The book then moves on to the meat of Photoshop Elements. This is why you spent your money on Elements in the first place. You want to learn how to fix photos that look too dark, aren't framed quite right, or have the wrong color temperature. Maybe you want to make your photos look old-fashioned. Maybe you want to make all of the reds in your photo really pop. Or maybe you want to go crazy with it and make rave posters or photoshop celebrity heads onto naked people's bodies. The possibilities are endless, and this book covers a lot of them.
The book covers way too much ground to mention everything covered here, but it gets into layers, masks, filters, photo-merging, and pretty much anything else you can think of. There are a couple things that I thought were really helpful. They aren't flashy or anything, but they're good to know.
The first is a section on non-detrimental size changes. Sometimes, it seems like nothing is ever the right size. Some element is always too big or too small, so it's important to know how to re-size images without losing information. Unfortunately, the section is buried at the end of "Advanced Techniques," when I think it should go closer to the front-end of the book.
Another useful bit of information is Andrews's "10 Commandments for Good Filter Usage." It's a nice bit of editorialising in a book that's pretty hands-off when it comes to what you should and shouldn't do aesthetically. Some early photoshoppers get crazy with the filters, and their photos suffer as a result, so it's nice to see Andrews try to reign in that urge a bit. Also, the printing section is pretty good. Bad prints can not only ruin good pictures, but also become a substantial waste of money. Andrews' run-through is good for printing at home, but he doesn't go into large-format printing at all, which should have been included in a book with this much depth.
There are a couple minor problems that I have with the book. There are source images that Andrews uses throughout the book, but they are only available to download online. I would have liked an included CD or DVD. At $50, it isn't a cheap book and it would be nice to have all the source material in one package.
Another issue I have with the book is that it could use a glossary. There are hundreds of terms that are Photoshop specific, a glossary would save some backtracking. Another small problem I have with the book is that the keyboard shortcuts should also have been written in shorthand instead of written out in the text. He writes out "Hold the Control button then hit the S button" to save instead of something like "CTRL+S." I would prefer the shorthand in perentheses after writing it out, because it's easier to scan the page and see what the shortcuts are instead of having to re-read the paragraphs for the shortcuts. After all, learning keyboard shortcuts makes for more efficient photoshopping.
Photoshop Elements 8 For Photographers is a great book for learning the program. Honestly, the book really opened my eyes to what Photoshop Elements 8 is capable of and both the program and the book far exceeded my expectations. Good job.Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Photographers Overview

Photoshop Elements 8 After the Shoot ReviewThis book is by far the best book on Photoshop Elements I've found. It clearly explains how -- and why -- to use the features of Elements, and it's loaded with useful, practical tips. It will save you hours (days?) of time over trying to figure out how to best use PSE on your own. And the instructions are useful for previous versions of PSE, too. Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers ReviewI've been using Photoshop Elements 9: The Missing Manual and How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 9 as guides to learning PE9. I purchased this book to complete my Elements library, lured by the appeal to photographers in its title. I've found this book to have some severe short comings compared to the other two books I'm using. Just one example: Dodging and burning are classic techniques used by the darkroom photographer. Elements has digital tools specifically designed for these processes. The only reference to these tools in Elements for Photographers is an indication that they exist in the tool bar. There is no description of how to use them; instead the book describes a very clumsy method for dodging and burning. The Missing Manual devotes three pages to these techniques and tools. The layout of this book is attractive and the workflow suggestions for accomplishing certain tasks are helpful. Overall though there seems to be too much space devoted to topics that could be covered in a few pages [forty-one pages set aside for info regarding sharing pictures on-line and the like?] and not enough space devoted to really mastering the tools in the program. Finally, finding text that read Elements 8 when the it should have read Elements 9 [a case of sloppy editing at best] did not inspire confidence. Overall, this book can't compete with the other PE9 guides I'm using.Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers Overview
