Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop ReviewArchitectural Desktop is conceptually easy to understand, but expert guidence is required in order to use all it's features to produce "real" work, . This is a book written by an Architect who intimately knows ADT and also knows how Architects work. The book is very well written, it is clear and useful in its presentation. I wasn't getting very far with ADT until I read this book, (and I've read other ADT books). I highly recommend it.Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop OverviewRather than a reference, this text teaches Autodesk Architectural Desktop (ADT) by foregrounding its conceptual aspects. The extensive tutorials are directed at architects, interior designers, facilities planners, and students. With this audience in mind, the design development and construction doc

AutoCAD 2000i Tutorial - First Level: 2D Fundamentals ReviewThis is a very well written, easy to follow guide for autocad 2000i. The author leads you through exercises to increase your confidence and competence as you gain experience that will help you in other areas of the use of autocad. That said, please remember this is for a rank beginner (like me). I found this book to be extremely useful, especially for someone who is fairly computer illiterate. I highly recommend this book.AutoCAD 2000i Tutorial - First Level: 2D Fundamentals Overview

Autocad 2006: One Step at a Time - Part I ReviewGood book. Easy to follow instructions (really step-by-step as opposed to many books that claim to be). Saved me the money it would've cost for a class. Wish it had come in one volume, but no real problem. Author even helped me when I had a problem.

AutoCAD 2011: One Step at a Time ReviewI started using the One Step at a Time Autocad books with the 2009 release, but with the changes in 2011, I thought I'd better do some studying. I checked a couple other texts in the bookstore, but still haven't found anything to rival the One Step at a Time book for ease of use, friendly style, and training!
Autocad has grown into (frightening) parametric design (I think it started in the 2010 release) and this book walked me through it without a hiccup. Hatching also changed and the ribbon has really come into its own in many areas of the application.
Thanks to those who made the OSAAT series available!AutoCAD 2011: One Step at a Time Overview

Inside SolidWorks 2003 ReviewPeople who go to the SolidWorks user group on Deja News know Dave Murray as a regular poster who really knows his stuff; his book confirms the breadth of his knowledge, and does it in the same easy to access style that he writes with to the newsgroup. I had been a 40+ hour a week user of SolidWorks for over a year when I ran across Inside SolidWorks. Reading this book got me excited, because even after all of my time with the software (with tons of experimentation and late nights attempting to create 'challenging' parts) this book opened my eyes to a lot of stuff that I would have never thought to try on my own and would otherwise have had no real good reason to know. Every few pages I ran across a little nugget that increased my productivity, or encouraged me to try something I didn't know was possible. Though the majority of it will be review, I think that advance users will get their 50 bucks worth just out of learning a few things that will get them home a little earlier. (note to advanced users: don't expect to learn much new stuff about sweeps, lofts, or filleting. In depth details on these black arts are beyond the scope of this book)
It's beginners, however, that will realize the greatest benefit. After doing the standard 30 minute jump start tutorial, I would recommend that a new guy put aside the tutorial book that comes with the software and instead spend their time digging into Inside SolidWorks. It does a very clear job of introducing the software (especially the mindset required for modeling with a feature based modeler), with a special focus on how to avoid the standard problems and sidestep the pitfalls that new users usually encounter. I wish that I had Inside SolidWOrks when going through the steep part of my learning curve.
The big disappointment with the book? Like most SolidWorks tutorials, this book almost completely sidesteps the most challenging and potentially rewarding part of using the software: building parts in the context of an assembly (what is often called the 'top down' method). An extra chapter on 'in context relationships', good modeling practices when building parts from inside assemblies, and a good introduction on how parametric relationships can make or destroy your parts would have made this a five star book. Every user who builds from the top down knows the crushing pain of moving a component in an assembly and seeing the feature trees of some or all of his/her components turn red with rebuild errors (the guy I sit next to refers to this phenomenon as seeing his screen fill with blood); I would have liked to see the author tackle this complicated issue with the same thoroughness and competence that he approaches all of the other subjectsInside SolidWorks 2003 OverviewFully updated to incorporate all of the newest features and functions of SolidWorks? 2003, this edition of Inside SolidWorks invites users to leverage a variety of manufacturing disciplines as a means of learning how to make optimal use of today's most popular Windows?-native, 3D parametric modeling tool. An invaluable guide to mastering commands, this edition of the most popular SolidWorks how-to and reference manual has been newly reorganized to guide readers through a series of topics related to specific design techniques and professional manufacturing practices more seamlessly than ever before. Numerous hands-on exercises, helpful graphics, and step-by-step procedures are also featured throughout the book to explain the intricacies of the software while exposing the exciting array of options available to skilled SolidWorks users. A "must" for students and professionals of all abilities, Inside SolidWorks 2003 also includes a useful discussion concerning the thought processes required to work successfully with solid modelers of all types.

SolidWorks For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) ReviewThe book spends the first 52 out of 322 pages explaining to the reader how to establish and setup a SW session. It is not until page 81 that it addresses the Feature toolbar. There are a few areas in this book that provides sound engineering design principles for any user, using any 2D or 3D software package. The book is very disappointing with the lack of specific usefully information on using SW and sounds more like a marketing and sales pitch / tool for purchasing SW.
Chapter 10 informs the reader on 10 places to go, to learn SW. I wanted the book to do this!
The enclosed CD includes Case Studies, Customer testimonials and Sales and Marketing hoopla. The CD is totally worthless for someone who purchased the book to learn SW. If I wanted Sales literature, I would have obtained free literature through a VAR.

CATIA V5R20 for Designers ReviewI bought this book upon purchasing and downloading the CATIA V5R20 Student Edition. One fo the issues today with getting a job in the design field is there is always that software you "need to know" to get the job. After doing some research and finding out which companies may use CATIA, I had to add this software to the list of 3D-CAD Softwares to "need to know".
This book is excellent for beginners and people who are also not quite beginners to 3D Modeling.CATIA V5R20 for Designers Overview

The Fundamentals of SolidWorks 2007 ReviewWhen my technology director asked me to create a pre-engineering class, I didn't know where to start. After talking to some high tech parents, they introduced me to SolidWorks. The students love it. It was so easy to get started and now my students are better than me. But I wanted to do more so I bought a VEX robot kit.
This book is a great way to combine learning CAD and building actually robots. The book takes students through making parts and in less than a week, students are creating parts on their own. With the book, my students have instructions on how to model the parts and compare to the actual parts. Then they assemble the parts in different configurations. Combining this book with VEX robot kit has been an affordable way to introduce engineering into the classroom. On parent's night, students present their portfolios complete with drawings. My director is happy, my students are happy and next term I have a full enrollment. The Fundamentals of SolidWorks 2007 OverviewThe Fundamentals of SolidWorks 2007 is designed for students, educators, hobbyists, and engineers to learn the basic principles of SolidWorks as it relates to the design of the VEXplorer robot. The VEXplorer is a 300 part robot kit manufactured by Innovation First, Inc. and Revell Inc. Innovation first engineers utilized SolidWorks to design the robot. Throughout this book, you will recreate VEXplorer components by developing SolidWorks parts, assemblies, drawings, photo-realistic renderings, analyses, and animations. This book starts out with a basic overview of the concepts and terminology used throughout this book using SolidWorks software. Each chapter addresses key features and tools in SolidWorks. The chapters provide individual short practice tutorials to review the required competencies. All models for the 40+ tutorials are provided on the CD enclosed with the book, along with their solutions.Table of ContentsIntroduction 1.Basic Theory and Drawing Theory 2.Cover Part, SimpleGear Part, and Gear Extension Part3.Assembly Modeling 4.Drawing and eDrawing 5.PhotoWorks, COSMOSXpress, and Animator Appendix Index

Learning Mastercam Mill X Step by Step in 2D ReviewThe material is worthwhile, but the editors have let down the authors on this text. I found too many errors to be excused. Errors focused on spelling and missing keystroke information.
Come on guys! Spelling errors are inexcusable these days! Key stroke sequence errors should have been fixed in the editing process.
I have worked with AutoCAD for 19 years, and I have been writing CNC programs for 8 years. I was able to deduce the correct keystroke information, but I think this would be a difficult (frustrating) text for the novice.Learning Mastercam Mill X Step by Step in 2D Overview

Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2006 ReviewI recently purchased Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2006, by Scott Onstott, and have already found it to be an invaluable resource in my transition from AutoCAD LT 2002 to Autodesk's Architectural Desktop 2006.
Admittedly; I still have not completely finished the book, yet it has already proven to be an essential tool to transition to Architectural Desktop 2006. Previously, the amount of information needed to reach drawing proficiency and remain productive at work has been the primary reason I have not upgraded my AutoCAD platform. It wasn't until I found this book and started the tutorials I gained the skills and confidence to upgrade to such a far superior program.
Without a doubt, one of the book's greatest strengths is its dual functionality. For example, when time permits I can sit down and follow along with the tutorials for an in depth learning experience similar to a classroom type lecture. At the same time, the book is a great reference tool for the times when deadlines are pending and production is essential.
I would give this book and excellent review and recommend it to others in my office.

The Fundamentals of SolidWorks 2008 ReviewAfter working with VEX robots and CO2 cars for 2 years in summer camp, I decided to switch from Autocad to SolidWorks and add some 3D CAD to my program. This book is a great help introducing students to 3D modeling. Students just love the SolidWorks and they can follow the book with little intervention from me. This is a life saver when you have 30 plus students in a class.
The best part of the book is all the model files of the VEXplorer, VEX Starter Kit, and F1 in Schools car assembly. These models are great time savers and really get kids excited about learning. But don't tell them that they are learning, just having fun...

AutoCAD 2006: A Problem Solving Approach ReviewThis is a big book, approximately 1,340 pages. We adopted the book for three freshman drafting classes. The 2005 book was adopted last year. This is the first year that I taught using a book written by Sham Tickoo. It was a mistake. The size of the book has discouraged most students from using it. Once the students get past the size, they noticed that most of the information in the book, both; 2005 and 2006 was out of the AutoCAD help files. I wonder how the book can be published with this similar information?
The book is very wordy and it seems that the author wants to fill pages with AutoCAD help documents. Use the AutoCAD help documents and buy a different book.

The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects: Creative Techniques for Photographers, Artists, and Designers ReviewGIMP, or the GNU Image Manipulation Program to give it its proper name, is a graphics-editing program broadly similar to Adobe Photoshop in terms of functionality. The GIMP is an open source program that can be freely downloaded and installed on most computers, including maps. But on the downside it doesn't come with a manual, so figuring out how to use GIMP can be tricky.
But 'The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects' isn't simply a book explaining what all the different tools and features do. Michael Hammel pitches this book quite a bit higher than that, focusing instead on how to use GIMP to perform a variety of useful and common tasks. From trick photography to building graphics for web sites, Hammel leads the reader expertly through nicely illustrated tutorials. The end result is more than simply a better understanding of the program, but a richer appreciation of what the program can be used to do.
There are six chapters, the first of which introduces many of the basic concepts. Although there is some attention given to where the relevant tools are found and how to use them, the focus here is on what they do and why you need them. Fundamental to success with any graphics program is understanding how different tools work when applied together, and Hammel finishes off this chapter with a set of multi-function tutorials that underline this point.
The second chapter concentrates on manipulating photographs. These include softening images, adding motion effects, and creating reflections. In each case the process is taken step-by-step, with clear text and relevant screenshots. At this point it's also worth mentioning something about the layout of the book. No Starch has really done a good job here. The book is wider than it is tall, and each page holds two columns of text. The flexible binding lets the book stay open at any page. As a result, it's an easy book to use alongside the computer.
The next chapter is about creating artwork for web sites. These include things like tiles for web page backgrounds, buttons, tabs, and menu bars. The first tutorial in this batch is all about creating glossy, gel-like buttons of the type Macintosh users will be familiar with. One of the later tutorials looks at the ubiquitous rollover buttons, though from the perspective of creating the actual artwork required rather than the necessary JavaScript or CSS coding. That said, if you use a WYSIWYG web page layout program like Freeway, you probably won't need to manually any of that sort of code to your page anyway; all you need are the graphics.
Like all the other chapters, the web design chapter finishes with a collection of useful tips. Some of these should be required reading for any web designer, and it's great to see the author lay them out fair and square.
The fourth chapter is very unusual but actually makes a lot of sense. It's a chapter devoted to creating advertising. While no substitute for a degree in marketing, there's some great stuff here for anyone who needs to produce things like packaging and posters. Small businesses attracted to GIMP by its low cost will likely find this chapter worth the price of the book alone. On the other hand, some of the tutorials in this section are only incidentally useful for advertising purposes though, and could be just as relevant to anyone creating computer artwork. Again, there's a wrap-up section with a slew of useful tips and tricks.
Chapter five brings text into the mix. This chapter kicks off with some tutorials covering things like neon, metallic, and gel-like text, among other typographic effects.
The last chapter is specifically for software developers, and illustrates the ways in which GIMP can be used to design and prototype application interfaces. While a clever and potentially useful chapter, what was obviously missing from this section of the book was something on designing icons for programs. The book then rounds off with a detailed index.
For $45 this isn't a cheap book, especially when you consider that GIMP itself is free and comes with its own online guides and tutorials. The question is whether having things laid out clearly and logically in a nicely illustrated book justifies the cost. In the opinion of this reviewer at least, the answer is yes. For the GIMP user looking to go beyond simply cropping and resizing digital images, this book is highly recommended. The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects: Creative Techniques for Photographers, Artists, and Designers Overview
The GIMP, an image editor whose power and ease-of-use rivals that of Adobe Photoshop, is one of the world's most popular free software projects. Artists and designers have relied on the GIMP since 1995 to retouch photographs, composite multiple images, and create new artwork from scratch.

The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects shows you how to harness the GIMP's powerful features to produce professional-looking advertisements, impressive photographic effects, as well as logos and text effects. And author Michael J. Hammel, who has used the GIMP since its first public release, won't mince words or waste your time. His extensively illustrated, step-by-step tutorials are perfect for hands-on learning and experimentation. After a crash course in using the GIMP's interface and core tools (such as brushes, patterns, selections, layers, modes, and masks), you'll learn:
Photographic techniques to simulate ripped edges, create sepia-toned antique images, swap colors, produce motion blurs, alter depth of field, and even fix rips in an old photo Web design techniques to create tiled patterns, navigation tabs, rollovers, and fancy buttons and borders Type effects to create depth, perspective shadows, metallic and distressed text, and neon and graffiti lettering Advertising effects to produce movie posters and package designs; simulate clouds, cracks, cloth, and underwater effects; and create specialized lighting Interface design tips for creating textures, navigation bars, and buttons
Whether you're new to the GIMP or you've been playing with this powerful software for years, The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects is sure to teach you some new tricks.

Visit the book's companion site for additional tutorials and resources. http://www.graphics-muse.org/artistsguide/

SolidWorks 2010 Part II - Advanced Techniques ReviewAdvanced mean a lot of things to different people; this book to me is not advanced. I'm not sure what it is? It does not cover surfaces, equations, complex design tables, assemblies (two, three or more levels of configurations) advanced system and document options or a simple item like Top-down assemblies. The one example in the book that addresses a Top-down assembly does not even start with the user creating a 3D sketch or a layout sketch. You open a model and then starting working with it. There is very little on Advanced or Mechanical mates. The tutorials are very limited and the models user poor design techniques.SolidWorks 2010 Part II - Advanced Techniques Overview

Mastering Autodesk Inventor 2009 and Autodesk Inventor LT 2009 ReviewAs the previous reviewer points out, this is not a book for those who are new to Inventor. I originally bought this book to help my new engineer, but quickly realized that the intended reader is someone with some Inventor time under their belt.
In going through it for my own benefit as an experienced user, I'm pleased to have found a reference for the Inventor tools I don't use all the time. It's certainly not a good book for the beginner, but if you've used Inventor for a while and have the basics down, then this book has some hard to find information in it. The chapters on large assemblies, the design accelerator wizards, and weldments will all be a big help.
I picked up a lot of things from just flipping through the tips from Sean Dotson that are sprinkled throughout all of the chapters as well. These tell you things about how stuff really works from a user's point of view. There is also a chapter called Inventor Tools Overview, that has information explaining several utilities and functions that I wish I'd known about last year.
If you're looking for a book to learn the basics this is a poor choice, but if you're looking for a reference that goes beyond the basics you'll want this on your shelf.Mastering Autodesk Inventor 2009 and Autodesk Inventor LT 2009 OverviewThe expert content in Mastering Autodesk® Inventor 2009 and Autodesk InventorLT 2009 will help you learn advanced related to the industry-leading 3D mechanical design software. CAD for Interiors Basics, with DVD ReviewThis book falls into an interesting balance for the user.
First, it takes the point of view that the interior designer has to be able to produce drawings to illustrate the buildings he is designing. In today's world that really means that the student has to use a computer assisted design package.
Second it accepts that AutoCAD is the default standard for CAD systems. The author also realizes that AutoCAD has become so big, so powerful and so all encompassing that while it can be used for almost any kind of design job there is a subset of its capabilities, 'the basics' if you will, that the interior designer will really need to know.
As such, he has presented a basic AutoCAD manual oriented to the interior designer. He uses terminology from the interior design world rather than something else like say the plumbing world. And second as the title of the book says, he teaches the basics, the core commands, of using AutoCAD. With this book you can get your interior design job completed. And if you need to know more you can go to a more advanced book.
The DVD included with the book consists primarily of video presentations that talk about and illustrate the functionality of these core commands.CAD for Interiors Basics, with DVD Overview

This book walks the reader through step-by-step for various commands and shows various ways to initiate the command (icon, drop down menu, command line) to make Autocad more user friendly to the reader's personal computer styles. I recommend this book for those in the civil engineering field. There are some steps that were not covered in this book that are probably considered intermediate drafting techniques, like inserting maps to scale.AutoCAD 2008 Essentials (Engineering) Overview

Beginning AutoCAD 2009: Exercise Workbook ReviewThis is an excellent book. Very easy to understand. It takes you one step at a time. I tried to learn AutoCAD on my own but it seemed sooooo complicated. But then I found this book. Oh my what a differnce. I keep it close at hand to refer back to. Start at the beginning and just work your way through to the end and you will be a successful AutoCAD user.Beginning AutoCAD 2009: Exercise Workbook OverviewAutoCAD 2009 30-Day Trial Version included on the enclosed CDs. AutoCAD 2009 Tutor for Engineering Graphics (Autodesk) ReviewCame a Day Early that was nice, but very poor packaging. Nothing was wrap around the book to protect from beating and the cardboard box dirtied the whole book. It wont even scrub off. A couple of bent pages that's fine but it looks like it got ran over by a car with a in craved dirt stain. 1/4 of the Cover. For a Brand New book it seems like it has been used for years the way i received it today.AutoCAD 2009 Tutor for Engineering Graphics (Autodesk) OverviewThis classic reference work features self-paced tutorials that lead readers from simple one-view engineering drawings to geometric constructions, multiview projections, section and auxiliary views, 3D solid modeling, and photorealistic rendering. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 ReviewGary Limit's propensity for writing textbooks throughout the years truly comes out in this new Wildfire 5.0 version. I could not ask for a better manual to instruct my students with. Concise and well presented with a strong approach on appropriate parametric modeling techniques that are not usually covered in other CAD books. This is without a doubt the best-written introduction book on Pro/Engineer I have ever worked with. It is also quite good as an upgrade book. Not only does it cover parametric modeling with a step-by-step approach were one learned technique builds on another, but it also covers assembles and detailing as well. It comprehensively covers the new Wildfire 5.0 interface and does not neglect the massive interface change to the detailing package. The book includes access to his personal web page "CAD-Resources" dot com, with a link for a free Tryout Edition of Pro/ENGINEER as well as over a dozen complimentary projects that add hundreds of free pages for the user to access and the ability to stretch and practice what they have learned. What a deal...If you find a better introductory Pro/E book I will eat this one and the entire series!Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 Overview
