Autodesk Maya 2010: The Modeling and Animation Handbook (Autodesk Maya Techniques: Offical Autodesk Training Guides) ReviewThis book was required by one of my 3d animation classes. after doing several of the tutorials my class mates and i realized that the authors frequently skip steps, have poor image examples, and are hard to learn from. i do not recommend this book to anyone.Autodesk Maya 2010: The Modeling and Animation Handbook (Autodesk Maya Techniques: Offical Autodesk Training Guides) Overview

Learning Autodesk Maya 2010: Foundation (Autodesk Maya Techniques: Offical Autodesk Training Guides) ReviewI reviewed the 2009 version, then returned that in favor of this one since I have Maya 2010. Unfortunately this book falls short in the same way.
Some steps require basic knowledge of Maya or you'll get lost. At one point you create an object, then on the next page, you'll notice that the object has been moved above the plane, but there's no mention of this until it happens again later with another object.
There were a few steps that I was able to follow based on prior learning that made up for the lack of details in this book. Like the 2009 version, the book lost me when after guiding me through the production of a bunch of houses, it instructs you to create a cylinder which will be a light post. Cool. So you go into component mode and it leaves you, stating "shape the geometry as follows". Um, I am a b-e-g-i-n-n-e-r.
Again I referred to prior learning, recalling how to manipulate objects in component mode. I also thought that I was being too critical. After all, in a classroom, maybe a instructor would challenge the student to produce based on what has been taught. I don't mind that form of learning IF there's an 'answer' somewhere, like how to do it. I don't see a cross-reference.
My light post came out okay. But next, there was a more complicated object, and the instructions? Create a prism, enter a few numerical settings for the geometry then "shape the light as follows" referring to a photo of a completed object. HOW? I only made it to page 70 (of 600+) and I'm lost already. This from someone who took Maya for 2 semesters in college years ago, was able to create a complicated object following video tutorials online, and is a motion graphics artist.
I can follow good instructions, but I opted for this book to really understand 3D creation in Maya so that I can get an assignment and know how to build it, what tools to use and why vs. following tutorials with 'wow' factors based on advanced users' creativity that leave me having absorbed nothing suited for my less advanced skillset. I hope to find that book, but this isn't it.Learning Autodesk Maya 2010: Foundation (Autodesk Maya Techniques: Offical Autodesk Training Guides) OverviewNew coverage, art, and tutorials of the latest features of the new Maya 2010

Introducing Maya 5: 3D for Beginners ReviewThis book is extremely well written. Each chapter is explained thoroughly enough so that if you are truly a beginner opening Maya for the first time you will easily be able to follow instructions. The terminology used in the book is at a level where all can follow. He touched upon each aspect of Maya with enough detail to give a strong basis of understanding for the program. I especially like where he created a detailed model using primitives and simple modeling tools (i.e. catapult). He succesfully uses the same project to show several different concepts of 3D as you advance through the book.Introducing Maya 5: 3D for Beginners OverviewAlias Wavefront's Maya is the premier tool for 3D modeling, animation, and rendering. It is used by such film houses as Industrial, Light & Magic, Pixar, and Disney for creating 3D animation and special effects. This Maya Press title—a cooperative publication between Sybex and Alias Wavefront—is the perfect introduction to 3D and Maya.

Introducing Revit Architecture 2010: BIM for Beginners ReviewThe "Introducing Revit Architecture 2010-BIM for beginners" is a well-put together book. I am rating this book 4 star because it's a book I have be able to really understand and be able to refer back to often and get quick and easy feed back.
PROS:
What I found to be good about this book is, that it's in fact a beginners book, so the layout is very simple, organized and easy to follow. The placement of sub categories in each chapter makes finding the right material very easy. I liked that most sub categories have a step-by-step run through of the process with images (such as modeling images, as well as window box screen shots) that correspond with the process your going through.
CONS:
The bad part of this book is also the good part...the fact that it's a beginner's book. I have found on multiple occasions that I had trouble with a certain situation during the designing process that I referred back to the book and it only provided an overview of the process and suggested I get a more advanced book (go figure).
OVERALL:
Overall I'm am glad I got this book, it is helpful and very easy to follow, I am one of those people that have a hard time following text books so I was surprised at my ability to navigate and actually continue to refer back to this book on multiple occasion. The program its self is relatively simple to grasp especially if you have dealt with other BIM software's that do have as much and are twice as hard to figure out.Introducing Revit Architecture 2010: BIM for Beginners OverviewLearn the leading BIM software quickly and easily with this book's detailed discussions and practical exercises

3ds Max 2011 Bible ReviewThis book can be described as "the ramblings of someone who knows how to use 3dsMax but not how to teach it". It's boring and painful to try and follow along with. Too much talk, not enough action and especially not enough pics/diagrams! For people just beginning with Max, you'll be wasting a lot time reading and then re-reading and then re-re-reading the text trying to work out where to find the command, menu, object etc, that the book's trying to explain or the affects different tasks have on your models whereas simple labelled diagrams and screenshots would've done the job a lot more efficiently.
The book gives some good direction on where to start learning 3dsMax but the Autodesk help is far better at actually explaining things, the Autodesk tutorials are also excellent!
When you finally get to the important chapter on poly modelling, the book really loses the plot, 50 pages describing the 5 million commands all of which are explained in the 3dsMax help file, the book just takes longer to get through. Then the opening sentence of the following chapter says "the previous chapter 'covered' everything you need to know about poly modelling". It probably did, but it taught nothing!
It's too "hands off", the few tutorials which are covered and included on the dvd have too much of the work already done, so you'll complete the tutorial and wonder what the point was? (The DVD includes a heap of tutorial files but hardly any are actually covered in the book.)
It's a big book and i can appreciate the work that's gone into it but it could be condensed right down by cutting out the rambling and getting to the point.
I personally don't see the need for this book as the tutorials and help provided by Autodesk get you up and running WAY quicker with plenty of screenshots to back up what's being said. Unfortunately i had already bought the book and wasted a lot of time going through it before i worked this out.

3ds Max 2012 Bible ReviewHate it i am paying $10 less than a new print book version and no CD content. Looks like a mistake buying the Kindle version.
Searched, checked, and have a email to support awaiting answer if i get the CD contents or not. *sigh*

Mastering mental ray: Rendering Techniques for 3D and CAD Professionals ReviewThe book is printed in color and written for the latest release of Autodesk 3ds Max and Max Design 2011. That's huge! When learning Mental Ray nothing is more important than seeing the results (good or bad) clearly illustrated and based on the latest release of the software. For seasoned production artists, the breakdown of some of the fundamentals that may have been lost or glossed over is well needed and clearly communicated. Building on those fundamentals, Jennifer walks you through setting up Mental Ray early on in scene creation and then how to tweak settings as the scene evolves guiding you to the desired result. Using Mental Ray without guidance can sometimes put you in a position of being one radio button or check box away from success. The problem is which radio button or check box will make the difference? Thanks to Jennifer's skillful technical writing and illustrations (in color!), this problem can now be solved allowing the user to create stunning visualizations without the serious time penalty of trial and error or deeper research.
Mastering Mental Ray is a much needed resource for the growing Mental Ray community.

Introducing Revit Architecture 2009: BIM for Beginners ReviewThis is a good start for beginners, there are a lot of examples that make this a good reference to start with. One thing that i did not like was the size of the text, it was small and the window shots were very hard to read, outside of that it is a good book.Introducing Revit Architecture 2009: BIM for Beginners Overview
