If you're a die-hard Mac user, you've probably done a number of these already. But for those who are making the switch from PC to Mac, there's a world of possibilities out there that are just waiting to be explored. Ballew and Shalat have compiled a number of interesting projects you can try out, and the instructions are extremely easy to follow. Each project starts out with a list of what you'll need as well as what it will cost. That certainly beats getting halfway into something, only to find out that you don't have the critical component (and don't want to spend the money for it, either). From there, the work is divided up into a number of discrete steps, such as gather up the hardware, make the connection, install additional software, etc. Each step has a number of substeps that walk you through what's needed to complete everything. Very easy to follow, and even a basic understanding of computers should be enough to get through most of these... You can even head over to the CNET site on-line and see video versions of the same projects. So they have both the "show me" and "tell me" learners covered... :)
A nice gift choice for someone you know who just got a Mac, or for yourself with that check from Aunt Mary...

Macromedia Studio MX 2004 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies ReviewMacromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.
As I said, with such a breadth of information the book is definately a bargain. However, that advantage is also the book's primary downfall I feel. It says 7 books in one, but if that is true it is SEVEN SHORT BOOKS. Each book is definately not the standard "For Dummies" length. This lends itself to make it 7 abridged-sized books. The adbridgement comes by removing all of the discussion on the more advanced features of the program. Unfortunately the extreme basics are also belabored.
All of that means that the book will be useful to help you get started in Macromedia Studio, but after you have a little more than a few hours of experience in the software suite you will find the book increasingly useless. Because the features which a mildly seasoned user will find difficult to master are not covered, this book is not such a great value if the purchaser already has mild to moderate background experience with MX software.
So with that review in mind take it or leave according to your lot. If you are new to Macromedia Studio MX and want some help for the first month or so getting up and running, this is a great resource. But if you have already pushed through the growing pains of climbing the learning curve, you may want to pass on this one for a more advanced text.Macromedia Studio MX 2004 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies Overview

AutoCAD 2006: A Problem Solving Approach ReviewThis is a big book, approximately 1,340 pages. We adopted the book for three freshman drafting classes. The 2005 book was adopted last year. This is the first year that I taught using a book written by Sham Tickoo. It was a mistake. The size of the book has discouraged most students from using it. Once the students get past the size, they noticed that most of the information in the book, both; 2005 and 2006 was out of the AutoCAD help files. I wonder how the book can be published with this similar information?
The book is very wordy and it seems that the author wants to fill pages with AutoCAD help documents. Use the AutoCAD help documents and buy a different book.

I had some background knowledge of Autocad from a class taken over ten years ago and had forgotten most of the commands. Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop (DV Expert Series) ReviewIt must first be said that Douglas Spotted Eagle obviously understands Vegas, which is the best NLE program for its price. But this book did not live up to the editorial review hype
I purchased this manual hoping for an in-depth Vegas Pro 8 learning experience, but I am somewhat disappointed. Editing mistakes within the book made some parts a bit confusing. And if a working veg file is on the DVD to follow what the book is teaching, use the same image as in the book.. But, the author did do a great job of explaining things that were previously murky to me. (Masking, for example.)
The single most important thing I gleaned is what Douglas Spotted Eagle espouses throughout this manual. EXPERIMENT. Check out every fx - every transition - every filter. Add multiple fx to events - see what happens.
The workshop is advertized as 528 pages, so I figured it would be worth the price. But a chapter touting plug-ins should not have been included. I can get that kind of info by Googling.
By the way, there are many Vegas Pro 8 user "tutorials" posted on YouTube. Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 ReviewHow many times have you thought you took the perfect picture only to discover that there were flaws in the photo I recently tried out Corel's Paint Shop Pro X2 software which retails for $ 99.99.One disclaimer, I have used the various earlier Paint Shop versions in the past. This software is economical to purchase and fairly easy to use. The learning curve is too not difficult to grasp.
The included Photo X2 printed manual provided is complete, but has no illustrations. Photo editing is very color intensive and in some ways your finished photo is artwork. Fortunately, I had assistance learning Paint Shop Pro X2. Two excellent books are Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Ken McMahon published by Focal Press and Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Diane Koers published by Cengage Learning. These both retail for $29.99 each. Ken McMahon's book is very complete and a great tool for a beginner to intermediate photo edit. Ken's book has numerous graphics and is an easy read and lays out different options a photo editor can implement. Diane Koers book's is 392 Pages and written as a text book for a classroom, it is for more intensive learning and it comes with a sample CD. Both books bring added information to the Pro X2 software and a different point of view on how to use it.
There are multiple things you can do to enhance your photo with Photo X2.
The number one reason is a one step photo fixer which is like taking your photo to a lab. I was somewhat skeptical of this until I used the photo fixer. I tried this option on a group photo, where the lighting was all wrong. There were dark areas and areas with too much ambient light. I clicked on one step photo fixer and corrected the lighting of the photo and the result was spectacular. The other problem I had was the group of people were in a semi-circle in the photo not in a straight line. I used a tool called a perspective tool and adjusted the group to a straight line. I now had the perfect photo with a lot of help from Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.The hardest concept to understand with Photo X2 photo software is the use of layers. The first layer is the background and then additional layers are placed on top of the first. The photo editor has the option to change layers around and make them more transparent or opaque. A good visualization of this is a group of transparent plastic sheets with designs on them. They layers are all stacked on top of one another for a finished photo. A use of this if you want to add text to a photo, another person to the photo or item. The photo editor will allow you move the layers around much like shuffling a deck of cards.
For a Cub Scout function, I needed to print out some special photos. I didn't have a matt for the photos but X2 has a photo frame option which became my matt. The next step I used was adding the names of the Scouts in color. The finished photo was a big hit with the parents and the Scouts. Parents complimented me and asked me how I was able to make the photo.
My last project was one of field expediency. I needed wrapping paper for my wife's Valentine Day gift. I opened X2 and selected a red background for the paper. I typed in Happy Valentines in different font sizes and type faces. I used the picture tube options for added effect. . There are different designs of tubes. I used the flower tube and laid down different flowers on the paper and printed it out. By the way, my wife liked the paper and thought I bought it at the store.
There are more things that X2 can do like coloring black and white photos, removing red eye, scratches in photographs, 3D effects, and painting your own photograph than I have space to write about.
If you are the market for fairly reasonable and easy to use photo software Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is well worth the investment. To get the most out the software I would recommend Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Ken McMahon and Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Diane Koers.MAJ (ret) Eric Shuler NJARNGPicture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 Overview

The textbooks required for the classes where all designed as tutorials and I wanted strictly a reference manual as a complement to these books to look up AutoCAD 2008 commands, aliases, etc. (especially aliases as I prefer using the keyboard for command entry as opposed to menus or toolbar buttons). This book has been all I expected it to be, and has been and continues to be a nice resource. I have been around PCs & PC software for a while now, and this book reminds me of the command reference manuals that used to come with PC software back in the day - a straight-forward, alphabetical listing of commands, each with all the available options, etc. listed.
Bottom-line is I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for a command reference. Otherwise, if you are looking for a tutorial approach, look elsewhere. For mechanical drafting, I would recommend The AutoCAD 2008 Tutor for Engineering Graphics - this was the main textbook for two of my drafting classes.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Bible (CourseSmart) ReviewThis book started out great. After some explanation, it guided me through a simple video editing project in the first chapter that worked and communicated some basic ideas. It got me excited about learning more and then it disappointed me bitterly.
The rest of the book does not teach the way the first chapter does. It does do a systematic and fairly thorough job of explaining things in the interface but the usable examples are few and far between. This works well for some people but not for me. I learn better by doing along with the reading. This guide is woefully inadequate for that. Still, it is a handy reference. It's too bad I will have to further my training elsewhere.

Photoshop CS3 Essential Skills (Photography Essential Skills) ReviewI have read four other books on the new Photoshop CS3 - all of which quickly became too complicated. After all, I want to produce excellent pictures with my Nikon 80D SLR, and am learning Photoshop CS3 from scratch, but other writers seem compelled to include, in books labelled as introductory, the most arcane or esoteric features of this magnificent software. They do so while neglecting basic issues like capturing and enhancing a RAW picture for transmitting across the web.
So I was relieved to find this 430-page book, which begins with "Digital Basics" and waits until P375 to deal with "Posterization" and suchlike. Check Amazon's "Search Inside" feature and look at the Contents. You'll see that this is a book for photographers, as well as professional web designers, for example. It is even more attractively designed than most, and is accompanied by a DVD with loads of useful information (readily accessible in spite of one odd review here). The DVD has more than eight hours of instruction by the authors in subjects ranging in complexity from the use of simple hand tools to montage and special-effects.
The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, and (unlike other books on the subject) contain no glaring errors of fact or syntax. The authors have clearly taken care to avoid careless editing. Microsoft Office Publisher 2007: Complete Concepts and Techniques (Shelly Cashman) ReviewInstructional books for Microsoft Publisher 2007 are hard to find; but I absolutely lucked out when I stumbled across this one. This book has all the features a novice to the software would need, presented in a way that said novice would need it presented:
1. right off the bat you are immediately engaged and deep sunk in real-life Publisher work that may quell some of those fears (lied on your resume and told your new boss that you knew Publisher 2007 even though you barely have passing acquaintance?)
2. in order to improve your memory of what you've learned, there are notes, tips, and reminders galore on the page, but not in a distracting, too-much-on-the-page way.
3. instructions take you step-by-step and screen-by-screen and suggests ways for you to experiment and explore.
4. there are even narratives on how to plan a publishing project and,
5. LOTS of end of chapter exercises to help you understand where you may be weak in what you've just learned - again with real-life documents.
Soup to nuts.
Now, having said all that, I understand that there is an edition that is introductory in its approach, so that's probably the best thing for the naked babes who fall off the cart as it rolls out of the woods.
Still, this book is EVERYTHING I look for when I need instruction on how to use any of the MS Office products but for one thing . . . why is it so freakin' expensive? I get that it is indeed complete and comprehensive - it's GOOD, but - WHY SO FREAKIN' EXPENSIVE? I borrowed a copy from interlibrary loan and therefore could not renew it, now I'm searching high and low for it again, in order to borrow it, again. It seems that once found, it becomes pretty popular. Oh well. It's on my wish list.
UPDATE 03/02/10. Tried others - not as thorough or instructive as this one. Tax refund came in. Didn't owe anybody. Bought the book. Yes. I broke like a dry twig. But not regrettin' it. What can I say? :DMicrosoft Office Publisher 2007: Complete Concepts and Techniques (Shelly Cashman) Overview
