Each chapter is explained thoroughly enough so that if you are truly a beginner opening Maya for the first time you will easily be able to follow instructions. The terminology used in the book is at a level where all can follow. He touched upon each aspect of Maya with enough detail to give a strong basis of understanding for the program. I especially like where he created a detailed model using primitives and simple modeling tools (i.e. catapult). He succesfully uses the same project to show several different concepts of 3D as you advance through the book.Introducing Maya 5: 3D for Beginners OverviewAlias Wavefront's Maya is the premier tool for 3D modeling, animation, and rendering. It is used by such film houses as Industrial, Light & Magic, Pixar, and Disney for creating 3D animation and special effects. Introducing ZBrush ReviewAs a fellow author, I have bookshelf upon bookshelf of 3D books. Most of these don't get much use. "Introducing ZBrush," however, will get a good workout. Although I've always been impressed by the work produced by ZBrush, I've never been a fan of the interface or workflow and thus have used it relatively little to date. Eric Keller's book makes it all less intimidating. His book covers all the basics, plus includes ample step-by-step guides. The illustrations and example models are a step above many 3D books. I'm also happy to see instructions for importing from and exporting to Maya (ZBrush displacement maps look fantastic in Maya). The DVD includes models, materials, textures, movies, tools, and macros, plus a trial of ZBrush 3. Admittedly, there is a wealth of ZBrush information on the web. However, if you prefer to have a book at your fingertips and would rather not slog through forums for quick answers, this book is a good investment. (If I had a wish, it would be that more of the illustrations were in color, and not black-and-white.)Introducing ZBrush Overview

Mastering Maya 2009 ReviewI've been vigorously studying Motion Graphics related topics for the past few years, and have read literally hundreds of books and taken thousands of hours of online training via Lynda.com. I've managed to get my Adobe certifications in: Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator & Premiere/Encore and currently working on getting certified in After Effects. I am also the author of the Flash exam for examaids. I have been trying to study Maya for the past couple of years and have been extremely frustrated with the level of training anywhere. The best I had found was actually in the help sections of Maya. I realized how complex Maya was, but I was starting to get the feeling no one either could explain it, or understood the depths of it to pass the knowledge on. I found myself unable to get through the "beginners books". That is until I found the "Mastering Maya 2009" book! Finally, someone who understands the product who can share in-depth without skipping steps in the process. I'm so impressed with it, that I'm rating it already as one of the 4 best graphics books of all-time. The other 3 would be the Ben Willmore's Photoshop Studio Techniques, Chris & Trish Meyer's Motion Graphics with After Effects, and Mordy Golding's Real World Illustrator book. Fantastic book! I give it my highest rating and total endorsement!

3ds Max 2011 Bible ReviewThis book can be described as "the ramblings of someone who knows how to use 3dsMax but not how to teach it". It's boring and painful to try and follow along with. Too much talk, not enough action and especially not enough pics/diagrams! For people just beginning with Max, you'll be wasting a lot time reading and then re-reading and then re-re-reading the text trying to work out where to find the command, menu, object etc, that the book's trying to explain or the affects different tasks have on your models whereas simple labelled diagrams and screenshots would've done the job a lot more efficiently.
The book gives some good direction on where to start learning 3dsMax but the Autodesk help is far better at actually explaining things, the Autodesk tutorials are also excellent!
When you finally get to the important chapter on poly modelling, the book really loses the plot, 50 pages describing the 5 million commands all of which are explained in the 3dsMax help file, the book just takes longer to get through. Then the opening sentence of the following chapter says "the previous chapter 'covered' everything you need to know about poly modelling". It probably did, but it taught nothing!
It's too "hands off", the few tutorials which are covered and included on the dvd have too much of the work already done, so you'll complete the tutorial and wonder what the point was? (The DVD includes a heap of tutorial files but hardly any are actually covered in the book.)
It's a big book and i can appreciate the work that's gone into it but it could be condensed right down by cutting out the rambling and getting to the point.
I personally don't see the need for this book as the tutorials and help provided by Autodesk get you up and running WAY quicker with plenty of screenshots to back up what's being said. Unfortunately i had already bought the book and wasted a lot of time going through it before i worked this out.

ZBrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy ReviewThis book is an excellent follow up to all previous zbrush books. Why?, two reasons...One, it refers to zbrush version 3.5 which has some major changes from previous zbrush versions. But the greatest joy is in following the tutorial of a "realistic hero" character. My lady friend always asks me about all other zbrush books..."why do all the characters look ugly?" the answer is simple. It's far easier to create an alien or an ogre. But now Scott Spencer enables us non academically educated artists to create a somewhat life-like character. This is no easy task, but Mr. Spencer enables even a non artist like myself to do so. I no longer have to create aliens and ogres and can actually create a character that is aesthetic to the layperson's eye! BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ZBRUSH IS A MUST! So keep that in mind. But once you understand the zbrush interface and you are comfortable with the basic standard, clay, inflate, and flatten brushes, you will love this book. Hopefully, the next version will be of a "life-like" female superhero.
THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE along with "The Essential" by an author who now advocates mudbox. ZSpheres have come a long way with v.3.5 zspheres2 so he might regret leaving zbrush. BTW...There is no info on zsketching in this new Scott Spencer book, but nevertheless, your skills will grow leaps and bounds as an artist (digital sculpturist) as he does a great job explaining gesture and form as well as detail.ZBrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy Overview
