HTML, XHTML & CSS For Dummies ReviewAs a retired aerospace engineer closing with 70, I must be the quintessential cyberspace "Dummie". Looking for a change from retirement boredom, I decided to write a specialist e-guide on kayaking and river running in Thailand. Of course, I would need a website to carry it. So, I set out to build one and obtained two "Dummies" books on website building. They were very good books, both, full of great info. But they made it very clear that I'd have to have something a little more than a passing acquaintance with the site building code, HTML. I had a bad feeling. It sounded, boring, ominous and turgid, rather like eating breakfast cereal without the milk. But I pressed on and bought one of the books recommended which was "HTML 4 for Dummies" by Ed Tittel and Mary Burmeister, 5th Edition. What a surprise. I may be a computer slowcoach, late to the cyberspace gate, but I am a professional and I do recognize and respect professionalism when meet it. The book was a breeze to follow, well written and superbly structured, with countless tips and links to helpful websites. I read the book through with pleasure and plundered it for instruction as I built my website. Mr. Tittel is a pro. He knows his subject well and, writing with a deft sense of humor, he teaches, guides and instills confidence in the reader. So much confidence that I have decided to build more websites. And who knows, maybe even become a webmaster. I lent my copy to a friend and he feels the same. It now sits torn, dog-eared, taped-up and battle-scarred on my bookshelf.
So when I heard of the latest edition "HTML, XHTML and CSS for Dummies" with Mr. Tittel in collaboration with Jeff Noble I obtained a copy. This book has everything the earlier book had, but more. Expanded, naturally, and with more emphasis on CSS and other relevant advances it's a wonderful book. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. It even packs along a dedicated website! If you're a beginner and want to build a website and want a good grasp of HTML, grab this book. And you'll be glad you did.

Professional Joomla (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThe book content is ok, but too basic. Instead of 50 pages of Examples of "successfull sites", maybe the author could have expanded on some of the examples. For example, the example on MVC patterns is so simple as to be meaningless. If I wanted to "study the Joomla source code" as the author suggests, I wouldn't have spent money on a book.
The downloaded example source code doesn't match the book and often doesn't quite work.
I did learn quite a bit about Joomla, but I always had the nagging feeling that the book wasn't finished and was rushed to print.Professional Joomla (Programmer to Programmer) Overview

Beginning DotNetNuke Skinning and Design (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThe book is OK, there are some useful recommendations. However, the actual information about skin creation takes just a few chapters, and a good deal of the book is about DNN, installing DNN, they even throw in something about Silverlight. Which is useful, but probably not completely in the focus of the title, in my opinion.
Perhaps it would be nice to see more information about skin objects and container objects, with more information on how they look and how they can be configured. Or even discuss the appearence and skinning possibilities of some of the core modules.
The book seems to be targetting half way between developers and designers, and in that attempt may not result as useful as it could, to neither of them (too light for a developer, too technical for a designer). It does say "Programmer to programmer" in the subtitle, so the reader should consider himself warned about it. In any case, it would be nice to see a book like this, but aimed from a designer's perspective.Beginning DotNetNuke Skinning and Design (Programmer to Programmer) Overview

HTML & CSS: The Good Parts (Animal Guide) ReviewThis book gives strategic advice for how to use HTML and CSS. It's not a comprehensive introduction to HTML and CSS; that would take a much larger book. It reminds me of the Effective C++ books by Scott Meyers: advice on how to make good use of the language, not a syntax tutorial. It sometimes explains what to do but not how to do it. In those cases, the book gives links to a companion web site with more details. If you have some experience with HTML and CSS, but feel like you're not using the tools as well as you'd like, this would be a good book to pick up.
I appreciate that the author endorses the spirit of web standards without being a language lawyer. Sometimes you have to make compromises.HTML & CSS: The Good Parts (Animal Guide) Overview

Ajax in Practice ReviewThe back cover says that "Ajax in Practice" is a "second generation" book. The book covers a mix of problem/solution descriptions for common problems, Ajax tips and advanced JavaScript techniques. The cookbook style is useful if you are trying to implement a specific Ajax effect. The book touches on a number of libraries/toolkits where appropriate. It also covers integrating with existing Ajax libraries.
The book assumes you know basic JavaScript, CSS and HTML. If you are new to Ajax, I recommend reading a "first generation" book like "Ajax in Action" first. This book is a lot easier to follow if you have some exposure to Ajax. In particular, the problem/solution style involves learning by reading a lot of code. This is overwhelming on the first shot. I had to pull out my copy of "Ajax in Action" to follow parts of it. While some of the examples are long, they don't include unnecessary code.
I liked that the book has a common flow to it. Even though there are seven authors/contributors, the style is the same and it makes sense. I learned a lot about specific uses of Ajax along with examples/techniques of good Ajax code. This should definitely be the second Ajax book you read!Ajax in Practice Overview
Ajax in Practice provides example-rich coverage of Ajax packed with ready-to-use code and practical recipes for common and not-so-common tasks. Ajax developers now face the move from Ajax-as-theory to Ajax-in-practice. Ajax in Practice guides web developers through the transition from learning about Ajax to successfully applying Ajax-driven techniques in real-world development scenarios.

Ajax gives web developers the potential to create rich user-centered internet applications. But Ajax also adds a new level of complexity and sophistication to those applications. Ajax in Practice tackles Ajax head-on, providing countless hands-on techniques and tons of reusable code to address the specific issues developers face when building Ajax-driven solutions.

After a brief overview of Ajax, this book takes the reader through dozens of working examples, all presented in an easy-to-use cookbook format. Readers will learn how to implement drag-and-drop interfaces and will discover how to create effective nagigation strategies for their applications. Unlike a traditional cookbook, though, Ajax in Practice provides a thorough discussion of each technique presented and shows how the individual components can be connected to create powerful solutions. A fun "mash-up" chapter concludes the book. Throughout Ajax in Practice, the examples chosen are interesting, entertaining, and practical.

How to Build Your Own Web Site With Little or No Money: The Complete Guide for Business and Personal Use (How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful...) ReviewWhat initially struck me about this book is how comprehensive it is. It certainly lives up to the title, providing a wealth of information on how to build a website without spending a lot of money and then how to get traffic to it. Bruce Brown promises that, even if you have never built a website before, the book has more than enough information to help you do this. A novice like me is, therefore, expecting to see step-by-step instructions on how to design, build and publish a website from scratch.
There is indeed a comprehensive HTML tutorial with additional, if brief, information on XTML and a few other coding languages. If you have the time, you should be able to learn html by following the guidance provided. But for those who don't want to take the time to learn HTML, there's a chapter that describes the advantages and drawbacks of software products on the market that will do the HTML coding for you, such as Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Create Suite 3. I would probably opt for these products and not spend time learning html. But they're pretty costly, so your decision is going to be based on your time and budget. Luckily, there's a chapter on free website design tools such as Joomla, Wordpress, and NVu that can be used to build websites.
It made more sense to me to have the chapters on web design fundamentals and web content appear before the coding chapters since you need to have a structure or blueprint in place before you start building the site, but both chapters do a good job of explaining in detail how to structure your site for easy navigation and create content that is search-engine optimized as well as user-friendly. There are also fairly comprehensive chapters on website graphics, web page formats, and electronic shopping carts, giving you just about everything you need to create a fully functional business website.
The rest of the book is devoted to SEO, how to generate traffic, PPC and Google Adsense advertising, affiliate marketing, blogging and social networking. Interviews with several web design experts answering the same questions provide additional tips and strategies. And the book includes real-life examples of how several individuals built their own websites and established successful web-based businesses with them.
I have to admit, I was a little intimidated and overwhelmed by what's required to actually build a website from scratch. There were a lot of terms that I didn't understand and had to look up, but I believe, with this book, some time and patience, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to pull it off.

HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition ReviewAs the title says, this book is for people with very little knowledge of HTML - but knowledge of how to use a computer at an intermediate level. It covers most basic HTML tags, up to and including tables and a limited amount of framesets, as well as providing a large reference section aimed at the beginning HTML coder, becoming a decent reference manual even after the Tutorial section is finished.
It's not the be-all and end-all of coding references, but it's perfect for someone that is comfortable with a computer, and wants to being creating simple web pages. This can take an individual with little knowledge and give them enough information to where they can understand the more complex online references and puzzle out the rest, or to a level where they can successfully invest their time in learning more about CSS, JavaScript, and DHTML to move to more complex sites.HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition Overview

Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual ReviewORIGINAL REVIEW:
I can't tell you how many books I've trudged through to "learn" innumerable new applications only to find out that the book or the tutorial CD has errors. I never knew if I was making the mistake, or if the book was wrong. It was incredibly frustrating to spend $50 on a book, only to find that it was useless because you couldn't depend on anything in the book but the page numbers.
FINALLY someone takes the time -- and has enough respect for his audience -- to get it right. I own 3 Dreamweaver CS3 books and this is, by far, the best, most comprehensive and most error-free. In fact, I haven't found a single error yet -- and, believe me, I've looked.
The great thing about this book is that all of the tutorials are online. So there's no CD to lose or scratch. You can download the tutorials as many times as you want, no password needed.
There are just enough tutorials in this book to give me the information I need, but not so many that it becomes a rote "how-to" book. There's real information here combined with real-world applications in the form of tutorials. I'm actually in the middle of one right now and I'm so impressed with this book, I just had to stop and write a review for it!
If you want to learn Dreamweaver CS3 -- and learn it RIGHT THE FIRST TIME -- buy this book. Or steal it. Just get it.
REVISED: After making my way through this book in its entirety, I did discover some fairly significant errors. McFarland does post some of the corrections on his website, but he also moved the website and it's a little difficult to find. All-in-all this is still the best of the books that are out there, but its star got a little tarneished the farther into the book I got.Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Growing Your Business With Google ReviewI have a far more technical background than the typical target audience, and have read other books on Google in the past (though all from the usage perspective). I can recite Google search options off the top of my head, and essentially never have problems finding things.

This is critically important for your business website, whether it's a revenue-generating site, or more like an online promotional brochure for your company's products or services.
This book also includes numerous great tips on improving the usefulness your website for your customers and potential customers. And even if you don't have a business, this book provides a lot of great information that's equally applicable to promoting any website.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques ReviewAdobe Dreamweaver CS3 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques is exactly the book I needed to help me move from Adobe GoLive, which is being phased out, to the similar -- but different enough to be confusing -- Dreamweaver CS3. This book showed what could be accomplished through a clear and detailed hands-on approach to this feature-rich but daunting program.
The book is well structured into 100 brief, informative sections. They are useful individually -- meaning you can look up precisely what you need for a task and get a complete, but not overwhelmingly exhaustive, explanation with step by step instructions. (If it's essential that you know some underlying technique, the author tells you where in the book to find it -- but mostly, what you need is right there.)
The sections are also tied together into a dozen chapters on related techniques, that progress logically from the basics of creating a site to the full range of bells and whistles, from styling to forms to embedding media (Flash, QuickTime, Windows Media) to DW CS3's cool new Spry animation effects. There is an extraordinary amount of useful information presented in just 250 pages, yet the book never feels crammed. However, it could have used a few more illustrations, including ones for completed projects -- although the author purposely leaves it up to the reader to implement the techniques that he explains. I like this approach.
The book is much more illuminating than DW CS3's built-in Help fragments, that constantly send you to yet more -- and more -- references, many times without really telling you how to do something. Here the author has the space to provide both brief context and practical instructions. This book is also a lot more useful than the overpriced Adobe Classroom in a Book (CiB) that focuses on about a dozen large-scale "representative" projects -- if you're lucky, somewhere in the countless steps is the small piece of info you need to get a specific job done. By contrast, this book is the best of both worlds: more detailed and practical than the built-in Help and much more accessible than CiB. Goldilocks would love this book, since it's not too small, and not too big -- it's just right. I also appreciate that, for all of its conciseness, the writing has a friendly 'can do' quality.
The main content is clearly separated from the subsidiary information presented in sidebars. This 'bonus information' often explains why it's best to do something a certain way (often to increase the accessibility of Web pages for people who are visually impaired, or who simply turn off images for faster browsing). The only major topic missing is how to connect a DW site to a database, which with all the flavors (ASP, Cold Fusion, many more) would require a separate guide of this length.
The book wisely devotes many sections to the features that are brand new in DW CS3, including a strong focus on CSS-based layouts. The Internet has adopted 'best practices' standards -- meaning CSS-based pages -- so the author focuses both on how to use Adobe's nice built-in templates (both basic and styled versions), and on how to create your own from scratch. The clunky table-based, or frames-based (UGH!), layouts many of us have been using are going, going, soon to be gone. That's why the focus here is on CSS layouts, which offer much greater design flexibility and control, and faster loading times (they take far less code than their table-based ancestors, e.g., instead of specifying a bunch of different fonts, over and over, with CSS you do it just once in a master Style Sheet). In stumbling through DW CS3, before getting this book, the single most confusing thing was "div tags" (that basically structure everything in the page layout) -- if only I'd had the brilliantly lucid explanation found here in Section 33 - Defining Div Tags! Now, it all makes sense -- thank you!
Although I think this is a five star book, there are a couple of frequently used items that I wish the author had included in full detail: (1) instructions -- in Section 55 - Formatting Image and Page Styles -- on how to create a 'floated' image with a caption (a border around it would be nice too), and (2) how to "bulletproof" a site, making sure that pages can expand properly if someone increases the font size (as opposed to breaking apart into an incoherent mess). In addition to this book, which for me is a clear top recommendation (I've pored over several of the other 'first out of the gate' DW CS3 guides in a local bookstore), I recommend Dan Cederholm's Bulletproof Web Design: Improving Flexibility and Protecting Against Worst-Case Scenarios With XHTML and CSS. I don't believe that Cederholm's recommendations are proprietary, since they are common sense (once he explains them) and very simple; but they would have made this How-Tos book even more valuable.
I'm still having fun experimenting with techniques -- many involving Spry widgets -- that this book details, that I'll use on future sites. Ah, if only I'd had this book before going the 'trial and error' route, learning DW CS3 while creating the site I recently finished -- I would have cut my work time in half or better. This book provides a wealth of targeted hands-on instruction, including all the basics of CSS layouts, with clarity and a friendly tone.

Microsoft Expression Web 3 In Depth ReviewThis book has been great in helping me design my website! I'm new to all of this and was afraid I would get lost in all the terms and tech stuff I don't understand. Jim did a great job of explaining Expression to me in a clear and simple without talking down to me. After reading this I was able to use CSS in my site and I was even able to use the Asp.net controls to create a login page! I thought the book was organized just right for getting me from the beginning of my site to the more advanced topics. The book has a lot of tips in it that I have found to be great and Jim even warns you about things that might get you in trouble. I was really impressed by the book and I can't recommend it enough.
I have to share one more thing. I had a problem with Expression giving me an error I didn't understand so I emailed Jim using the email address he gives you in the book. I wasn't expecting much since the problem wasn't related to his book. I was really surprised that Jim replied quickly, and he also spent a lot of time with me figuring out what was wrong and helping me fix it. In a world where customer service is pretty much dead, I thought this was very refreshing.

Joomla Bible ReviewThis is far and away the best overview on Joomla, how to deploy a website in Joomla. This is not a book on how to develop in Joomla. The intended audience is someone who will be building Joomla websites, administrating them and doing mild customization in the HTML/CSS arena. Not a book about PHP programming or Joomla's MVC architecture (shame to even use that term, as Joomla MVC is horrific!).
Joomla is a great product for the right audience and this book is perfect for them!Joomla Bible Overview

Web Design: A Beginner's Guide Second Edition ReviewWendy Willard's credentials indicated a degree from Art Center College of Design. That was one of the reasons I bought this book as I wanted advice from one of the "creatives" about how to go about designing an interesting web site. Although I have 30+ years of experience in IT and hi-tech, being stared in the face with the reality of: "just how do you produce a compelling web site in 60-days? --with no experience?"..... that had me really intimidated. The book exceeded my expectations; it is well thought-out, practical, personal and walks the reader methodically through the entire cycle of Planning-->Designing-->Coding-->Going Live. It not only addresses the aesthetic considerations, but is full of do's & don'ts (from practical experience) regarding design considerations affecting performance and visual presentation. The author provides many screen shots from sites under discussion, and the text is loaded with links to sites that provides supplementary information. Well worth the price.Web Design: A Beginner's Guide Second Edition Overview

FrontPage 2003 (The Missing Manual) ReviewThe thing I like most about "FrontPage 2003 : The Missing Manual" by Jessica Mantaro is how well this book is laid out. There are many times when a book is not intelligently planned out ahead of time and you are dealt with the obstacle of having to search chapter through chapter to find what you are looking for. Upon opening this book you will immediately find this to not be the case. Separated into 18 chapters with a helpful index at the end, this book covers all the important topics:
01. Creating a basic web site
02. Adding and editing text
03. Working with Hyperlinks
04. Image manipulation and insertion
05. Creating tables
06. Using frames
07. How Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is used
08. Using layers
09. Learning DHTML
10. Learning about site structure
11. Using themes and templates
12. How to test your site
13. Publishing your site for the world to see
14. Collaboration tools available
15. Using forms in your site
16. Working with databases
17. Communicating with a database
18. Integrating FrontPage with other Office apps
Simply stated, this is a fantastic reference manual for anyone that needs to learn FrontPage 2003 or wants to get more out of this application that has made so much progress the last couple of versions. FrontPage used to be a basic, clunky app that wasn't the best tool around, but of all the 2003 Microsoft Office updates, this application is probably the one most worthy of an upgrade. The new version of FP truly shines over the rest and it will be a helpful companion by your side while you are working on your corporate or personal web site.
A fantastic manual for learning and/or reference that truly should have been in the box. Expertly written by an experienced technical writer who brings her years of experience to the table, making it easy for the everyday John/Jane Doe to become a FrontPage 2003 pro!!

Web Application Design Handbook: Best Practices for Web-Based Software (Interactive Technologies) ReviewI bought this book because Krug's book (Don't Make Me Think) recommended it and because my main concern was web-based business applications not public web sites.
I was extremely disappointed by Web Application Design Handbook:
1) It doesn't say much more than what any Windows developer has known
for the past 10 years
2) It is full of discussions about software DEVELOPMENT but it is
supposed to be a DESIGN book
3) It is supposed to be a book about WEB design but half of it is
about reports, graphs, diagrams, and maps
The first half of the book concentrates on what was advertised: design/usability of web-based applications. But it doesn't offer many new ideas. Most of the recommendations are well-known to Windows developers. It doesn't give enough attention to what's different about web-based applications.
The amount of useful, thought-provoking information in this book that could help a Windows developer create better web-based applications is no more than 50 pages. Not very good for a book of 600 pages.
The book does not inspire confidence that the recommendations are based on real usability testing. There's a lot of conventional wisdom followed by a lot of suggestions to figure it out yourself with your own usability tests.
The book has a maddening tendency to slip into development issues. Why on earth are there JavaScript code examples in a design book???!!! Why are there discussions about the impact of client vs server-side code on network bandwidth? Not only are these discussions distracting, they are also full of half-truths, oversimplifications, obsolete information, and some outright mistakes.
Almost 2/3 of the book is about topics that are beyond the scope of web application design (ok they're at least straining the limits): reports, graphs, diagrams, maps. That material would be handled better in a separate book, dedicated to those topics. As it is, most of the book is irrelevant to my needs.
If you are concerned with usability/GUI design of web sites or web applications forget this book and get Krug's Don't Make Me Think instead.

Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (English and English Edition) ReviewThis is the most complete all-in-one manual on website development I have ever read. I was amazed on the amount of information covered in this book, it is almost overwhelming. But, if you stick it out, the end result will be a thorough foundation on website development, community building and, if you wanted to, use your new found knowledge and skills to make money on the web. This book is written, like the title states, in a manual-like style, mixed with step-by-step solutions, simple examples and detailed explanations. And If that wasn't enough already, in the appendix there is a HTML5 reference, and a bunch of website links, grouped by chapters to further extend your knowledge in each subject. I found this book easy to read and understand which is one of the main reasons why I liked it so much. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to start a career in web design or development as it will give them a rock-solid foundation on how things work and fit all together. I would also recommend this book to small business owners, or marketing managers as it will give them a complete understanding of the whole development process so they can intelligently discuss their next web project with prospective designers without their eyes glazing over from lack of knowledge. Finally, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone else, who, maybe just wants to start a blog, or make a webpage, or learn how to use stylesheets or javascript in an already existing website -- this is the book for you because you will accomplish that in just a chapter or two and come out ahead with a great reference manual to boot.Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (English and English Edition) Overview

Microsoft Expression Web 4 In Depth ReviewThis is EXACTLY the book I wanted.
I'd bought the Expression Web4 program and was really struggling to learn to use it properly by myself. It's a complex full-featured program with a lot to know. I've only had this book for a few days, but it's already more than justified its cost by demystifying heaps of things about how EW works. I've already learned a whole lot of things I hadn't understood, plus a number of incredibly useful, quick and nifty (not to mention efficient!) ways of doing things that I'd been going about the looooonnng way around.
I very much like the way it's laid out, and Jim writes very clearly and explains well. Heaps of helpful examples. I do recommend registering the book with informit, so you get access to a full PDF copy of the book in colour (which helps illustrate even better how some of Expression Web works, highlighting tags, etc) plus codes, and more to use with the book.
I disagree entirely that this book is 'not for beginners', though I guess it depends on what one means by a 'beginner'. I was very definitely a beginner with Expression Web (still am, but rapidly improving). Though I'd hunted around and found some helpful videos etc on the web, and tried to drive it, I still considered myself very much a beginner, which is why I needed a good book. I understanding HTML tags, am reasonably literate with them, and have some understanding of CSS. I've used Front Page, though EW is not even in the same ball park, and in many ways, having used it really doesn't help with EW. I know about designing and structuring websites. If everything I've listed was also complete and utter mystery, that would be a very steep learning curve, but it wasn't, though I also think he's done a nice job explaining quite a lot of these topics also.
What I needed was something good to teach me how to use THIS program, both the basics (many of which I thought I was probably missing - and I was right!) as well as some of the more advanced features when I'm ready for them. And preferably not by a long-winded and tedious step-by-step, monkey-see, monkey-do rote learning method, which I find irritating. Jim's book is right on the money for me, and the cross-referencing and structure enables me to jump around and find the bits that I need. He's also in favour of learning by doing, so there's plenty of nifty little examples to illustrate what he means. Terrific. I'm very happy with this book.Microsoft Expression Web 4 In Depth OverviewThe ultimate guide to creating and managing websites using Microsoft Expression Web 4. Website Optimization: Speed, Search Engine & Conversion Rate Secrets ReviewThe first line of the preface to this book reads, "We've had a website for years now, but it hardly pays for itself." This book aims to solve the mysteries that many site owners feel about the performance of their website. Some owners don't know any better, some don't know where to start, and still others rely on false metrics to make their site seem as though it is doing better than it actually is. This book doesn't contain myths. This book doesn't contain "feel-good" stats about websites. This book contains in-depth information related to every aspect of your website, and how you can turn your website into something that works for you and, ultimately, achieves the goals you set in the beginning. This may be a financial goal and your website is responsible for driving sales. This may be a social networking goal, where you want to nurture a growing community. This may be an advertising goal, where you can optimize your site for advertising campaigns. The core of this book will help you, no matter what the goal of your website. Andy King has done an incredible job of thoroughly covering the areas of performance, optimizing these areas, and then properly analyzing the results.
This book is divided up into two parts: Search Engine Marketing Optimization and Web Performance Optimization.
SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING OPTIMIZATION
Natural Search Engine Optimization
Anyone who has ever been in charge of optimizing a website for search engines can attest to the many challenges they may be presented with. These challenges are, often times, unique to any given project. Andy starts off the book by introducing natural, or organic SEO. He explains the benefits, shows some of the core SEO techniques, and wraps it up into a very thorough ten step process to achieve higher search engine rankings. He covers many aspects such as using a professional design, the pitfalls of Flash, and lists out some of the barriers to SEO. I personally liked that he took the time out to explain what a professional design looks like. He introduces the concept here, and then goes into more depth in a later chapter. I have always seen this as one of the most important aspects to your SEO campaign. Having a solid look, feel, structure, and organization will ultimately help both humans and bots find your important content. I also liked the fact that he had a nice section devoted to Microformats while explaining the benefits of Meta Data.
Natural SEO Case Study: [...]
So how do we know what he says is true or even works? The next chapter dives into a case study. Enough talking about what works, let's see some real world examples. This specific example, [...], took a site that was not professionally designed, and turned it around into something much more meaningful. While the copywriting was re-organized, much of the re-structuring took place in the markup. By employing quality markup, he was able to achieve better results, as things were all put into context. He makes brief mention of using the Lynx test to make sure things make sense. Strip your styles away. Strip your behavior away. Does the content make sense at the core? By re-working the core structure and copy-writing, they were able to see much better organic SEO results than the first iteration. This is just the first step.
Pay-per-Click Optimization
What we have seen in the previous chapters were methods and techniques of natural, or organic, SEO. These techniques revolved around the things that could be instantly done without putting money towards any campaigns. Organic SEO was about setting a good solid foundation for your website. Now that we have that solid foundation, we can look to setting up a pay-per-click campaign. PPC advertising revolves around setting appropriate goals, and targeting the right keywords for the right audience. I found this chapter to be one of the most important chapters in the entire book. I read through it twice. He breaks down setting up PPC campaigns, and then monitoring their health. He has things broken down to their mathematical equations to let you truly gauge your campaign. He mentions many helpful resources and tools for selecting your campaigns, A/B testing your campaigns, and then making sense of the results. He also mentions some of the struggles you will ultimately face while trying to manage a campaign, and some things you can do to alleviate the pain.
PPC SEO Case Study: [...]
Again, instead of just talking about what you could or should do, Andy presents us with another Case Study to put his words into action. Here was the kicker for me: This case study wasn't all about the success of the campaign. He presented the campaign, setup the pricing, and then dove into integration. However, this was for items that were in a very competitive market. While improvements were seen, they didn't always come easy. The end of this case study was not a magical story of success, but a story of planting a seed and nurturing your campaigns - even in a competitive market.
Conversion Rate Optimization
At first glance one might confuse this with PPC Optimization. Andy defines CRO as
[...] the art and science of persuading your site visitors to take actions that benefit you, by making a purchase, offering a donation, or committing to some positive future action.
This chapter presents us with the social aspect of being on the web. We started with a core foundation, and moved to setting up campaigns based on our keywords and target market, now we look to converting the visitors into users of our site. This involves an array of tactics that revolve around the Psychology of Persuasion. This psychology is broken down into many useful strategies and topics. Next up he provides us with an exhaustive list of factors to maximize your conversion rates. Each of the 10 factors he mentions are discussed in great detail. He wraps the chapter up with important advice to Test Everything. All of the lists, and understanding how users make decisions, are useless unless you can test against them and make sure you are still achieving your goals. He shows how to test each aspect by using your analytics, but ultimately each scenario will be different based on the needs.
You have just finished the first half of the book, and you studiously implement the suggested plans and techniques. You find out they were successful and brought loads of traffic to your website, only to have your website crumble under the load. Now it's time to shift gears to a more technical aspect to find out how we can optimize our Markup, our CSS, our JavaScript and Ajax, and our Server.
WEB PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION
The two-fold nature of this book may turn certain people on or off, but all of this comes under the umbrella of optimizing your site. I encourage you to read (and possibly re-read) through the different areas, even if they may seem too deep. While the first part of the book was about keeping your visitors happy, this half makes sure your server is happy.
Web Page Optimization
This chapter seems to be a quick overview of what is to come in the next few chapters. He gives a brief introduction into some of the common performance problems that servers can face, and then gives us a list of things we can do to optimize our site for the request and response life-cycle. This list is exhaustive, but many of the items are discussed in more detail in the coming chapters. This is just to get your feet wet and understand some of the common pitfalls. These include items such as optimizing your markup and removing the load of tables, optimizing your images for display on the screen, optimizing your CSS and using things such as CSS sprites to keep your styles lean and re-usable, and optimizing your JavaScript.
CSS Optimization
Some of these items may be commonplace for different developers, but include a good discussion nonetheless. He breaks down the anatomy of a CSS file and the rules inside of them. He advocates the use of a Reset Stylesheet, and then dives into another list of ten things you can do to optimize your CSS. This chapter is about not just taking CSS from a WYSIWYG output, but truly crafting your CSS to fit your needs. It's about making the CSS readable, re-usable, and taking advantage of the Cascade that we have. Simply accepting the output of an editor isn't enough. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: There isn't an editor out there smart enough to understand your cascade and needs. The advantages of crafting your own CSS means that it's more extensible, maintainable, and semantic. You can group items as your needs require, and by using the cascade and CSS2.x and CSS3 selectors you can begin to achieve an array of different effects that would otherwise be achieved through dirtying up the markup (content layer).
Ajax Optimization
Ajax became all of the buzz for a while. Everyone wanted it, but very few fully understood all of the impacts that it had on many outside factors. This chapter starts off listing some of the common problems with Ajax, and then lists out some proper applications of Ajax. Remember, the goal here isn't to just use Ajax for the sake of using Ajax, but to use it tastefully where it will ultimately enhance the user experience without negatively impacting your SEO visibility. This chapter also breaks down a list of many items you can do to optimize your JavaScript while building your Ajax applications. As with CSS, much of this refers to writing the JavaScript yourself (or assessing and relying on one of the many great frameworks out there) and keeping optimization at the forefront. Don't just accept the output from an editor, you can take the extra steps to make sure your JavaScript is performance friendly for the visitor. For small tasks, this...Read more›Website Optimization: Speed, Search Engine & Conversion Rate Secrets OverviewRemember when an optimized website was one that merely didn't take all day to appear?
