InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows ReviewSome of the visual quickstart books are better than the others. This one is one of the best in the whole bunch!
The author really knows her stuff. She covers every important aspect of the program in a fun, easy to read style. The step-by-step lessons are incredibly easy to follow. You don't need any special files to learn the program. Just open the book to any page and learn the specific task you need to know.
The book is organized not just by the program's features, but by the type of projects you'd be working on. For instance, the chapter on Long Documents has all the exercises you'd want for those type of files.
The author also has some very good background stories about working in advertising and design. So you learn not just InDesign, but about things like spot color, preparing files for printing, and working with PDFs.
There are plenty of books that cost twice the price of this one. But you can't find anything as good for this price.InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows Overview

Macromedia Studio 8: Training from the Source ReviewA nice overview of the workflow of Macro/Adobe's well-entrenched, tightly integrated website creation suite; This collection of tutorials is both a good introduction and a decent update to the current versions of Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Flash, without going too deeply into any of those programs (which would be way too much for one book). It's well written, better explained than some books I've read on the subject, with some errors (par for the course with Training From the Source), but nothing too debilitating.
The first half of the book has you designing a site for an organic food provider, creating and optimizing images in Fireworks, incorporating those into Dreamweaver templates, creating page styles (a bit more complex than that would seem), linking pages together, adding interest and interaction in Flash, right up to the point of uploading to publish. With that under your belt, the second half gets more deeply into using Flash as a site creator, though still incorporating DW, delving more into database-driven sites with ColdFusion (not part of Studio 8 but downloadable from Macromedia in a developer's edition); incorporating onsite/offsite work groups with Contribute, and finally preparing the entire package for uploading to a domain. The book takes on the challenge of balancing both a comprehensive and basic real-world-type tour of Studio 8, and pulls it off nicely ..... though definitely allow time for breaks and review.
I found the sections on HTML and ActionScript a bit frustrating, and when a teaching book contains errors it's hard to tell if you're the one doing something wrong; with the current software versions there is no way around some coding and tag orientation, and now that CSS has become such a necessity, we can't expect this toolset to become anything intuitive for some time. Fortunately, with the aforementioned integration, it's at least easier to get a concept of how it all works together, and it's good to see more tutorials appearing that address the workflow of this dedicated web suite and giving us a basic start in just one book.
Again, one star off for proofing (sorry but when a book goes for $45 MSRP it needs to be perfect; MM Press needs beta testers), but better than most from this publisher.Macromedia Studio 8: Training from the Source Overview

Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Bible (CourseSmart) ReviewThis book started out great. After some explanation, it guided me through a simple video editing project in the first chapter that worked and communicated some basic ideas. It got me excited about learning more and then it disappointed me bitterly.
The rest of the book does not teach the way the first chapter does. It does do a systematic and fairly thorough job of explaining things in the interface but the usable examples are few and far between. This works well for some people but not for me. I learn better by doing along with the reading. This guide is woefully inadequate for that. Still, it is a handy reference. It's too bad I will have to further my training elsewhere.

Photoshop CS3 Essential Skills (Photography Essential Skills) ReviewI have read four other books on the new Photoshop CS3 - all of which quickly became too complicated. After all, I want to produce excellent pictures with my Nikon 80D SLR, and am learning Photoshop CS3 from scratch, but other writers seem compelled to include, in books labelled as introductory, the most arcane or esoteric features of this magnificent software. They do so while neglecting basic issues like capturing and enhancing a RAW picture for transmitting across the web.
So I was relieved to find this 430-page book, which begins with "Digital Basics" and waits until P375 to deal with "Posterization" and suchlike. Check Amazon's "Search Inside" feature and look at the Contents. You'll see that this is a book for photographers, as well as professional web designers, for example. It is even more attractively designed than most, and is accompanied by a DVD with loads of useful information (readily accessible in spite of one odd review here). The DVD has more than eight hours of instruction by the authors in subjects ranging in complexity from the use of simple hand tools to montage and special-effects.
The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, and (unlike other books on the subject) contain no glaring errors of fact or syntax. The authors have clearly taken care to avoid careless editing. Photoshop CS5 Bible (Wiley Desktop Editions) ReviewPhotoshop CS5 BibleAs a reference source, this book is very detailed. As a learning source this book lacks substance. Most people who would buy this book are probably an experienced photographer or graphic designer. So it is hard for me to fathom why this book was printed with black and white sample images that are printed so poorly that many are just black squares with no detail remaining.
There is a web site available that allows you to download a subset of the images in color, but whole chapters of images are omitted, including the very complex chapters on 3D graphic editing. Almost no image in these chapters are viewable.
If you buy the Photoshop CS5 Bible, be prepared for a useful but limited reference guide. Or better yet, wait for a more mature book to be made available.

The Adobe Photoshop Layers Book: Harnessing Photoshop's Most Powerful Tool, covers Photoshop CS3 ReviewI added this volume to my rapidly growing photoshop library in order to learn more about layers, which is indeed a very powerful and most useful weapon in the photoshop arsenal.
And there is a lot of very useful information in here, which I reckon is both the blessing and the curse of this book. After reading this book, you will definitely understand layers. However, there is a lot of text and, as a reviewer before me pointed out, not that many pictures, which to my mind, is not a very good combination. The text can be a bit hard to follow without any prior understanding of photoshop I should imagine. I was certainly glad, that I had already purchased and read other books before this one.
I'm not a big fan of the Scott Kelby approach to photography or photo editing. I think he oversimplifies the learning process in a way that makes you learn some of the hows but none of the whys. This book takes the exact opposite of Kelby's approach and loads everything you could possibly want to know about photoshop layers in your lap. This does make the book a bit heavy. You need to concentrate while using this book and you probably need to go over some of the things a couple of times.
So in conclusion I'll say, that this book is very good and very thorough, but does need an effort to go through. Real World Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications ReviewWhen I picked up Claudia McCue's book on print production, it was with the intent of becoming a bit more knowledgeable about pre-flight requirements on my print designs. I had no idea that her book would be so in-depth and that I would be entertained along the way. McCue's writing style is completely readable. Believe me, I was prepared to prop my eyelids open in order to get through a book on print production requirements. So I was pleasantly surprised to find Claudia McCue's Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications such an enjoyable read.
The book begins with a history of printing, to help us understand current terminology and techniques (and to appreciate advances in modern printing technology!) then leads us into a tour of a contemporary print shop. McCue makes certain that we are well prepared for our journey into the printing world by starting us off with all the necessary printing jargon. She next explains what is needed in color versus black and white printing, complications that might arise with various print papers and how to deal with them, and design preparation for binding. She discusses the use of fonts, using pcs or macs and their communication limitations. A much appreciated chapter (for both printers and designers alike) is on planning for printing, or submitting the job to a printer. In this chapter she points out the necessity of planning ahead to increase productivity and limit avoidable aggravations.
A major key point to this book are the chapters specific to the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Applications-Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. McCue refers to these chapters as "Production Tips" which really, truly are worth their weight in gold. In fact, this book could easily have been alternately named "How to be Smarter, Make Your Boss Smile More & Save Yourself Many Hours of Brain-Wrenching Headaches".
I can't remember the last time I crawled into bed with a warm cup of tea and a print production book to do a little late-night reading, and well, that's because it might have been never, until I opened this one. Just a few of her topic headings that have had me grinning include "Forensic Tools", found toward the end of the book, which discusses how to scope out mistakes in InDesign pre-print, "Watch Your Language", on naming files appropriately, and "Let it Bleed", explaining InDesign's bleed options.
Claudia McCue has more than twenty years of experience in pre-press, and it really does feel like she has packed all of it into "Real World's Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications". Twenty years flies by fast when you're having fun. Thanks to Claudia I won't be spending that much more time learning these lessons the hard way.Real World Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications Overview

Digital Media Tools ReviewWe've used this text since the 1st edition in ART 250 Intro to Digital Practices at the University at Buffalo. It is simply the best, most comprehensive volume covering all the major applications we use in class. Just the right amount of background theory, coupled with good technical foundations, and exercises sprinkled throughout that students can tackle at their own pace. The 2nd edition did grow long in the tooth, and we tried a couple other texts, but they all fell short -- either too technical or too deep in theory. The authors are very receptive to feedback, and they were able to convince the publishers that a 3rd Edition was needed. It is the best edition yet.Digital Media Tools Overview
