Access 2003 Personal Trainer (Personal Trainer (O'Reilly)) ReviewMany typical power users tend to use Excel as a psuedo-database because Access is perceived to be much more difficult. O'Reilly's new book Access 2003 Personal Trainer by CustomGuide helps address that complexity.
Chapter List: The Fundamentals; Creating and Working with a Database; Finding, Filtering, and Formatting Data; Working with Tables and Fields; Creating Relational Databases; Working with Queries; Working with Forms; Working with Reports; Formatting Forms and Reports; Working with Macros; Advanced Topics; Index
The Personal Trainer series uses a comic book-style "superhero" motif as the overall theme. But even though the cover doesn't look all that serious, the content is very well done. Once you're into the chapters, the only hint at the theme is a cartoon face attached to a dialog bubble for the Quick Reference material. So if you're thinking the book isn't serious or doesn't have solid writing, give it a second glance. Each chapter is a series of lessons with objectives and a number of tasks. At the end, you get a lesson summary, a quiz to test your comprehension, and some homework to stretch your newly-obtained skills. And best of all, there's a CD in the book that has Access simulation software so you can do the training without necessarily having the full Access 2003 package installed wherever you're at. Definitely a big plus...
I personally thought the writer(s) did a great job of managing the balance between theory and practical knowledge. It's easy when you're an IT professional to get bogged down in all the relational database terms and concepts, whether something's in 2nd or 3rd normal form, and so forth. This book isn't going to make you ready to design the FBI's latest crime database (or maybe it will, since the professionals didn't do such a hot job either), but it will give you enough knowledge to catalog your wine cellar or track the books you've read. On top of that, you'll be able to build forms for data entry and generate reports to figure out what you've got or what you've done. Basically, this book can take you from information to knowledge.
This is a pretty good title, and one I'd definitely recommend for someone who wants to get some exposure to relational database systems...Access 2003 Personal Trainer (Personal Trainer (O'Reilly)) Overview

Access 2003 Bible ReviewFor the most part this book is very through on teaching you Access, however there is a lot of fluf in some of the instructions it walks you through. For example, everytime it walks you through steps on going to the properties screen of any object it will tell you step by step how to right click, how to scroll down to the properties and then left click on 'properties'. Anyone who needs this level of detail should probably be reading a 'Windows for dummies' book instead.
The actual content of the book has so far been fairly thorough as far as understanding Access. The information regarding database design is more or less satisfactory for getting you started working with access, but for a complete understanding of databases in general it leaves a bit to be desired.
For the Access content of the book I give it a 4/5 but looking at the book as a whole i have to take a whole point away because of the volumes of fluf i have to sift through to get to the meat and potatoes.Access 2003 Bible Overview

Integrated Computer Applications (with Data CD-ROM) ReviewThis is a good book to learn 2007. I was good at 2003 but needed to upgrade my skills. This book is perfect for that. First Look 2007 Microsoft® Office System (Bpg Other) ReviewDon't pick up this book thinking it will teach how to use office 2007. This is more of a large sales brochure for what is new in office 2007.
If you are wondering if you should upgrade your user community, then it could help as it will give you an idea as to what has changed. This is a major release and it will involve some learning by the user base.
There are an ample amount of screen shots to get an idea of the new UI. The book does walk you through some very basic stuff. However, I should say again this is not a "Howto" book.
The "search inside" link above has the contents so I will not list them here. What I found a little useful was the discussion about onenote and office grove as I did not know them.
Each product section has a small interview with the product managers. I found them a little boring and skipped them after I read the first two.
Visio and sharepoint are very lightly mentioned.
Overall, this is an ok overview book but it is not something you will want to give long term shelf space. I am not going to keep the book as I think it's served it's purpose after one reading.First Look 2007 Microsoft® Office System (Bpg Other) Overview

Professional LINQ (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewAlthough it is a bit dry and dictionaryesque at times, kudos to Scott Klein on writing a solid book on LINQ and providing a lot of detail as to the specifics.
However, the editing of the book is absolutely terrible, particularly for one in the Wrox P2P series. There are numerous typos throughout the book, as well as areas where the content is simply wrong. For example, in one area (page 77), he describes a LINQ query as grouping by the last name, then displaying the first and middle names concatenated together, when in reality the code is grouping by the FIRST name and concatenating the middle and last together.
This might sound like I am nit-picking. However, when covering a topic like this where there are new and non-intuitive items (such as method syntax and lambda expressions) being discussed, it is critically important that the description of the example actually matches the example. Considering that the book rarely lists the syntax format itself, mismatches can lead to "learning" incorrect information.
Were the editing better, I would give this a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
Oh, on another note.. Be aware that this book was based on Beta releases.. Things have changed a little bit.Professional LINQ (Programmer to Programmer) OverviewProfessional LINQ introduces experienced programmers and database developers to LINQ database queries in their native VB and C# languages. Some of the topics covered include:
LINQ Queries
LINQ and the Standard Query Operators
Programming with XLinq
Querying XML with XLinq
Mixing XML and other data models
DLinq and Queries
LINQ over datasets
Interoperating with ADO.NET
LINQ and ASP.NET

Microsoft Access 2002 Bible Gold Edition ReviewThe authors, editor(s) and publisher(s) should be ashamed of themselves.
They have managed to create a 1500 page book that is equally useless for beginners (including total newbies), intertmediate and advanced users.
Beginners: You'll pick up alot more just playing around with Access and reading the built-in or online help. (even if you have never used a database before).
Intermediate-Advanced users: You'll never find an answer to any of your questions.
I own over 30 computer books, both of a scientific and how-to nature. I have a degree in computer science. In other words, I am not new to computer books. This one though is simply horrible (I'd even say the worst I've ever read, and I've read "Computer Systems Design And Architecture" by Vincent Heuring)
The book is simply a BAD copy of the built-in help.
It has no substance.
It has no personality.
It has no structure.
It explains in too much detail the things that are obvious, and just mentions by name the things that are important.
It's main focus is how to make your datatabes look pretty on the screen.
All the authors accomplish in the 1500+ pages that is book offers, is prove that they are [not] experts on the subject.
Don't buy it.Microsoft Access 2002 Bible Gold Edition Overview

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Brief (New Perspectives (Thomson Course Technology)) ReviewI have just started an independent study course at my local technical college. This will be my second textbook from New Prospectives that I have used. The first was for Microsoft Word 2007. I am one of many people who have lost there job in the past year. I decided it was time to improve my computer skills and these textbooks were very easy to understand and learn from. The assignments at the end of the chapters were interesting and the instructions easy to follow. I would recommend them to anyone who needs to learn any of the Microsoft programs.

Using Microsoft Access 2010 ReviewI am an advanced MS Access user/programmer, so while this book turned out not to be useful for me, I am well qualified to review it for what it is - a solid book for people new to Access and relational databases in general.
The book covers all the bases and even discusses normalization, which is a method of optimizing the structure/layout of your tables for maximum efficiency. Believe me, I have seen rather large homegrown database applications built in Access that used a single table. That's a very poor practice for large applications. My point is that as you would expect, this book covers all the essentials in each area - enough to get your feet wet and then some. It also paves the way for more advanced studies in Access.
I have many books on Access and Allison Balter's advanced books are the ones I turn to more often than not. The quality work that she does is evident here, although as I said, it is for beginners.
There is a free web version of the book that supplements your learning with video and audio material.
If you're new to databases and you've decided to use Access 2010 - this is a good place to start.Using Microsoft Access 2010 Overview

Microsoft Office Access 2007 QuickSteps ReviewThis book is useless. I thought I buiy it to quickly learn some basic Access skills to keep me going. The Author doesn't provide any material entering in data they expect you to have data already set and they skipp through alot of things. I know it's a Quickstep which is why they probably skipped through on showing how to enter in table and create a table but it makes it confusing. The whole purpose is entering in correct data correctly so you don't have problems when relating a table one to another. I had so many problems with this book and I finally gave up I'm going to look for another book.Microsoft Office Access 2007 QuickSteps Overview

Access Forms & Reports For Dummies ReviewFirst, it is important to realize what this book is not. It is not a complete Access reference book. It will not teach you database theory and all aspects of data normalization. It does not cover advanced techniques such as VBA programming, the ADO object model or using the Windows API.
So what do you get from this book? A fantastic introduction to developing forms, reports and queries. In the tradition of the Dummies series, the author gently guides the novice towards building expertise in this narrow but all important aspect of Microsoft Access. With a conversational style, each step in creating a report, form or query is clearly explained. Also, the reasons for creating a report or form, and the differences between the two are presented. Although the title doesn't mention queries, because they are integral to producing reports and forms, several chapters deal with queries. Finally, two chapters discuss enhancing queries with SQL and troubleshooting those queries when things go wrong.
In summary, by spending a few days with the author, via this book, a beginning Access programmer can quickly become adept at designing forms and generating reports.Access Forms & Reports For Dummies Overview

Microsoft Access 2002 for Dummies ReviewEvery time Microsoft upgrades Access, I upgrade my Dummies reference.
I started out with Access 2.0, never having used a database; Dummies for 2.0 taught me how to work inside the complex world of queries and reports that they used at that job site.
When I changed jobs, I had Access 97 on my desktop, and my job description was to automate all the functions of the facilties and telecomm departments using it. I bought Dummies for 97, and built and deployed the seven interlinked department databases that they're STILL using at my old company to run those departmental functions.
At my new job, once again, I'm automating all the office functions, only this time I'm setting up to capture data off the web, learning data access pages, etc. We have 2002 here.
It doesn't matter how complicated a problem it is, I can always find how to START solving it somewhere in the simple language of Access for Dummies. And since I'm also teaching other people to work from the ground up in Access, Dummies is an invaluable resource for them to sit down and read, in clear, simple language, how this beast is supposed to work.
I'd give this SIX starts if I could!Microsoft Access 2002 for Dummies Overview

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2007, First Course, Windows XP Edition (New Perspectives Series) ReviewI myself am fairly computer literate; I am after all a computer repair tech. I also work in my local college with people that are having difficulty with computers in general. I get to see this book often.
This is a good book since it covers all the basics of the world of Microsoft Office 2007, it goes over word, excel and PowerPoint nicely.
This book also has major issues with its wording, for the college student that grew up surrounded with computers it was not that bad. However for the older, say 40+ group it is a terrible book. Directions are hard to follow and understand. I have seen students come to me needing help with some of the work the book asks them to do and I have difficulty following and understand the instructions and I have been in the computer and electronics field since 1982.
Another MAJOR FLAW with this book is that it often asks you to work on a partly started document that you can download off line. Most of the time I spend with a student trying to help them with this book often requires me to spend the first 45 minutes trying to find the file. The web site is so intent in trying to sell you the book they didn't consider if someone who owns the book is trying to get access to the data there told to. It would be better if this book came with a CD with all the data on it.
If you're an "older" person who is looking to get a book to help with gaining some computer knowledge, this is possibly the worst book you can ever get your hands on. You will find your-self frustrated and unable to do the work with out any outside help. After paying the exuberant price for a "College" book you will most likely find your self eager to either return it or to burn it.
For the college student who is told that this is your textbook, with every homework assignment, give the "Case instructions" a glance and look to see it you understand it before you leave the classroom.New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2007, First Course, Windows XP Edition (New Perspectives Series) Overview

Microsoft Office 2010: Advanced (Shelly Cashman Series) ReviewI first came across Shelly Cashman Series in 1998. I used their MS-ACCESS book for my University Class and instantly became a fan. Key feature of this series is a Project based learning. All their titles that i studied had real life Projects and screen by screen instructions on how to complete Projects and acquire necessary skills.
Microsoft Office 2010. I am currently studying for Microsoft Office Certification; i do have Microsoft Office 2010 for Dummies, Teach Yourself Visually Office 2010 by Kate Shoup and Microsoft Office Word 2010/ Microsoft Office Excel 2010 (QuickSteps Series) by John Cronan. Compared to all these titles this one is way better in all categories.
No other book give you sample data to practice with, but with this one you can download sample data files for practice.
There are three books in this series:
i) Microsoft Office 2010 Introductory
ii) Microsoft Office 2010 Advanced [Book Reviewed here]
iii) Microsoft Office 2010 Post Advanced
I skipped Introductory and bought Advanced one. If you are new to Office i would suggest you start with Introductory.
Post Advanced is not published yet, but i am definitely buying that one too as soon as it is available.
On a price side It costs more than other books, but if you attend an institution for Complete Microsot Office Course you would be looking at few thousands in tuition at least. And i believe it is way better than attending any institution, or you may finish this series and then enroll in an institution.
It is a great investment and skills you will acquire would definitely pay off.
Good Luck and hopefully this review would help you in making your purchasing decision.Microsoft Office 2010: Advanced (Shelly Cashman Series) Overview

Microsoft Office 2010 Inside Out ReviewEd Bott and Carl Siechert make a terrific team providing clear susinct technical writing. This book is no exception.
Having said that, I am gravely disappointed by the publisher's marketing move. All the Inside-Out books published by Microsoft Press (O'Reilly) used to come with a CD containing the full book in electronic form. Honestly, my collection of Inside-Out books gather dust on the shelves, but the searchable electronic copies are on my notebook harddrive whenever and wherever I need them. With THIS book, O'Reilly makes the electronic version of the book available as an online web site - but ONLY after you create an account with O'Reilly's Safari Library. You also get free 'Tips', which is a thinly disguised way to market you for more books. I don't always have fast Internet access, and sometimes such access might cost me as much as I paid for the book. If you want to put a copy of the book on your harddrive - pony up for a subscription - the cost of the book no longer includes local electronic storage rights.
It looks like O'Reilly is following the path blazed by the airlines by unbundling services and charging additional fees. Come on! Charge a fair price for the book and give me the electronic version! As a business traveller I'm waiting for the hotel industry to jump on board this sad trend and put coin operated toilet paper dispensers in their rooms.Microsoft Office 2010 Inside Out Overview

Access 2007 For Dummies ReviewMy spouse volunteered to take on a data collection and manipulation project for a non-profit using Access. Here is her report:
I was familiar with the basics of relational database design, and had used Access to a limited extent about 8 years ago. I had a good understanding of the data and how it would be used, so designing a robust database was pretty straightforward. My limitation was the nuts and bolts mechanics of using Access, especially the new 2007 version. I collected about 5 books on Access 2007 from the library, and this is the one really dove into, and ultimately ended up buying. I would say that if you are using Access 2007 you should be sure to buy a book specific to 2007, not earlier versions.
I really like the format of the book--it is organized into logical sections that are easy to follow. I especially like the way the infomation is presented-- there are plenty of examples with adequate illustrations, but the basic ideas are well explained before the examples, so that I found it easy just to sit down and read it to absorb most of the basic ideas. Then after I had acquired a good overview of, say, forms and their applications, I went back to the examples to try them out on my own data. Many of the other books I used explained the concepts only through the examples, so unless you were actually sitting at the computer following each and every step it was difficult to gather the fundamental concepts.
I think the sections on basic database design concepts would be adequate for those not so familiar with relational databases.
I did find one major omission that is critical enough that I ended up buying another book to supplement this one. I did not find any reference to action queries such as update, append, and delete. These have been really crucial to me as I consolidate date from many different sources, and the lack of info on action queries is glaring! (I'll admit that I didn't read EVERY word of this book, so I guess it is possible that I somehow overlooked it, but I was read the first 250 out of 350 pages pretty carefully.) I ended up buying "The Unofficial Guide to Access 2007" by Jim Keogh to supplement, but I'll warn you even that one has misinformation on the format of update queries...
All in all, though, I found this book to be a great basic introduction--concisely written, in an easily digested style. Very useful.Access 2007 For Dummies Overview
