Hacking Exposed Computer Forensics: Computer Forensics Secrets & Solutions ReviewComing from a system administration background, I found Hacking Exposed Computer Forensics to be very good book.
The book does a good job of filling you in with the background technical details as well as providing practical knowledge you can use on a day to day basis. In addition to serving as an accesible introduction to both the technical and legal sides of computer forensics, the book is a useful reference with many clear, detailed examples.
The computer side of the book offered advice on working with Windows, Linux, and Macintosh systems. I especially appreciated the section on Macs. Having worked primarily with Linux and Windows, I found the Mac details to be extremely interesting.
While I have not had to deal with the legal side of computer forensics, I found the legal sections to be interesting reading.
I would reccomend this book strongly to technical people whether or not they are interested in law enforcement, as it provides a good deal of information useful to system administrators as well as advanced users.Hacking Exposed Computer Forensics: Computer Forensics Secrets & Solutions Overview

Alan Simpson's Windows XP Bible ReviewI picked this book up because I was looking for details on Microsofts "latest and greatest." I have to admit I should have done more research.
This book is probably suitable for someone new to windows(any flavor) and computers.
It is full of basic information and is well written,
however if you have no difficulties maneuvering in previous versions of Windows or consider yourself a poweruser...look elsewhere.Alan Simpson's Windows XP Bible Overview

Macromedia Studio 8 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) ReviewI recently took over the website for the school I'm a network admin at. Being the first website I've ever managed, and the first time I've ever used the Macromedia Studio software, I decided to look for a book to help me when I couldn't figure something out myself. This book does just that. It doesn't get into every little detail on how to do everything, but gives you just the right info you need to get going in the right direction. Access 2003 Bible ReviewFor the most part this book is very through on teaching you Access, however there is a lot of fluf in some of the instructions it walks you through. For example, everytime it walks you through steps on going to the properties screen of any object it will tell you step by step how to right click, how to scroll down to the properties and then left click on 'properties'. Anyone who needs this level of detail should probably be reading a 'Windows for dummies' book instead.
The actual content of the book has so far been fairly thorough as far as understanding Access. The information regarding database design is more or less satisfactory for getting you started working with access, but for a complete understanding of databases in general it leaves a bit to be desired.
For the Access content of the book I give it a 4/5 but looking at the book as a whole i have to take a whole point away because of the volumes of fluf i have to sift through to get to the meat and potatoes.Access 2003 Bible Overview

Dan Gookin's Naked Office ReviewWhen I received my copy of NAKED OFFICE, I was excited to think that I would learn lots of new and different things about Office. I was very disappointed. As someone who has used Word, Excel and PowerPoint for the better part of 20 years, it offered me nothing new. And considering I never use Outlook, there was nothing there for me either.
On the other hand, if you are just beginning to learn these programs, this is a MUCH easier read than the technical manuals that comes with the software package. 561 pages cover everything you could possibly want to know about these four programs. A 24 page Index and a 26 page Content Section give you plenty of options on how to look up things which makes it much easier that trying to find something in the Yellow Pages. The whole book is written in a lighthearted manner which makes it easy to read.
The book is laid out in Parts. Each part covers a particular program - Part 1 - Word, Part 2 - Excel, etc. Inside each part are chapters. The beginning of each chapter describes in an outline form what is found in that chapter so you don't have to hunt through the whole book to find what you want to do. There are graphics showing what the author is talking about and boxes which give great tips. There are even specially marked sections (with a little "Batman" figure!) with even more tips.
For those of you needing a helping hand on Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook, this is the book that will help you achieve your goals. Whether it is creating a manuscript, planning a financial sheet, creating a slide show, keeping track of your daily activities or just simply sending email, Dan Gookin's NAKED OFFICE is the book to read.Dan Gookin's Naked Office Overview"The author's humor and his ability to keep the reader's attention are masterful."—Andy Barkl, Technical Reviewer

Macromedia Studio MX 2004 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies ReviewMacromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.
As I said, with such a breadth of information the book is definately a bargain. However, that advantage is also the book's primary downfall I feel. It says 7 books in one, but if that is true it is SEVEN SHORT BOOKS. Each book is definately not the standard "For Dummies" length. This lends itself to make it 7 abridged-sized books. The adbridgement comes by removing all of the discussion on the more advanced features of the program. Unfortunately the extreme basics are also belabored.
All of that means that the book will be useful to help you get started in Macromedia Studio, but after you have a little more than a few hours of experience in the software suite you will find the book increasingly useless. Because the features which a mildly seasoned user will find difficult to master are not covered, this book is not such a great value if the purchaser already has mild to moderate background experience with MX software.
So with that review in mind take it or leave according to your lot. If you are new to Macromedia Studio MX and want some help for the first month or so getting up and running, this is a great resource. But if you have already pushed through the growing pains of climbing the learning curve, you may want to pass on this one for a more advanced text.Macromedia Studio MX 2004 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies Overview

WordPerfect Office 2002 for Dummies ReviewThis book is absolutely useless if you are trying to learn how to use a spreadsheet. There is an assumption of prior knowledge with most of the attempts to explain how the system works. The Word Perfect section is fair for beginners using the system, but not detailed enough for those who know a little. So, if you are absolutely unknowledgeable about spreadsheets this book will not help you. If you know a little about Word Perfect, this book will not help you understand more than basics, which you probably already know. Guess I'll look around for another book to help me learn spreadsheets, or else take a class.WordPerfect Office 2002 for Dummies Overview

2D Game Building for Teens ReviewI just finished the chapter entitled "Your First Game Project" and it was something of an ordeal. Duggan provides us with a series of game scripts which we are to either type into a text editor or the sample version of Torsion which is included on the book's CD. In at least two instances there are typos in this code which cause the intended effect not to occur. I found this out after a lengthy process of comparing the code I typed in with the code as it was printed in the book. I found them to be identical in every case, thus ruling out "operator error". I gave up on that strategy and decided to try and analyze the code to see if I could find any errors. I am not familiar with Torquescript or with C, but I did manage to find the typos and correct them (this thanks to a rudimentary familiarity with HTML and PHP). I can easily imagine how frustrating this would be for a newbie with zero technical knowledge. I am concerned that in subsequent chapters there will be errors that I will not know how to fix and the book will effectively become useless to me.
Because of these errors, I feel that 2D Game Building for Teens is a failure, and not an effective introduction to the Torque Game Builder. I bought the book in part to help me with evaluating the engine. If I used the book as my only yardstick, I would have moved on by now. Fortunately, the demo of the engine which comes on the CD has tutorials which serve to fill in some of the gaps. I could have easily downloaded this demo from Garage Games and saved myself the 20-odd dollars I spent on the book.2D Game Building for Teens OverviewBring your video game ideas to life with 2D Game Building for Teens! Written for anyone with an interest in creating video games, this book will show you how to use the Torque Game Builder, a simple drag-and-drop game engine, to make your very own games to play and share. Following easy-to- understand techniques and directions, you'll work your way through hands-on tutorials that help you put your new skills to use right away as you build simple to more complex games. Everything you need to build your own 2D game can be found in the book, including an introduction to the Torque Game Builder, how to design game graphics, basic programming and scripting techniques, and more. You'll even find an overview of the game development industry to give you an inside look at what it takes to make games, and information on the history of classic 2D games. Raw Workflow from Capture to Archives: A Complete Digital Photographer's Guide to Raw Imaging ReviewWhen a digital camera takes a picture it saves the information in a digital file. This file may be processed by the camera for easier viewing or use. RAW is the name of the file format for unprocessed data. This RAW file is capable of more manipulation when transferred to a computer than a processed picture, like one in the JPG format. This allows a photographer to make the file look more like his or her vision.
This book offers guidance on using the raw format, starting with set up of the camera for saving a picture in RAW, through processing, to archiving the image. There are several books in print that explain how to use the popular Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) software, which is part of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, for processing RAW files. But ACR is not the only software available for processing RAW files, even if it is the most prominent. Unlike other books, this volume takes a step back and looks at the range of software available for RAW processing including independent software like Capture One, Raw Shooter and Bibble, and camera manufacturers' software like Nikon Capture. The authors also consider related software, like Adobe Bridge and Extensis Portfolio, as well as some new software that takes a different approach to handling RAW files, like Apple's Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom.
Unfortunately, this effort to take the long view has its problems. The authors look at different software packages for RAW processing, and point out the most important features of each, However there is not enough depth to allow readers to make a decision as to which package is best for them. If it is impossible to provide that much information in a book of this length, I would have liked to see the authors provide their comparative conclusions as to which software was most appropriate for photographers with different goals and bents.
The same problem exists with regard to other aspects of the long view. For example the author's note that both Extensis Portfolio and Adobe Bridge have the capability of searching archived files for keywords. But they don't make any comparison that shows the advantages and disadvantages of the two. I conducted an experiment to search one thousand files for a single keyword. With Portfolio the search took less than a second. The same search with Bridge took more than five minutes. Yet, if I were working in Bridge with a small file set, it would be more convenient to search keywords with Bridge than to start Portfolio. While I don't need to see this exact comparison, I would have liked to see a more detailed comparison than was provided.
At the other end of the scale, the authors give far more detailed instruction on the use of ACR than on any other converter. Unfortunately, it's just not quite deep enough. They show you how to manipulate the controls in ACR but leave out many of the fine points. For example, most experts recommend that you not sharpen your pictures in ACR. The authors also tell you this, although they do tell you how to adjust the sharpening slider. But it's easier to use the other controls if the picture is sharpened. ACR has a facility that allows you to view your file as sharpened, without actually applying sharpening. The authors don't mention this.
If you want to learn how to use ACR, for the beginner I recommend Mikkel Aaland's "Photoshop CS2 Raw" and for the more experienced user, Rob Sheppard's "Adobe Camera Raw for Digital Photographers Only". But if you want a broad overview of the entire RAW process, with an introduction to all aspects, including software, I haven't found a book comparable to this.

Official SWiSHmax Bible ReviewI've been using SWiSHmax for at leat a year as a very serviceable alternative to the much more expensive Macromedia Flash. However, I often had to invest a lot of trial-and-error in trying to be more creative and efficient because there was no good reference source for it. The SWiSH forums were helpful, but also fairly time consuming. This long-awaited book solves all of my issues! It's really a great reference -- very well designed, complete, and full of useful step-by-step guidance on doing almost anything with the product. And...it's peppered with tips and techniques (in the form of full chapters!)from some of the top experts in the SWiSH community. It also has a companion site with even more info. I really can't think of any citicism, other that I wish it was even longer than its 700 pages. Nice job, folks!Official SWiSHmax Bible Overview

It's a great book to get started, especially if you need to work off of real examples then the cd-rom files included would really help. Although I wished that this book covered certain subjects in more detail and included more tutorials . . . This book would be good for beginners and maybe even intermediate users could use this as a reference. It gives you a nice balance of Flash animation and web design. Many of us were extremely annoyed that this book (which had been pre-purchased over a year ago), failed to materialize, even after several postponed publication dates by the publisher. Some of us grew so disgusted with the delays, we canceled our pre-orders. I was one of those people. But today, guess what the Book Fairy brought me? To make a long story short, I'd forgotten that months ago, in my zeal, I had pre-ordered this book from two different places to see which would ship it first, and I only remembered to cancel one of those orders. I'm actually very glad I did because in my opinion, this book was worth the wait. Should you buy it? Read on...
First of all, I'm coming at this from the perspective of a repeat customer. I've been a Photoshop user since version 4, and as such, I'm more than familiar with Adobe's aggravating tactic of providing sub-standard user manuals for their products. This, combined with the fact that Photoshop is one of the most complex, unwieldy, and irritatingly wonderful programs on the market makes it necessary for Adobe customers to buy expensive after-market books to learn how to use the software they just paid an arm and a leg for. (Sorry about that preposition; I've got a lot to say and little time.) Over the years, Peachpit books in general have always been among my favorites and the Wow! Series in particular. The folks at Peachpit seem to put a lot of care into their products: the paper is always bright, slick, and of good quality -- which you will really come to appreciate if your eyes are already tired from a long day or you have poor vision and don't need the added hassle of trying to wade through a 500 page tome written in blurry 6 pt Times New Roman like some other books. Peachpit's text is always wonderfully legible and the images are always clean and colorful and well-balanced. The Wow books have the fantastic ability of combining a ton of very dry, but useful information into a colorful, well-organized interface. The Photoshop CS/CS2 Wow book is no exception.
The chapters of this book are organized in such a way that you can start right at the beginning and methodically work your way through, or you can flip through the pages until you find a photo that inspires you and dive right in. Skill level does not matter here: beginners can follow the well-written step by step tutorials and more experienced users can get the gist of the subject just by glancing at the screenshots.
The book starts right off with a bang: What's new in CS/CS2 gives a nice rundown of the changes that were made in the various versions of Photoshop alongside colorful images which show you the features and tool palettes being discussed. The authors have also used a clever technique of separating the features of PSCS from PSCS2 by using a different colored font (typeface for you nit-pickers) throughout the book. You may think this would be distracting, but it actually works quite well - the flow of the text is still maintained and I imagine that it would be quite handy for people who are still on the fence about upgrading to CS2. Browsing through the book for specific examples of CS2 features is really easy because of the different colored text and may help one decide if the upgrade is worth it. Other useful features are the Troubleshooting Tips, which are scattered throughout the book, like the one of page 33 about the History Tool; these tips describe annoying dialogue errors that you may run across while using a particular tool in PS and ways to fix them.
Other excellent features are the "Exercising" and "Anatomy of ..." sections which are more in-depth tutorials that take you deep into the bowels of some of Photoshop's more intimidating tools like Smart Objects and Masks. My personal favorites are the sections titled "Secrets of the Universe Revealed" in which inspirational images from guest artists are dissected layer by layer so that you can see the techniques used and try them on your own images. Chapter 5 is particularly exceptional - if you have only a limited time to learn Photoshop, I'd advise you to work through this chapter first: it is chock full of yummy tutorial goodness. Among my favorites in this chapter are:
p. 320 - Ron Deutschmann demonstrates an invaluable technique for eliminating lens flare that's so simple, you'll kick yourself for not having thought of it yourself. When I think of all the hours I've wasted doing it the hard way...
p. 321 - "Bringing Out Detail" tackles digital noise, chromatic aberration, and the Shadow/Highlight command in one fell swoop.
p. 338 - Shows you one of the better ways to hand tint a photo. (Alternately, you could buy a program like Recolored which does most of the work for you, but hand-tinting using the method described in this book gives superior results, in my opinion).
p. 344 - A wonderful tutorial by co-author Cristen Gillespie on how to change a daytime image into night, complete with dramatically glowing light from windows.
p. 348 - Katrin Eismann contributes two beautifully evocative images and shares her techniques on how they were crafted.
p. 349 - Alexis Deutschmann, a young girl, aptly demonstrates her skills as a photographer and Photoshop user by transforming a pretty, but boring image into a dramatic, gorgeous, and frame-worthy picture. If the sight of a young photographer like Alexis producing quality work like this using just her camera, imagination, and Photoshop doesn't inspire you, then I don't know what will.
p. 352 Loren Haury shows how to combine three separate images utilizing the HDR technique.
p. 354 Christine Zalewski contributes a lovely "botanical portrait" that brings to mind the gorgeous, moody orchid photos in the film 'Adaptation'.
p. 359 Begins a section on painting in Photoshop; nothing much new if you own previous PS Wow books, but very enlightening if you don't, or thought you could only achieve these types of apinterly effects and brush strokes in Corel Painter. I've seen many of these images before in previous versions of the Wow series (which is a shame, since, in my opinion, painting and animation are two of Photoshop's hidden treasures), but the images that are new are top-notch.
With few exceptions, Chapter 7 which covers type and vector graphics, is disappointing. Many of the "F/X" look particularly outdated and old to me. Maybe back in 1998 those neon, metallic, and jellybean-colored text effects looked cool for about five minutes, but nowadays there are so many fresh styles being used, it's hard to keep up with them. If you were hoping for fresh text and logo ideas, look elsewhere. Instead, I recommend you keep a scrap book (or dvd collection) of your favorite, most awe-inspiring stuff. You can grab short clips from movie titling (you know the credits that run at the beginning of the film) or from tv, magazine ads, cd covers, snapshots of cool building signs, etc. Still, if you are new to Photoshop or never really explorer the text and vector features, then this chapter will give you plenty to chew on.
Similarly, Chapters 8, 9, and 10 don't have much to offer advanced users or previous owners of a Photoshop Wow book. If you're big into web design, prepare for disappointment. Website building and animation are given short shrift in this book, which is a shame since, like Photoshop's painting tools, these areas are the unmined gems of Photoshop and not given anywhere near the attention they deserve in most books. Especially now that Adobe own's Flash and Dreamweaver! You'd think at least one chapter would pay homage to the amazing, cutting edge websites that are being produced with these programs and Photoshop. Unfortunately, most of the example webpages look flat, old, and uninteresting - nothing like the dazzling array of sites you'll run across in your average day of surfing - and, strangely enough, there's not a single mention of the word "blog", nor any tutorials on how to compose items for one. This really is a giant oversight on the part of the authors, one that I hope will be amended in future editions. There's a lot going on with the web right now and people are very interested in how to make their own photoblogs, or banners, sigs/avatars for forums or chat clients, podcasts and downloadable content for musicians, etc. What a wasted opportunity. In all fairness, this might be beyond the scope of this book; it is after all, nearly 800 pages of densely packed information. Nonetheless, a few mini-tutorials addressing these subjects would have made for a more complete book.
Pros:
Exceedingly well written: manages to explain complex subjects without resorting to tired attempts at humor nor condescending to the reader.
Well-organized with clear text and sharp images.
Chock-full of both bite-sized and full-sized tutorials.

Outstanding photographic contributions from a wide variety of sources that will both inspire you and teach you how to achieve these fascinating results on your own images.
Huge! Covers nearly every conceivable situation the beginner and intermediate Photoshop user will likely need to tackle at some point.
Companion dvd is loaded with excellent practice images from the lessons, brushes, styles, tools, patterns, gradients and actions.

Cons:
Chapters covering Type and the Web leave a lot to be desired.
Many advanced subjects like scripting, animation, masking, photo retouching and lighting are given short shrift.
Readers hoping for more in-depth information should look elsewhere.

Access Forms & Reports For Dummies ReviewFirst, it is important to realize what this book is not. It is not a complete Access reference book. It will not teach you database theory and all aspects of data normalization. It does not cover advanced techniques such as VBA programming, the ADO object model or using the Windows API.
So what do you get from this book? A fantastic introduction to developing forms, reports and queries. In the tradition of the Dummies series, the author gently guides the novice towards building expertise in this narrow but all important aspect of Microsoft Access. With a conversational style, each step in creating a report, form or query is clearly explained. Also, the reasons for creating a report or form, and the differences between the two are presented. Although the title doesn't mention queries, because they are integral to producing reports and forms, several chapters deal with queries. Finally, two chapters discuss enhancing queries with SQL and troubleshooting those queries when things go wrong.
In summary, by spending a few days with the author, via this book, a beginning Access programmer can quickly become adept at designing forms and generating reports.Access Forms & Reports For Dummies Overview
