Digital Video for Dummies, Third Edition Review"3rd Edition" I would recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a Video Editing Guru. Now there isn't much fame or glory in such a title, and I'm not implying that after reading the book you will be able to instantly break into the "Pro" video editing business either. But it does give you some useful information on how to digitize those video clips and turn them into a respectable home movie or corporate presentation.
The book is very much based on Apple's "iMovie" and Pinnacle's "Studio 8". You'll skip around a bit because of the 2 different programs it explains, but you're really just getting 2 books in one if you ever decide to dabble in the 'other' program. If you're using a video editing program other than these, you may want to pick a different book.
Well organized and "dumb-ed down" enough for the beginner. The projects and included clips on CD Rom keep it interesting. I learned about many tips that I plan to use all the time in my projects now. Good work Underdahl!
Based on what I've seen in this book, I would definitely check out the Adobe Premiere Dummies book by the same author if I decide to move up to that program. I'm confident that I would not be disappointed.Digital Video for Dummies, Third Edition Overview

Instant Boris Effects (Instant Series) ReviewYou can't beat what you get for the price. This book lays out in plain English how to use the Boris interface to do all the things you need to do and more. Many comparable technical books cost twice what this one costs or more and don't deliver any more for your money. Within minutes after looking through this book I had successfully accomplished something I had tried to create four times before with no luck. This book has earned a spot next to my computer.
Now, to reply to the negative (and what I consider unfair) review posted here:
"I pre-ordered this book thinking I could add some advanced graphics to my video projects for school (Vegas 5 and Boris Graffiti) - Boy, was I wrong!"
Indeed, you were. First of all, Graffiti is a titling tool -- you won't get many effects out of it since it only does titles. You need FX or RED to create effects. Secondly, there is an entire section in this book dedicated to using Boris with Vegas 5. Similar material can be found on the Boris website, but if I'm not mistaken, the author of this book is also the author or a contributor of those tips.
Having said that, if you only use Graffiti, this may not be the right book for you. Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop (DV Expert Series) ReviewIt must first be said that Douglas Spotted Eagle obviously understands Vegas, which is the best NLE program for its price. But this book did not live up to the editorial review hype
I purchased this manual hoping for an in-depth Vegas Pro 8 learning experience, but I am somewhat disappointed. Editing mistakes within the book made some parts a bit confusing. And if a working veg file is on the DVD to follow what the book is teaching, use the same image as in the book.. But, the author did do a great job of explaining things that were previously murky to me. (Masking, for example.)
The single most important thing I gleaned is what Douglas Spotted Eagle espouses throughout this manual. EXPERIMENT. Check out every fx - every transition - every filter. Add multiple fx to events - see what happens.
The workshop is advertized as 528 pages, so I figured it would be worth the price. But a chapter touting plug-ins should not have been included. I can get that kind of info by Googling.
By the way, there are many Vegas Pro 8 user "tutorials" posted on YouTube. Vegas Pro 9 Editing Workshop ReviewI bought Vegas 9 from Videoguys in November and it came with zip documentation except the cryptic CD manual that Sony ought not include. I did get a Douglas Spotted Eagle training DVD with the DVD and liked his style and found the information he provided to be of much help, but it didn't go far enough. So I was happy to see this book available.
I am new to video although I've worked with digital audio for years and stills in Producer. Every page of this book has useful information that has brought me up to speed on Vegas. I pretty much know what I want to do with the software, but finding it in the manual is impossible -- such as how do you separate a video and audio track? I spent hours looking for the answer in the documentation; I had it in minutes with the Vegad Pro 9 Workshop.
The only negative is the book does not cover DVD Architect. So I had to spend another $28 here to get that book. I thought the chapters on the DVD included with the book would cover that, but they are chapters that are really outdated and talk about DV and the future of HD and versions 5 and 6 of Vegas. Overall, the DVD resources aren't that great, but the book stands on its own. Highly recommended for novice and pro alike.Vegas Pro 9 Editing Workshop Overview

Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Bible (CourseSmart) ReviewThis book started out great. After some explanation, it guided me through a simple video editing project in the first chapter that worked and communicated some basic ideas. It got me excited about learning more and then it disappointed me bitterly.
The rest of the book does not teach the way the first chapter does. It does do a systematic and fairly thorough job of explaining things in the interface but the usable examples are few and far between. This works well for some people but not for me. I learn better by doing along with the reading. This guide is woefully inadequate for that. Still, it is a handy reference. It's too bad I will have to further my training elsewhere.

Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies with Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 ReviewThe manual that comes with VideoPro x4 describes what each command but does but it does not provide sense of how how all the commands fit together to make a movie. Its a bit like reading a dictionary in an effort to understand literature. The Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies provides that missing insight.
I gave this manual 4 stars because it is written such that it requires the reader to start at page 1 and read each page in order to progress through the subjects. I tend to jump around documentation reading only the sections with which I am unfamiliar. This manual builds a sample movie project that becomes more involved in later chapters.
