Real World Compositing with Adobe Photoshop CS4 ReviewThis is really an instruction manual on how to sell a book with a misleading title and virtually no useful content for a hefty price. I kept waiting for the authors to quit wasting time and actually get to the "Industrial-strength Imaging Techniques" promised on the cover. It never happened. After 200 pages of filler, there are a few actual examples of compositing, but nothing you couldn't readily find online for free. A complete disappointment, especially considering it's published in association with Adobe Press. Some free advice for Adobe Press: before you put your name on it, try passing it by one of your editors, eh?

The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects: Creative Techniques for Photographers, Artists, and Designers ReviewGIMP, or the GNU Image Manipulation Program to give it its proper name, is a graphics-editing program broadly similar to Adobe Photoshop in terms of functionality. The GIMP is an open source program that can be freely downloaded and installed on most computers, including maps. But on the downside it doesn't come with a manual, so figuring out how to use GIMP can be tricky.
But 'The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects' isn't simply a book explaining what all the different tools and features do. Michael Hammel pitches this book quite a bit higher than that, focusing instead on how to use GIMP to perform a variety of useful and common tasks. From trick photography to building graphics for web sites, Hammel leads the reader expertly through nicely illustrated tutorials. The end result is more than simply a better understanding of the program, but a richer appreciation of what the program can be used to do.
There are six chapters, the first of which introduces many of the basic concepts. Although there is some attention given to where the relevant tools are found and how to use them, the focus here is on what they do and why you need them. Fundamental to success with any graphics program is understanding how different tools work when applied together, and Hammel finishes off this chapter with a set of multi-function tutorials that underline this point.
The second chapter concentrates on manipulating photographs. These include softening images, adding motion effects, and creating reflections. In each case the process is taken step-by-step, with clear text and relevant screenshots. At this point it's also worth mentioning something about the layout of the book. No Starch has really done a good job here. The book is wider than it is tall, and each page holds two columns of text. The flexible binding lets the book stay open at any page. As a result, it's an easy book to use alongside the computer.
The next chapter is about creating artwork for web sites. These include things like tiles for web page backgrounds, buttons, tabs, and menu bars. The first tutorial in this batch is all about creating glossy, gel-like buttons of the type Macintosh users will be familiar with. One of the later tutorials looks at the ubiquitous rollover buttons, though from the perspective of creating the actual artwork required rather than the necessary JavaScript or CSS coding. That said, if you use a WYSIWYG web page layout program like Freeway, you probably won't need to manually any of that sort of code to your page anyway; all you need are the graphics.
Like all the other chapters, the web design chapter finishes with a collection of useful tips. Some of these should be required reading for any web designer, and it's great to see the author lay them out fair and square.
The fourth chapter is very unusual but actually makes a lot of sense. It's a chapter devoted to creating advertising. While no substitute for a degree in marketing, there's some great stuff here for anyone who needs to produce things like packaging and posters. Small businesses attracted to GIMP by its low cost will likely find this chapter worth the price of the book alone. On the other hand, some of the tutorials in this section are only incidentally useful for advertising purposes though, and could be just as relevant to anyone creating computer artwork. Again, there's a wrap-up section with a slew of useful tips and tricks.
Chapter five brings text into the mix. This chapter kicks off with some tutorials covering things like neon, metallic, and gel-like text, among other typographic effects.
The last chapter is specifically for software developers, and illustrates the ways in which GIMP can be used to design and prototype application interfaces. While a clever and potentially useful chapter, what was obviously missing from this section of the book was something on designing icons for programs. The book then rounds off with a detailed index.
For $45 this isn't a cheap book, especially when you consider that GIMP itself is free and comes with its own online guides and tutorials. The question is whether having things laid out clearly and logically in a nicely illustrated book justifies the cost. In the opinion of this reviewer at least, the answer is yes. For the GIMP user looking to go beyond simply cropping and resizing digital images, this book is highly recommended. The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects: Creative Techniques for Photographers, Artists, and Designers Overview
The GIMP, an image editor whose power and ease-of-use rivals that of Adobe Photoshop, is one of the world's most popular free software projects. Artists and designers have relied on the GIMP since 1995 to retouch photographs, composite multiple images, and create new artwork from scratch.

The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects shows you how to harness the GIMP's powerful features to produce professional-looking advertisements, impressive photographic effects, as well as logos and text effects. And author Michael J. Hammel, who has used the GIMP since its first public release, won't mince words or waste your time. His extensively illustrated, step-by-step tutorials are perfect for hands-on learning and experimentation. After a crash course in using the GIMP's interface and core tools (such as brushes, patterns, selections, layers, modes, and masks), you'll learn:
Photographic techniques to simulate ripped edges, create sepia-toned antique images, swap colors, produce motion blurs, alter depth of field, and even fix rips in an old photo Web design techniques to create tiled patterns, navigation tabs, rollovers, and fancy buttons and borders Type effects to create depth, perspective shadows, metallic and distressed text, and neon and graffiti lettering Advertising effects to produce movie posters and package designs; simulate clouds, cracks, cloth, and underwater effects; and create specialized lighting Interface design tips for creating textures, navigation bars, and buttons
Whether you're new to the GIMP or you've been playing with this powerful software for years, The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects is sure to teach you some new tricks.

Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for Photographers ReviewI have been a JASC PaintShopPro fan since almost the beginning. I started with PSP4 and graduated to PSP8 where I stalled out when versions 9, 10 and 11 came out too quickly for me to absorb (even though I upgraded to all new versions) -- plus at the time I was very happy with PSP8 for my particular applications. However, I really wanted to get into more sophisticated techniques like advanced selection techniques, use of histograms, advanced layers & masks, etc. Ken McMahon's PSP Photo X2 For Photographers was just what I needed to get me up to speed on the latest version of PSP, plus sharpen my skills in the previously mentioned techniques. Note that this book is rated Intermediate, so it is not for those who are new to basic photo editing techniques. The book is clear, well organized, has lots of good illustrations, and with easy to use index and tabs. It is a pleasure to read and use.

Complete Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Digital Photographers ReviewThis is a very good introduction to Photoshop CS3 for the beginning digital photographer and a useful reference book for the more experienced Photoshop user.
The book is aimed at photographers and not graphic artists, unlike many other PS books. It follows a logical work flow progression, beginning with Adobe Bridge, which is an application included with PS CS3 that can be used to import pictures from a camera and to select and sort them. Next it moves to another part of Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), which allows for untargeted adjustments to the imported files. In Part II, it's on to manipulation in the main body of Photoshop, with emphasis on cropping, tonal adjustments and color correction. (Most of the tools mentioned here are also available in ACR in a similar form and although the bulk of instructions is contained here, it can be applied to ACR, although I wish the tie-in had been a little stronger.) This part then shows how to make local enhancements, sharpen a photo and print it. Part III talks about retouching and Part IV about advanced concepts like special effects and combining images. The first two parts will be sufficient for most photographers to learn how to turn out good prints.
The writing is clear, no-nonsense and almost pedantic but that's not so bad in a book of this type. Occasionally the authors will point out why certain adjustments are appropriate, but mostly the reasons will have to be inferred. For example, they suggest the artistic reasons for cropping, but when it comes to tonality, while they explain how to control it fully, the authors don't emphasize the importance of using the full range of light, or when one might not want to. Readers interested in learning more about the art should look at books like "Photoshop Artistry: For Photographers Using Photoshop CS2 and Beyond (Voices That Matter)" by Barry Hynes or "Outdoor Photographer Landscape and Nature Photography with Photoshop CS2 (Outdoor Photographers)" by Rob Sheppard.
I was impressed by the fact that Smith and Cooper did not follow the almost politically correct line of saying format isn't so important, and unreservedly said that Raw is the best format for most shooting. The book includes a CD with images to work on. New users will find this tutorial approach extremely useful. Less useful were the videos on the disc which don't relate to specific chapters but seem more designed to sell related video instruction. Occasionally some small piece of information that I considered important, like setting the ACR preference for sharpening, was not included.
Unfortunately, the book does not cover the important changes to ACR made by version 4.1. Readers will have to find instruction about the update on-line at places like Jeff Schewe's piece at http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/31/about-camera-raw-41/.
This seems an excellent book for new users to learn Photoshop CS3. (People familiar with Photoshop CS2 can save themselves a little time by reading Ben Willmore's "Adobe Photoshop CS3: Up to Speed".)
Complete Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Digital Photographers OverviewLearn how to get the most out of all the newest features of Photoshop and improve your images with "Complete Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Digital Photographers." This new edition of the book is filled with brand new content that will teach you how to use all of the tools in Photoshop CS4 that are specifically designed for the digital photographer, and which tools are best for each job. The book is organized to help guide you through a logical workflow so you can learn how to edit and enhance your photos in a more efficient manner. You'll find information on how to import and organize your images, how to use the new correction and enhancement tools, how to use the Raw Convertor, the advantages of the new Bridge asset management program, and more. Examples and images accompany each technique to ensure that you understand the material. Perfect for any digital photographer who wants to hone their Photoshop skills, "Complete Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Digital Photographers" reveals the secrets to clearer, sharper, more professional-looking images.

Photoshop CS3 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book (Tim Grey Guides) ReviewI have added this very nice book to my already rich collection of Photoshop books because I was mainly attracted
by the concept of Nature that was missing in my arsenal, and because I wished learning more about the new
features of Photoshop CS3 ( that I've recently bought), such as Adobe Camera Raw, Smart Objects, Quick Selection Tool,
and the new Panorama tool.
Under its very appealing graphic appearance I found all the responses I've expected, every topic being
exposed in a natural and direct way.
I also found very useful the tutorials and the examples on the accompanying CD, as well
as the contents of the Authors' Web Sites.
I recommend this book to everybody willing go deeper into the art if photographic imaging, to the experts as well as the novices
on Photoshop CS3.

Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 ReviewHow many times have you thought you took the perfect picture only to discover that there were flaws in the photo I recently tried out Corel's Paint Shop Pro X2 software which retails for $ 99.99.One disclaimer, I have used the various earlier Paint Shop versions in the past. This software is economical to purchase and fairly easy to use. The learning curve is too not difficult to grasp.
The included Photo X2 printed manual provided is complete, but has no illustrations. Photo editing is very color intensive and in some ways your finished photo is artwork. Fortunately, I had assistance learning Paint Shop Pro X2. Two excellent books are Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Ken McMahon published by Focal Press and Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Diane Koers published by Cengage Learning. These both retail for $29.99 each. Ken McMahon's book is very complete and a great tool for a beginner to intermediate photo edit. Ken's book has numerous graphics and is an easy read and lays out different options a photo editor can implement. Diane Koers book's is 392 Pages and written as a text book for a classroom, it is for more intensive learning and it comes with a sample CD. Both books bring added information to the Pro X2 software and a different point of view on how to use it.
There are multiple things you can do to enhance your photo with Photo X2.
The number one reason is a one step photo fixer which is like taking your photo to a lab. I was somewhat skeptical of this until I used the photo fixer. I tried this option on a group photo, where the lighting was all wrong. There were dark areas and areas with too much ambient light. I clicked on one step photo fixer and corrected the lighting of the photo and the result was spectacular. The other problem I had was the group of people were in a semi-circle in the photo not in a straight line. I used a tool called a perspective tool and adjusted the group to a straight line. I now had the perfect photo with a lot of help from Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.The hardest concept to understand with Photo X2 photo software is the use of layers. The first layer is the background and then additional layers are placed on top of the first. The photo editor has the option to change layers around and make them more transparent or opaque. A good visualization of this is a group of transparent plastic sheets with designs on them. They layers are all stacked on top of one another for a finished photo. A use of this if you want to add text to a photo, another person to the photo or item. The photo editor will allow you move the layers around much like shuffling a deck of cards.
For a Cub Scout function, I needed to print out some special photos. I didn't have a matt for the photos but X2 has a photo frame option which became my matt. The next step I used was adding the names of the Scouts in color. The finished photo was a big hit with the parents and the Scouts. Parents complimented me and asked me how I was able to make the photo.
My last project was one of field expediency. I needed wrapping paper for my wife's Valentine Day gift. I opened X2 and selected a red background for the paper. I typed in Happy Valentines in different font sizes and type faces. I used the picture tube options for added effect. . There are different designs of tubes. I used the flower tube and laid down different flowers on the paper and printed it out. By the way, my wife liked the paper and thought I bought it at the store.
There are more things that X2 can do like coloring black and white photos, removing red eye, scratches in photographs, 3D effects, and painting your own photograph than I have space to write about.
If you are the market for fairly reasonable and easy to use photo software Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is well worth the investment. To get the most out the software I would recommend Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Ken McMahon and Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 by Diane Koers.MAJ (ret) Eric Shuler NJARNGPicture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 Overview

Digital Restoration From Start to Finish: How to repair old and damaged photographs ReviewAt last!, a decent "how-to" book, well written and concise, thank you Ctein.
The How-to's page is very practical if a specific problem arises when in the middle of a restoration project, whether its removing dust and scratches or resurrecting the color in a treasured family photo, Ctein has an answer.
The book will be valuable to the "beginner" or the "seasoned pro" because of its generous scope, from the minor to the major. Some of the major photos that Ctein has resurrected most people would have tossed out as "hopeless".
This book will become my "bible" as I continue the task of salvaging family memories. The plug-ins chapter is very valuable because of Ctein's fair and objective assessment of the current systems he has used and appraised.

Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS4 ReviewFirst off, it is worth noting the organization and intent of this book is very close to that of the edition for CS3 so reviews of the CS3 version may be of use to you even though this newer edition of course contains lots of new material related to the new features of ACR 5.2.
Second, note I said ACR 5.2 above. 5.2 was a bit unusual for Adobe in that it actually introduced some very important new features over 5.1 rather than just new camera profiles. Fortunately publication of this book was held until 5.2 was released so that these new features could be covered here.
Third, one should very much be aware that really only a portion of the book is specifically dedicated to the Camera RAW controls and how to use them (specifically Chapters 4 and 5). The earlier parts of the book mostly focus on RAW shooting and conversion in general and the later parts of the book focus on a work flow using Camera RAW and Bridge. This seems appropriate since discussing the concepts of RAW shooting in general is applicable to Camera RAW and many photographers use Camera RAW primarily because it fits into a Photoshop based workflow so smoothly. That said, do yourself a favor and use the look inside feature on this book to examine the contents and get an understanding of how much of the book is dedicated to these "ancillary" topics! If you already know about RAW and shoot it extensively then chapters 1-3 may be of limited interest to you. If you don't process so many photos that workflow is an issue for you or you already have a workflow that you feel is so mature you don't need any more ideas or input then the later part of the book might not be of interest to you.
With those qualifiers out of the way I can easily give this book five stars. Written by someone "on the inside" of the development of ACR and with a structure that still follows the now departed Bruce Fraser's previous excellent work there is little to find fault with. All of the features of ACR are thoroughly covered and great examples of their use are given. ACR itself has come along way to now being an incredibly full featured converter, perhaps one of the most feature laden in the market, and like other Adobe products benefits greatly from third party documents such as this book.
Again, perhaps my only reservation is that so much of the book is not about ACR itself and not everyone may find the related information useful. That said, it is hard to call this "bonus" material a fault since the information on ACR itself is complete and comprehensive.Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS4 Overview

Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers ReviewI've been using Photoshop Elements 9: The Missing Manual and How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 9 as guides to learning PE9. I purchased this book to complete my Elements library, lured by the appeal to photographers in its title. I've found this book to have some severe short comings compared to the other two books I'm using. Just one example: Dodging and burning are classic techniques used by the darkroom photographer. Elements has digital tools specifically designed for these processes. The only reference to these tools in Elements for Photographers is an indication that they exist in the tool bar. There is no description of how to use them; instead the book describes a very clumsy method for dodging and burning. The Missing Manual devotes three pages to these techniques and tools. The layout of this book is attractive and the workflow suggestions for accomplishing certain tasks are helpful. Overall though there seems to be too much space devoted to topics that could be covered in a few pages [forty-one pages set aside for info regarding sharing pictures on-line and the like?] and not enough space devoted to really mastering the tools in the program. Finally, finding text that read Elements 8 when the it should have read Elements 9 [a case of sloppy editing at best] did not inspire confidence. Overall, this book can't compete with the other PE9 guides I'm using.Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers Overview

PaintShop Photo Pro X3 For Photographers ReviewI already own the PaintShop Photo Pro X2 Ultimate Edition Program. Unlike many other reviewers, I was thrilled with it. I never got so much value in a computer program for so little money. Really!
Look, I'm just an amateur photographer and local photography club member - aspiring to maybe make a few bucks taking pictures. I own a Canon Rebel EOS XSi. Only 12.1 Megapixels (cropped sensor)and five decent lenses. So weigh my opinions against my limited qualifications.
"PhotoShop Photo Pro X3 for Photographers" is useful for learning even X2 as well as the X3 update. For me, it has inspired me to purchase the X3 Program.
I'm not going to detail or rate these new photographic controls. Read the description above.
If you are thinking of purchasing a Photo Editor read this book first. You will find that "PaintShop Photo Pro X3 for Photographers" is a viable substitute for Adobe's "PhotoShop," at least for most amateur photographers. Actually, most amateur photographers might be satisfied with "Picasa," a free download from [...]
If you are rich and/or a successful photographer, then go ahead and spend all that money for everything Adobe has to offer. Coral has a long way to beat Adobe. None the less, I give Coral FIVE STARS for producing a viable alternative at a sensible price. It is so much better than Google's "Picasa" that it isn't worth the comparison. I also give FIVE STARS to this book because it really simplifies using this program and it also reaches back to include the earlier version. Beyond all that, this book will give the reader insight into photo editing in general. Please read this book before you purchase a Photo Editor.
If I have been helpful, say so.PaintShop Photo Pro X3 For Photographers Overview

Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies with Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 ReviewThe manual that comes with VideoPro x4 describes what each command but does but it does not provide sense of how how all the commands fit together to make a movie. Its a bit like reading a dictionary in an effort to understand literature. The Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies provides that missing insight.
I gave this manual 4 stars because it is written such that it requires the reader to start at page 1 and read each page in order to progress through the subjects. I tend to jump around documentation reading only the sections with which I am unfamiliar. This manual builds a sample movie project that becomes more involved in later chapters. My "jump around" approach makes this difficult because it assumes I, the reader, has already built earlier parts of the project.Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies with Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 Overview

Nevertheless this is Elements 9 and not for the totally naive. My big disappoinment was there was no mention of Photoshop Raw that can now exists in full glory inside this Elements program. Apart from a listing in a screen shot on page 329 there is nothing refering to it. My bias is that I find Photoshp Raw a brilliant addition to Elements, dealing with most core issues before I use the full Elements resource.
