Mac OS X Leopard Phrasebook ReviewThis book is good if you know nothing about Unix in MacOS X and you would like to start learning it. It takes you step by step introducing you to the different concepts of Unix and how to use the Command Line Interface (the Terminal.app). However, it seems that the author wasn't sure for what public he was writing, for MacOS X users interested in looking under the hood of their Macs, or Linux and Unix users trying to switch to Apple. Of the two, I imagine the former would benefit the most from reading it. In any case, if you're an experienced Mac user who already has ventured into Unix and the Mac Terminal (which is my case and probably of many Mac users really seeking to get a grasp of Unix), you'll learn relatively little from this brief book. Nonetheless, I don't regret having bought it, since it's helping me to order my learning process and I imagine I'll be able to use it as a quick reference guide in the future.Mac OS X Leopard Phrasebook OverviewMac OS® X Leopard PhrasebookBrian TiemannEssential Code and CommandsMac OS X Leopard Phrasebook gives you the complete command phrases you need to take full advantage of the Leopard's hidden and undocumented power underneath the graphical user interface: time-saving solutions for effectively working with files, folders, the Finder, Spotlight, text files, servers, disks, CDs/DVDs, permissions, printing, applications, Exposé, networking, security, and much more.Concise and AccessibleEasy to carry and easy to use–lets you ditch all those bulky books for one portable pocket guideFlexible and FunctionalPacked with more than 100 complete command phrases–so you can make the most of Mac OS X Leopard in just about any situationBrian Tiemann is a freelance technology columnist and software engineer who has spent more than a decade operating websites on servers running BSD, the technology underlying Mac OS X. CNET Do-It-Yourself Mac Projects: 24 Cool Things You Didn't Know You Could Do ReviewSo you just got a new Mac for Christmas and you're ready to explore some of the cooler things you could do with your new toy? Check out CNET Do-It-Yourself Mac Projects by Joli Ballew and Andrew Shalat. It will take you beyond the regular uses you may normally think of...
Contents:
Part 1 - Easy: Turn Your Mac into a Fax Machine; Turn Your Mac into a Jukebox; Keep a Backup of Your Mac's Hard Drive with Disk Utility; Stream Music Wirelessly Throughout Your Home; Put Your Favorite Photo on a T-Shirt, Apron, or Quilting Square; Fine-Tune Your Music Library; Download Free, Fun, Useful, and Crazy Widgets to Personalize Your Mac; Use Your Mac as an Information Portal with RSS Feeds and Downloadable E-Magazines; Prepare Your Used Mac and Sell It on eBay

Index
If you're a die-hard Mac user, you've probably done a number of these already. But for those who are making the switch from PC to Mac, there's a world of possibilities out there that are just waiting to be explored. Ballew and Shalat have compiled a number of interesting projects you can try out, and the instructions are extremely easy to follow. Each project starts out with a list of what you'll need as well as what it will cost. That certainly beats getting halfway into something, only to find out that you don't have the critical component (and don't want to spend the money for it, either). From there, the work is divided up into a number of discrete steps, such as gather up the hardware, make the connection, install additional software, etc. Each step has a number of substeps that walk you through what's needed to complete everything. Very easy to follow, and even a basic understanding of computers should be enough to get through most of these... You can even head over to the CNET site on-line and see video versions of the same projects. So they have both the "show me" and "tell me" learners covered... :)
A nice gift choice for someone you know who just got a Mac, or for yourself with that check from Aunt Mary...

Using Mac OS X Snow Leopard ReviewThis book gets down to business and leaves out much of the fluff found in many other beginner/intermediate books. As the author states in the Introduction, "Although the book is written for beginner-to-intermediate users. . . I waste no space on basic computer skills and knowledge that most pepole have." This book is all about using Mac OS X Snow Leopard. She stays in that space and covers the topic well. It's obvious that this book was written by a skilled trainer with a lot of courseware writing experience. She assumes the reader is not clueless and that the reader has limited time to get to the point.
The author is a fairly recent Mac convert. That comes through with some interesting comments about how the OS performs and about Apple in general throughout the book. That's something I can identify with very well, which is perhaps a significant reason why I really enjoyed this book and was able to get a lot out of it.
Within the book itself, you'll find shortcuts for both new and old Mac keyboards as well as preferences that are buried several layers deep within the Mac menus. If I'd had this book shortly after I'd purchased my Mac, I'd be even happier to have found out about all these shortcuts and preference settings. Changing tab preferences and keyboard illumination settings on a MacBook were ah-ha moments for me.
If you are a longtime PC/Windows user, one of the most confusing things for you is likely the file system on your Mac and how to find files, downloads, and applications that you have installed. This book explains it well and in terms that make sense. Even the folx at the Apple Store didn't explain it this well when I asked them to go over it for me.
The three sections of the book are well organized. She covers each (Introducing Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Getting Busy, and Having Fun and Getting Creative) with just the right amount of depth to get you through the basics and over the rough spots so that you can make the most of the OS and the included tools/applications. In each instance, I found the material to be correct and easy to understand.
The publisher has provided access to additional material thru the web in this series of books. Beyond the traditional print version, once registered online, you'll have access to a web edition of the book as well. With that, you can treat the we edition as an extended version of Help. There's a plethora of additional online material available after registration including video tutorials (Show Me) and audio sidebars (Tell Me More). These are found throughout the book along with several timely and useful practical exercises (Let Me Try It). For these reasons alone, the book is worth the cost, because you've basically bought an online course at that point.
The one thing that is missing from this book is mention of BootCamp or other methods of dual-booting to a Windows environment. Nor does it discuss operating in a mixed network with Macs and non-Mac machines. This is not a "Mac for Windows users" book, either. So, you won't find the author giving you comparisons about how something might be accomplished in Windows versus OS X Snow Leopard. That's not a bad thing. There are other books out there if you think you need that sort of assistance. This book focuses on how to use the OS and what's included out of the box and it does it in a manner and at a level most of us will appreciate.Using Mac OS X Snow Leopard Overview

OSx86: Creating a Hackintosh ReviewApple has always been very controlling of all its products, dictating where and when it can be installed. With Apple's switch to working with Intel computer chips in 2006, the door was cracked (I don't think you can really say it was `opened') to install its OS X operating system on non-Apple hardware. Thus the hacked Macintosh, or hackintosh, was born. Industrious programmers quickly went to work to try and make this possible - to fool the software to install and work on hardware other than Apple's proprietary computer systems. The results are a variety of tools and methods to make this happen. While all this information is available on the Internet, Baldwin has worked with many of these programmers to pull together a step-by-step guide to creating your own hackintosh. The process is not easy, nor guaranteed to succeed. However, Baldwin tries to lay out the steps, the choices you must make regarding the setup you are trying to build (using an external drive, booting from your Windows hard drive, or creating a new Mac system), and warns of the potential pitfalls and failures. He is straightforward in his warning that this may require multiple attempts and in the end it may not work on your system. But the process is laid out if you want to try. And if you are successful, he helps introduce you to the OS X operating system, especially in translating the Windows convention the user is most likely familiar with into the operations of the Macintosh.
The process has limitations - you are restricted to working with OS X 10.5 (Leopard) instead of the newer 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The truth is that the book, and process, is aimed at the tinkerer and persons who enjoy making software work on a system it is not designed for. If you wanted the latest versions of OS X, or you want to be able to run both Windows and OS X at the same time, you would be better served purchasing a (relatively) inexpensive Mac Mini, which can easily run the Windows operating system with full Apple Support. This is for those who enjoy getting their hands dirty and circumventing the system. Many people wanted to run the Mac software on an inexpensive netbook, though the upcoming iPad makes this less of a need.
The book is very well laid out and easy to follow. The author liberally gives you screen shots, suggested reading, support URLs and healthy dose of reality checks (e.g. wireless networking is going to be a real pain in the process). The sections include very clear step-by-step instructions to guide you through each phase of the process, and give help through the decisions that must be made in the project (what disk to boot from, how to control the booting Operating System). There is very little new here, but this book pulls these steps together into a single, coherent guide and reference. Overall this is a great book for the do-it-yourselfer, as well as a comprehensive guide for the curious.

Learn AppleScript: The Comprehensive Guide to Scripting and Automation on Mac OS X (Learn (Apress)) ReviewOn only about the 5th chapter, and I just thought I'd report that so far this book has only had one complete exercise in I think chapter 3.
Most of the book seems descriptive. He explains all aspects of AppleScript, but you read for pages and pages and he never really seems to connect what he's describing to creating actual practical scripts. He could have put exercises at the end of chapters so that readers could merge theory with practice. It's clear the author knows his subject, but I think the First Head writers would do a better job at making a book like this one of practical use. I really find it annoying when authors explain complex definitions and then sum by saying, "now that you understand so and so." It's like why do you think that just because you have explained something, your readers are supposed to understand it? That's not how learning works. Learning comes through practice, and trail and error. When for example he defines and talks about class and properties, he should have readers do an exercise that helps them understand what he just spent five pages talking about.
Anyway, I'm going to keep reading; if it gets any better, I'll come back and update my review.
If you don't have an prior experience with AppleScript and you're ready to jump into actually doing so, this book is not the best one to begin with. If you do have experience, this might make good reference book.Learn AppleScript: The Comprehensive Guide to Scripting and Automation on Mac OS X (Learn (Apress)) OverviewThis third edition is updated to welcome a whole new generation of Mac users to AppleScript and how they can take control of their Mac. Mac Secrets ReviewIf own or will own a MAC -buy this book.
The "Mac Secrets" title suggests it will give you insider tips for an expert user, but in my opinion this book is far better than that.
It is PERFECT for the new MAC user, and for the potential MAC user, and even the kind-of-experienced MAC user . . . If you use a MAC and still bug friends, colleagues, or IT folks for help sometimes. . .then this is a good book to get!
This book is very readable. It has only a little of the typical Mac Hype and is written in a fresh, clear manner that walks the reader through practical topics like: how to buy a MAC (this was much better than I expected; and I will certainly use his recommended approach when I buy my next Mac), how to set up your MAC and get it going, how to use you MAC, and how to make using it effective and (maybe) even fun.
It even covers some pretty useful pointers for firewalls, security software, passwords, and of the more challenging issues for ITunes, IPhoto and some other programs. I really liked the customization tips and the references or pointers to freeware or shareware that can even make the MAC experience better.
If you are transitioning from Windows/DOS PC systems, this is an especially good book, even though it does not focus on the specific differences. This book's approach is to discuss most of the MAC set up and user options, and in doing so it covers most of the questions or aspects that (we) (former) DOS users would typically ask about --for example how to use keyboard shortcuts, (xwindows) command line options/ alternatives. The book even gives some pretty clear insights on how to figure out and best use the MAC desktop (and therefore, how to configure the MAC desktop). MAC Secrets also had some good tips on where and how to store your files.
Among the many (OK four or five ;-) books I have read on MACs & OS X,this is the single one I would say anyone should treat as the real missing manual! But I would stress that you should buy this book **BEFORE** you buy your MAC, because if you do so I think you'll probably be happier with the MAC you actually buy and how you bought it!
As for my own experience, I was pretty comfortable/informed (?advanced?) Windows /DOS user who has been an on and off MAC user for many years; but I had an opportunity to became a full time MAC user (maybe an "aggressive" MAC user) for just over the past two years. For me this book was a surprise in how much extra or not-so-obvious aspects there are to making your MAC the most comfortable and efficient machine it can be. IF I had had this book two years ago I would have been happier and more efficient in using my MAC much earlier!(MBP15/3.06GHz/8G/1TB)

Apple Automator with AppleScript Bible ReviewPRO: Excellent tutorial and reference for both Automator & AppleScript
CON: I found the figures hard to read and not all were scaled the same
Moose Rating: 5
Review posted at :[...]
The dictionary included as part of the Snow Leopard OS defines the informal meaning of the word "Bible" as any authoritative book. I would agree that Wiley has used this term appropriately in titling this book by Thomas Myer. This book tackles both Automator and Applescript and effectively describes how the two can complement each other. I have read many books and articles on AppleScript and I find that it can be quite daunting as the information available doesn't seem to get updated as frequently as books for iLife or iWork for example.
This book is updated to include changes to Automator and AppleScript for the Snow Leopard operating system so it is a current book. I really liked the flow of the book starting with the Qucik Start chapter. This was a really nice feature because this book is a daunting 540 pages. I have a couple of other books about the same size and they just dive in and you can get lost very quickly. The Quick Start chapter allows the reader to see what Automator and AppleScript can do and the differences between the two methods of automating tasks on the Mac. Myer also explained Automation and why you might want it in the following chapter. I liked this and could relate to his explanation of Automation. After all, in our busy lives we need help making our lives easier and less hectic. Repetitive tasks on a computer can be boring and often as result can result in errors. This book inspired many ideas for better cataloguing my photos and playing my iTunes music. One example that is shown is how to rename files and to take it a step further with photos. I am horrible at organizing my files but with the help of Automator, instead of loading them directly into iPhoto, I could run my Automation workflow, this could be run as a workflow, an application or a plug-in, and pre process my files and then more than likely add them to iPhoto. I need to try the last step later to make sure it will work. This way instead of IMG-0235, you could have a filename like 2010-Family_Vacation-0235. And you can do more than one change to a file at a time, like changing the labels for all photos to a specific color, making a pdf contact sheet by making the photos into thumbnails. This really excites me. I feel now I can use my Mac to help be organized and that is the whole point. Another Automation task I thought of is that I have over 30GB of music. I always seem to play the same songs over and over, well with AppleScript, I could create a playlist that I haven't played or haven't played in over 60 days. The possibilities are endless. If when you are reading you are having problems thinking of ways to Automate, chapters 15-19 are full of projects which of course you can modify to your liking. Wiley makes the code examples available online so you don't need to type them all in which is a nice bonus. The author did a very good job of the Appendices of this book, this is just not extra pages stuck at the end of the book to make it bigger. There is great information here for you to further increase your knowledge of Automator and AppleScript. The reader level of this book is from Beginner to Advanced, I would agree with this. For the novice this will be a learning curve but there are many examples to reference. I liked this book and will be using it to re-write the AppleScript that I use to post this review for AAUG. It was my first attempt at a big script and it needs a bit of rework. The author looks at AppleScript Studio in X-Code briefly, it is nice that he covers it even though it could probably be a whole other book in itself. Many books I have read previously do not cover it at all.
In closing, I think this is one of the best Automator and AppleScript books available today.Apple Automator with AppleScript Bible Overview

MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac ReviewThe MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac by Gary Rosenzweig is the book I wish I could have read a couple years back when I bought a MacBook.
I heard all of the Mac fanboy chatter about "once you go Mac, you never go back." But I got it, played with it, preferred the PC and went back.
The MacBook was nicely designed, but I was underwhelmed by it after all the hype. In the afterglow of experimenting with it, the MacBook has largely been a coaster for my drinks.
But after reading MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac, I have to reconsider the Mac.
Back when I bought my MacBook, I was excited to edit video with it and got a "Quickstart Guide for iMovie." But those hundreds of pages didn't give me much of a quick start.
Then I looked at this MacMost.com Guide and found the simple basics for iMovie in just a couple pages. And that's typical of this book... it covers all of the questions and issues I had back then about moving over from a PC.
One thing I liked a lot about the MacBook was the built-in camera. I've had a couple Dell laptops with the built-in camera and they didn't measure up for recording video.
Anyhow, I am thinking of giving this Mac thing another try because of this book.
And I'd definitely encourage Mac users to check out the site of the book author, Gary Rosenzweig: http://macmost.com/MacMost.com Guide to Switching to the Mac Overview

Mac OS X Snow Leopard Bible ReviewThis book is great!
It has all you need to get up to speed on Snow Leopard and how to exploit all of the features of the Mac OS and the enhancements in the new version. I would recommend this book for the Mac newbies and veterans alike. In addition to the standard instruction of basic functionality there are plenty of inside tips and tricks to help you get your Mac humming along.
The Layout of this book makes it easy to read, and find, the information you are looking for. It is written in a straight forward no-nonsense style that focuses on exactly what you need to use the new, and existing features of Mac OS-X. I have had this book for a couple of weeks now, and as a Mac veteran, I am surprised by how much new information is in this edition of the book.
Galen Gruman and Mark Hattersley have transformed this book over previous editions, for me this has become the essential must-have reference for OS-X. Even though Apple make OS-X fast simple and easy to use. This book will help you uncover the real potential of OS-X, and makes it even easier to use.Mac OS X Snow Leopard Bible Overview

Mac OS X Power Tools ReviewHere's the thing about book reviews: They're a lot easier to write when you either absolutely hated or absolutely adored the book in question. Once you've decided how you feel about it, it's easy to find a dozen examples of its mediocrity or excellence, as the case may be. However, I've been sitting on this particular review for a few weeks now, unable to finish it because I can't say that I feel very strongly at all about Power Tools. I recently decided, however, that being unable to form a definite opinion of it one way or another is itself a kind of opinion. There's nothing glaringly wrong with it or missing from it, but when it comes down to whether I'd choose to buy it over a different Mac book, I can't say that I would. I realize that this isn't a work of fiction - its goal isn't exactly to suck me in with thrilling plot twists so that I read the whole thing cover to cover in one sitting. Nevertheless, there are some other books out there that do exactly that (I'll get to them later), and I think I've been spoiled by reading them.
What I Liked
Power Tools covers its bases in a thorough, informative way. It's a solid OS X book, intended for anyone who understands the very basics involved in using a Mac. The author makes very clear early on that he's not intending to show you how to log in, or how to launch an application, but that's about the extent of the proficiency required, I think. Frakes seems to understand his audience and to address it consistently, which is rare enough to be refreshing. One of my pet peeves in technical writing concerns authors who can't decide who they're talking to - sidebars for beginners and power users are great, but when the body of the text itself waffles back and forth between skill levels, it can be both frustrating and confusing. This is a trap that Power Tools sidesteps completely: At the beginning of each section, you'll find a couple of lines telling you whether an Admin account is required for the techniques described, and whether the changes being made are system-wide or will affect only your own account. Mac OS X Hacks (which is, incidentally and confusingly enough, the Mac equivalent of O'Reilly's classic Unix Power Tools) uses a similar system to introduce each of the hacks in the book, and it's a practice that I'd like to see used more widely.
What I Didn't Like
Although this is purely a matter of taste and I'm aware that there are many people who disagree with me, I just don't like Frakes's writing style. I have enjoyed some of his columns in the past, but it seems like his humor falls more than a little flat when stretched out over the course of a book. The alliterative titles were amusing for the first one or two chapters, but "Apple-ication Aptitude" is pushing it just a bit, I think. Although I realize that the first priority of a technical book is not to entertain its readers, exactly, is it too much to ask that it enthuse us? I was already interested in OS X before reading Power Tools, but I didn't find anything to excite me - how would a new Mac user fare?
The Bottom Line
This is a perfectly adequate OS X book, and you wouldn't be wasting your money by buying it. Indeed, if you're already a fan of the author, you should probably do exactly that. For me, though, while it does a decent job of accomplishing the tasks it sets for itself, the book just never quite cuts it for me. The bottom line is really that if I had enough money to buy only a single Mac book, this wouldn't be it. I'd spend my forty dollars (or so) instead on either Mac OS X Unleashed or Mac OS X: The Missing Manual. Frakes actually recommends the latter as an alternative for absolute beginners who would be lost in his own book, but don't make the mistake of thinking it's just for novices. It really is a complete OS X manual, covering topics for users at every skill level. As for Unleashed, I've reviewed this book already (more recently than I have the Missing Manual) so I'll just say that if you want a Mac book so complete that it will introduce you to web programming so you can use of that default Apache installation, then that's a book you should consider. While I would prefer either one of these books to Power Tools if I were only able to buy one, it's also true that I'm not sorry to have added it to my collection (since, like most people, I'm not limited to one book per subject).
And Furthermore
Dan Frakes is a generally beloved Mac writer and developer and, my ambivalence about this book aside, his stuff is worth looking into. He contributes to the "Mac OS X Secrets" column in Macworld and is also involved in the 9th edition of the Mac Bible. His personal site is danfrakes.com, and the site for this book is at macosxpowertools.com.Mac OS X Power Tools Overview
