Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop (DV Expert Series) ReviewIt must first be said that Douglas Spotted Eagle obviously understands Vegas, which is the best NLE program for its price. But this book did not live up to the editorial review hype
I purchased this manual hoping for an in-depth Vegas Pro 8 learning experience, but I am somewhat disappointed. Editing mistakes within the book made some parts a bit confusing. And if a working veg file is on the DVD to follow what the book is teaching, use the same image as in the book.. But, the author did do a great job of explaining things that were previously murky to me. (Masking, for example.)
The single most important thing I gleaned is what Douglas Spotted Eagle espouses throughout this manual. EXPERIMENT. Check out every fx - every transition - every filter. Add multiple fx to events - see what happens.
The workshop is advertized as 528 pages, so I figured it would be worth the price. But a chapter touting plug-ins should not have been included. I can get that kind of info by Googling.
By the way, there are many Vegas Pro 8 user "tutorials" posted on YouTube. Vegas Pro 9 Editing Workshop ReviewI bought Vegas 9 from Videoguys in November and it came with zip documentation except the cryptic CD manual that Sony ought not include. I did get a Douglas Spotted Eagle training DVD with the DVD and liked his style and found the information he provided to be of much help, but it didn't go far enough. So I was happy to see this book available.
I am new to video although I've worked with digital audio for years and stills in Producer. Every page of this book has useful information that has brought me up to speed on Vegas. I pretty much know what I want to do with the software, but finding it in the manual is impossible -- such as how do you separate a video and audio track? I spent hours looking for the answer in the documentation; I had it in minutes with the Vegad Pro 9 Workshop.
The only negative is the book does not cover DVD Architect. So I had to spend another $28 here to get that book. I thought the chapters on the DVD included with the book would cover that, but they are chapters that are really outdated and talk about DV and the future of HD and versions 5 and 6 of Vegas. Overall, the DVD resources aren't that great, but the book stands on its own. Highly recommended for novice and pro alike.Vegas Pro 9 Editing Workshop Overview

Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies with Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 ReviewThe manual that comes with VideoPro x4 describes what each command but does but it does not provide sense of how how all the commands fit together to make a movie. Its a bit like reading a dictionary in an effort to understand literature. The Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies provides that missing insight.
I gave this manual 4 stars because it is written such that it requires the reader to start at page 1 and read each page in order to progress through the subjects. I tend to jump around documentation reading only the sections with which I am unfamiliar. This manual builds a sample movie project that becomes more involved in later chapters. Vegas 6 Editing Workshop ReviewI was disappointed by Vegas 5 Editing Workshop - because I was expecting so much.
This isn't a bad book; but it's a bad book if you're a beginner and want to be led through Vegas 5 with lots of excercises and drills like a 'Sams Teach Yourself *** in 24 Hours' computer book.
For a novice there's nothing better than being given spoon-fed examples just to get you going, and leaving the advanced stuff for later.
Douglas Spotted Eagle, who is a well known Vegas expert, seems to be talking to people who are either a) video editing savy b) Vegas savy or c) both.
He uses the whole book to tell you about all the amazing things you CAN do with Vegas, instead of actually showing you HOW you could do those things with 1-2-3 examples.
After a few chapters you'll become increasingly frustrated as you look for guidance and tuition. You won't find it here.
This book is a good reference for people who have already got their feet wet using Vegas, but for beginners, forget it.
A much better beginners Vegas is 'Naked Vegas 5' by Doug Sahlin, or 'Instant Vegas 5' by the same Douglas Spotted Eagle.

Premiere Elements 8: The Missing Manual ReviewI first tried "Premiere Elements 8 For Dummies" by Keith Underdahl and found it lacking., finding its style lackadaisical - and in many ways, just plain lacking.
Chris Grover's book, on the other hand, jumps right into things with a quick tour of premiere Elements and familiarizes you with the program, leading you to the completion of an "InstantMovie". This is more satisfying than the approach taken in the Dummies book.
Grover then takes the reader on a more detailed excursion through Premiere Elements, beginning with importing video, sound, still pictures and animation. He then moves into using Premiere Elements to organize your media assets. I disagree with the placement of this chapter for my preference would actually be to have it as an appendix. But logically it does flow properly even though I suspect most people will not make significant use of these features.
Thirty or so pages on editing come next. There are plenty of illustrations, which is very helpful.
The balance of the chapters in this section cover adding transitions, effects and themes and animated effects and titles, closing with a section on editing your sound track.
Grover's writing style is clear and generally concise. He includes a lot of very useful information and often, but helpfully, refers to other programs and resources that may be useful.
In the final part, Grover covers getting your finished projects to the web, CD, DVD and devices like the iPod.
There are also two handy appendixes covering the menus in detail for both Premiere Elements and its companion Elements Organizer program.
Finally, there is a site for downloading video material to use in the lessons provided, as well as other materials.
In sum, this is a complete instructional manual on how ot use every aspect of Adobe Premiere Elements 8. You can read it in bits and pieces, use it straight through as a course or just dip into it as a reference. It works on all levels.
Well worth the price.
