Game Programming Gems 7 (Game Programming Gems Series) ReviewThere is some decent written material here, although the articles are typically vague and seem to omit important implementation details more often than not. However, if you're buying this book thinking you are going to get working examples... you're not.
The CD is absolutely ridiculous. Of the half-dozen examples I've looked at so far, one was completely missing and all but one of the others just didn't work. The binaries died with strange errors; trying to build the source gets you a laundry list of nontrivial errors. One example appears to have been built on top of a very old version of the DirectX sample framework, and doesn't include a copy of any of the headers that it needs from that framework; another throws errors about missing arguments in function calls.
Even if the code did compile, though, it's generally absolutely horribly organized. One example chose to pile everything into a single source file--including a TGA loader class cribbed from GPWiki, some basic utility classes, a bunch of DirectX setup code, and (somewhere in there) the several dozen lines of the actual example. Comments are generally sparse.
Despite the fact that the book has been out for almost a year and that there are a significant number of problems, there is also absolutely no errata available via the publisher's website. In fact, the only way I found the missing example was to find a forum post discussing the fact that it was missing which included, in a reply, a link to the author's blog. The blog was, of course, being "updated" and so the post in question was gone; it took a trip to Google's cache to get the download link on that page to get the source.
Read the articles! They're decent stuff--but the CD is a bad, bad joke. Since most, if not all, of the articles in this book are simply about implementing techniques that are well-covered in the literature, that detracts significantly from the book's usefulness and appeal.Game Programming Gems 7 (Game Programming Gems Series) Overview

Digital Video for Dummies, Third Edition Review"3rd Edition" I would recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a Video Editing Guru. Now there isn't much fame or glory in such a title, and I'm not implying that after reading the book you will be able to instantly break into the "Pro" video editing business either. But it does give you some useful information on how to digitize those video clips and turn them into a respectable home movie or corporate presentation.
The book is very much based on Apple's "iMovie" and Pinnacle's "Studio 8". You'll skip around a bit because of the 2 different programs it explains, but you're really just getting 2 books in one if you ever decide to dabble in the 'other' program. If you're using a video editing program other than these, you may want to pick a different book.
Well organized and "dumb-ed down" enough for the beginner. The projects and included clips on CD Rom keep it interesting. I learned about many tips that I plan to use all the time in my projects now. Good work Underdahl!
Based on what I've seen in this book, I would definitely check out the Adobe Premiere Dummies book by the same author if I decide to move up to that program. I'm confident that I would not be disappointed.Digital Video for Dummies, Third Edition Overview

Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop (DV Expert Series) ReviewIt must first be said that Douglas Spotted Eagle obviously understands Vegas, which is the best NLE program for its price. But this book did not live up to the editorial review hype
I purchased this manual hoping for an in-depth Vegas Pro 8 learning experience, but I am somewhat disappointed. Editing mistakes within the book made some parts a bit confusing. And if a working veg file is on the DVD to follow what the book is teaching, use the same image as in the book.. But, the author did do a great job of explaining things that were previously murky to me. (Masking, for example.)
The single most important thing I gleaned is what Douglas Spotted Eagle espouses throughout this manual. EXPERIMENT. Check out every fx - every transition - every filter. Add multiple fx to events - see what happens.
The workshop is advertized as 528 pages, so I figured it would be worth the price. But a chapter touting plug-ins should not have been included. I can get that kind of info by Googling.
By the way, there are many Vegas Pro 8 user "tutorials" posted on YouTube. All free!Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop (DV Expert Series) OverviewMaster the Vegas Pro 8 toolset, including its industry-leading HD and audio capabilities. Final Cut Pro Power Skills: Work Faster and Smarter in Final Cut Pro 7 ReviewI am a doctor who decided to learn video to educate my patients about health care. I have now completed two documentaries and am currently working on two more. Having followed Larry Jordan's online courses on Final Cut Pro for over two years now, I have gone from knowing nothing about video and video editing, to what some have described as semi-pro. FCP Power Skills is an exceptional book which is well-organized and clearly describes both those editing methods that we editors use over and over again, as well as many lesser-known techniques that greatly make video editing more efficient and pleasurable. Anyone using Final Cut Pro, from beginner to "expert", could benefit from purchasing this book. Larry is one of the most experienced professionals in video editing, and has a great way of adding a sense of humor that makes learning a delight. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.Final Cut Pro Power Skills: Work Faster and Smarter in Final Cut Pro 7 Overview
