Space Planning with Architectural Desktop R3.3 ReviewThis book starts with a criteria table and walks you through a project from beginning to end, creating spaces, space styles, analyzing adjacencies, creating areas, area reports. Using Space Boundaries and then converting them to walls. Developing the floor plan, creating the reflected ceiling plan, and furnishing the spaces, ending with 2D and 3D elevations.
Along the way, you learn how to manage displays, create custom tags and schedules, set up your system to do just space planning work, create layouts and documentation.
Many of the tools in this book aren't discussed anywhere else - not even in Autodesk's Knowledge Base. The perfect book to help you understand how to use ADT for space planning, great for the classroom or the office. (No tests in this book - just lots of step by step tutorials with plenty of screen shots.) No prior knowledge of ADT is assumed. Experience with AutoCAD is preferred.Space Planning with Architectural Desktop R3.3 OverviewThis book focuses on the space planning capabilities of Architectural Desktop. Working with space criteria tables to determine the best floor plan and use of space, you create and use documentation layouts, spaces, space boundaries, areas, area groups, space and room tags, create 3D and 2D elevations of rooms, and schedules. The book is suitable for new users of Architectural Desktop.

Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop ReviewArchitectural Desktop is conceptually easy to understand, but expert guidence is required in order to use all it's features to produce "real" work, . This is a book written by an Architect who intimately knows ADT and also knows how Architects work. The book is very well written, it is clear and useful in its presentation. I wasn't getting very far with ADT until I read this book, (and I've read other ADT books). I highly recommend it.Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop OverviewRather than a reference, this text teaches Autodesk Architectural Desktop (ADT) by foregrounding its conceptual aspects. The extensive tutorials are directed at architects, interior designers, facilities planners, and students. With this audience in mind, the design development and construction doc

CATIA V5R20 for Designers ReviewI bought this book upon purchasing and downloading the CATIA V5R20 Student Edition. One fo the issues today with getting a job in the design field is there is always that software you "need to know" to get the job. After doing some research and finding out which companies may use CATIA, I had to add this software to the list of 3D-CAD Softwares to "need to know".
This book is excellent for beginners and people who are also not quite beginners to 3D Modeling.CATIA V5R20 for Designers Overview

Web Cartography (Geographic Information Systems Workshop) ReviewMasterpiece! The bible of Internet Cartography. A must have for every Web GIS (Geographic Information Systems) lover and developer!Web Cartography (Geographic Information Systems Workshop) OverviewMaps and atlases are created as soon as information on our geography has been clarified. They are used to find directions or to get insight into spatial relations. They are produced and used both on paper as well as on-screen. The Web is the new medium for spreading and using maps. This book explains the benefits of this medium from the perspective of the user, and the map provider. Opportunities and pitfalls are illustrated by a set of case-studies. A website accompanies the book and provides a dynamic environment for demonstrating many of the principles set out in the text, including access to a basic course in Internet cartography as well as links to other interesting places on the Web. Professor Kraak looks at basic questions such as "I have this data what can I do with it?" and discusses the various functions of maps on the web. Web Cartography also looks at the particularities of multidimensional web maps and addresses topics such as map contents (colour, text and symbols), map physics (size and resolution), and the map environment (interface design/site contents).

Real World Compositing with Adobe Photoshop CS4 ReviewThis is really an instruction manual on how to sell a book with a misleading title and virtually no useful content for a hefty price. I kept waiting for the authors to quit wasting time and actually get to the "Industrial-strength Imaging Techniques" promised on the cover. It never happened. After 200 pages of filler, there are a few actual examples of compositing, but nothing you couldn't readily find online for free. A complete disappointment, especially considering it's published in association with Adobe Press. Some free advice for Adobe Press: before you put your name on it, try passing it by one of your editors, eh?

The Joy of Dreamweaver MX: Recipes for Data-Driven Web Sites ReviewThis book teaches Dreamweaver MX by using actual examples, by providing step by step instructions and finished code.
Unfortunately, there are tools (third party extensions) that are recommended and used in the tutorials but are not available for use. They are either available at additional cost or are just not compatible with this version of Dreamweaver.
This leads to nothing but frustration as key concepts cannot be explored. I am referring to concepts such as file uploads and adding records to table (with identity key). I purchased this book to bring me up to speed so that I could implement a project I'm currently working on and due to it's shortcomings I feel inclined to return it as I cannot follow the examples that I really need.
In an attempt to be fare I'll continue by saying that the author does state that the book is not for novices and that it's shortcomings can probably be worked around by reviewing the finished code. But that, I think, defeats Dreamweaver Mx's main purpose of providing server side behaviours without (much) coding. Also the code generated by MX is not the easiest thing to make sense of.The Joy of Dreamweaver MX: Recipes for Data-Driven Web Sites Overview

SolidWorks 2010 Part II - Advanced Techniques ReviewAdvanced mean a lot of things to different people; this book to me is not advanced. I'm not sure what it is? It does not cover surfaces, equations, complex design tables, assemblies (two, three or more levels of configurations) advanced system and document options or a simple item like Top-down assemblies. The one example in the book that addresses a Top-down assembly does not even start with the user creating a 3D sketch or a layout sketch. You open a model and then starting working with it. There is very little on Advanced or Mechanical mates. The tutorials are very limited and the models user poor design techniques.SolidWorks 2010 Part II - Advanced Techniques Overview

CAD for Interiors Basics, with DVD ReviewThis book falls into an interesting balance for the user.
First, it takes the point of view that the interior designer has to be able to produce drawings to illustrate the buildings he is designing. In today's world that really means that the student has to use a computer assisted design package.
Second it accepts that AutoCAD is the default standard for CAD systems. The author also realizes that AutoCAD has become so big, so powerful and so all encompassing that while it can be used for almost any kind of design job there is a subset of its capabilities, 'the basics' if you will, that the interior designer will really need to know.
As such, he has presented a basic AutoCAD manual oriented to the interior designer. He uses terminology from the interior design world rather than something else like say the plumbing world. And second as the title of the book says, he teaches the basics, the core commands, of using AutoCAD. With this book you can get your interior design job completed. And if you need to know more you can go to a more advanced book.
The DVD included with the book consists primarily of video presentations that talk about and illustrate the functionality of these core commands.CAD for Interiors Basics, with DVD Overview

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Photographers Guide ReviewOK, you've purchased a DSLR and either Photoshop CS3 or Elements. Now you want to know how you can best use your new camera to capture the best images you can, so that when you get them into Photoshop you'll be able to process them to their fullest potential and really get some impressive images, much better than the point n shoot crowd. You can spend 3 years and read nearly 20 books like I did, but who really has time for that? Isn't there one book out there that gives someone a good taste of all of the components of photography and Photoshop? Yep, this is the one! I've read it through, and comparing it to several other all-in-one guides to both photography and Photoshop, this is one of the best choices. There are many good soup-to-nuts Photoshop books out there, but not many of them teach how to optimize your photography skills to ensure the best possible image BEFORE firing up Photoshop. How do you get a great image out of Photoshop? Start with a great image. This book tells you how, and it's not just for beginners.
Pick this one up, even if you own a different version of Photoshop. It's a winner.Adobe Photoshop CS3 Photographers Guide OverviewPhotography and Photoshop go hand in hand. Whether you're using a digital pixel-grabber or hanging onto a film camera, Adobe's revamped flagship image editor, Photoshop CS3, has the tools you need to fine-tune your photos and correct errors in exposure, lighting, and color balance. This full-color book is packed with effective examples, simple-to follow techniques, and tricks that serve as a jumping-off point to spark your own creativity into action. You don't need to be an ace photographer or Photoshop expert to create eye-catching effects through both traditional and leading-edge photographic techniques.Use easy-to-master Photoshop tools to:* Match colors between shots taken under wildly different lighting conditions.* Duplicate colorful "cross processing" darkroom effects.* Morph images to blend or distort them.* Add zoom lens blur effects without using a zoom lens.* Preserve all the key tonal values and separation between subjects in your monochrome images with new black-and-white conversion techniques.

The User Is Always Right: A Practical Guide to Creating and Using Personas for the Web ReviewWhen creating a web site, it's very easy to fall into the trap of designing it for yourself. Unfortunately, you're not the typical user in most cases, nor are you the intended audience. You can avoid this problem with the use of "personas". The subject is covered very well in this book.
User-driven design means that you focus on what the user needs in a system instead of designing features because they're "cool". Personas are imaginary users of your system that you keep in mind while designing how the application will work. But it's much more than just picking a name like Bob and then coding away...
This book goes into the process of interviewing the user base of your proposed application, determining the needs and abilities of that base. A system that is to be used by computer-savvy accountants will not have the same look and feel as a system that is intended for your grandmother. By conducting these interviews and consolidating the results, the designer can get a good idea as to what a typical user will look like. That information is then used to create a number of personas, or fictitious people who will be the target audience. These personas come complete with names, pictures, and a background. Then instead of building features based on how you feel about them, you look at the feature through the eyes of "Bob", based on his attitudes, experience, and personality. It's like having a user available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The User Is Always Right takes you through the steps necessary to understand the audience for your system, as well as how to make that audience "real" in terms of individual people. The authors do a nice job in making the process clear and understandable, and by the end you can start building your imaginary friends with confidence. The process outlined here is one that you wouldn't necessarily use for every project, as you could spend days gathering and distilling the data you collect. But the concepts they present, once understood, will allow you to build your "Bob"s even with small systems. Then armed with that knowledge, you can anticipate answers to the question "what would Bob do?"
So... If you are tired of designing really cool systems (to you) that don't ever seem to get used, it may be because you missed the real users. Give the persona technique a try, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how it affects your development.
Besides, how else could you actually be commended for inviting and talking to imaginary friends? The User Is Always Right: A Practical Guide to Creating and Using Personas for the Web Overview

Mastering Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor LT 2011 ReviewI used SolidWorks for several years, and switched to Inventor due to a job change a while back. For the most part I was able to make the switch and find my way around, but decided that I'd get a couple of Inventor reference books to help out.
I'm pleasantly surprised with the amount of useful information in this book. I thought I'd pick up a couple of things here and there, but it seems that I learn a new method or tip on each topic. I've even gone back and done some of the more basic beginner tutorials and have picked up some tricks from those. One thing I find interesting about the style of this book is that there are often several tools demonstrated in a single tutorial. For instance I just finished a loft tutorial that covered a number of surfacing tools as well.
There is a lot of information in this book, and I haven't gotten to it all, but I feel very good about having this on my desk when I need it. I think this one has something for everyone from new users to seasoned pros. Glad I bought it.Mastering Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor LT 2011 OverviewExpert authors Curtis Waguespack and Thom Tremblay developed this detailed reference and tutorial with straightforward explanations, real-world examples, and practical tutorials that focus squarely on teaching Inventor tips, tricks, and techniques. The authors extensive experience across industries and their Inventor expertise allowsthem to teach the software in the context of real-world workflows and work environments. They present topics that are poorly documented elsewhere, such as design tactics for large assemblies, effective model design for different industries, strategies for effective data and asset sharing across teams, using 2D and 3D data from other CAD systems, and improving designs by incorporating engineering principles.
Mastering Inventor 2011 begins with an overview of Inventor design concepts and application before exploring all aspects of part design, including sketching, basic and advanced modeling techniques, working with sheet metal, and part editing. The book then looks at assemblies and subassemblies, explaining real-world workflows and offering extensive detail on working with large assemblies.

Weldment design is detailed next before the reader is introduced to the functional design using Design Accelerators and Design Calculators. The detailed documentation chapter then covers everything from presentation files to simple animations to documentation for exploded views, sheet metal flat patterns, and more. The following chapters explore crucial productivity-boosting tools, data exchange, the Frame Generator, and the Inventor Studio visualization tools. Finally, the book explores Inventor Professional's dynamic simulation and stress analysis features as well as the routed systems features (piping, tubing, cabling, and harnesses).

Mastering Inventor's detailed discussions are reinforced with step-by-step tutorials, and readers can compare their work to the downloadable before-and-after tutorial files. It also features content to help readers pass the Inventor 2011 Certified Associate and Certified Professional exams and will feature instructor support materials appropriate for use in both the training and higher education channels. Mastering Inventor is the ultimate resource for those who want to quickly become proficient with Autodesk's 3D manufacturing software and prepare for the Inventor certification exams.

FrontPage 2003 (The Missing Manual) ReviewThe thing I like most about "FrontPage 2003 : The Missing Manual" by Jessica Mantaro is how well this book is laid out. There are many times when a book is not intelligently planned out ahead of time and you are dealt with the obstacle of having to search chapter through chapter to find what you are looking for. Upon opening this book you will immediately find this to not be the case. Separated into 18 chapters with a helpful index at the end, this book covers all the important topics:
01. Creating a basic web site
02. Adding and editing text
03. Working with Hyperlinks
04. Image manipulation and insertion
05. Creating tables
06. Using frames
07. How Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is used
08. Using layers
09. Learning DHTML
10. Learning about site structure
11. Using themes and templates
12. How to test your site
13. Publishing your site for the world to see
14. Collaboration tools available
15. Using forms in your site
16. Working with databases
17. Communicating with a database
18. Integrating FrontPage with other Office apps
Simply stated, this is a fantastic reference manual for anyone that needs to learn FrontPage 2003 or wants to get more out of this application that has made so much progress the last couple of versions. FrontPage used to be a basic, clunky app that wasn't the best tool around, but of all the 2003 Microsoft Office updates, this application is probably the one most worthy of an upgrade. The new version of FP truly shines over the rest and it will be a helpful companion by your side while you are working on your corporate or personal web site.
A fantastic manual for learning and/or reference that truly should have been in the box. Expertly written by an experienced technical writer who brings her years of experience to the table, making it easy for the everyday John/Jane Doe to become a FrontPage 2003 pro!!

Real World Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications ReviewWhen I picked up Claudia McCue's book on print production, it was with the intent of becoming a bit more knowledgeable about pre-flight requirements on my print designs. I had no idea that her book would be so in-depth and that I would be entertained along the way. McCue's writing style is completely readable. Believe me, I was prepared to prop my eyelids open in order to get through a book on print production requirements. So I was pleasantly surprised to find Claudia McCue's Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications such an enjoyable read.
The book begins with a history of printing, to help us understand current terminology and techniques (and to appreciate advances in modern printing technology!) then leads us into a tour of a contemporary print shop. McCue makes certain that we are well prepared for our journey into the printing world by starting us off with all the necessary printing jargon. She next explains what is needed in color versus black and white printing, complications that might arise with various print papers and how to deal with them, and design preparation for binding. She discusses the use of fonts, using pcs or macs and their communication limitations. A much appreciated chapter (for both printers and designers alike) is on planning for printing, or submitting the job to a printer. In this chapter she points out the necessity of planning ahead to increase productivity and limit avoidable aggravations.
A major key point to this book are the chapters specific to the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Applications-Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. McCue refers to these chapters as "Production Tips" which really, truly are worth their weight in gold. In fact, this book could easily have been alternately named "How to be Smarter, Make Your Boss Smile More & Save Yourself Many Hours of Brain-Wrenching Headaches".
I can't remember the last time I crawled into bed with a warm cup of tea and a print production book to do a little late-night reading, and well, that's because it might have been never, until I opened this one. Just a few of her topic headings that have had me grinning include "Forensic Tools", found toward the end of the book, which discusses how to scope out mistakes in InDesign pre-print, "Watch Your Language", on naming files appropriately, and "Let it Bleed", explaining InDesign's bleed options.
Claudia McCue has more than twenty years of experience in pre-press, and it really does feel like she has packed all of it into "Real World's Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications". Twenty years flies by fast when you're having fun. Thanks to Claudia I won't be spending that much more time learning these lessons the hard way.Real World Print Production with Adobe Creative Suite Applications Overview
