HTML, XHTML & CSS For Dummies ReviewAs a retired aerospace engineer closing with 70, I must be the quintessential cyberspace "Dummie". Looking for a change from retirement boredom, I decided to write a specialist e-guide on kayaking and river running in Thailand. Of course, I would need a website to carry it. So, I set out to build one and obtained two "Dummies" books on website building. They were very good books, both, full of great info. But they made it very clear that I'd have to have something a little more than a passing acquaintance with the site building code, HTML. I had a bad feeling. It sounded, boring, ominous and turgid, rather like eating breakfast cereal without the milk. But I pressed on and bought one of the books recommended which was "HTML 4 for Dummies" by Ed Tittel and Mary Burmeister, 5th Edition. What a surprise. I may be a computer slowcoach, late to the cyberspace gate, but I am a professional and I do recognize and respect professionalism when meet it. The book was a breeze to follow, well written and superbly structured, with countless tips and links to helpful websites. I read the book through with pleasure and plundered it for instruction as I built my website. Mr. Tittel is a pro. He knows his subject well and, writing with a deft sense of humor, he teaches, guides and instills confidence in the reader. So much confidence that I have decided to build more websites. And who knows, maybe even become a webmaster. I lent my copy to a friend and he feels the same. It now sits torn, dog-eared, taped-up and battle-scarred on my bookshelf.
So when I heard of the latest edition "HTML, XHTML and CSS for Dummies" with Mr. Tittel in collaboration with Jeff Noble I obtained a copy. This book has everything the earlier book had, but more. Expanded, naturally, and with more emphasis on CSS and other relevant advances it's a wonderful book. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. It even packs along a dedicated website! If you're a beginner and want to build a website and want a good grasp of HTML, grab this book. And you'll be glad you did.

Safari and WebKit Development for iPhone OS 3.0 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis is the best book on mobile web apps, especially iPhone apps. I have a background in CSS, javascript and PHP, but I thought I would have to learn objective-C to create apps for the iPhone. I found out about WebKit on the internet and I wanted to learn more. While some books touch on WebKit, this book explains it in detail.
I recommend some background in CSS, but you don't have to be a technical wizard to learn from this book. I was creating web-based apps for the iPhone in a matter of hours. I want to convert some of my existing web pages to look good on an iPhone. This book showed me how to make my web apps look like native iPhone apps. This information will be useful when I start working on iPad apps.
This book saved me hours on the learning curve, and since I can now tell my clients that I can create mobile apps, my business is increasing. Mobile apps are the future. This book will move you to the front of the line in this new area.Safari and WebKit Development for iPhone OS 3.0 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Overview

HTML & CSS: The Good Parts (Animal Guide) ReviewThis book gives strategic advice for how to use HTML and CSS. It's not a comprehensive introduction to HTML and CSS; that would take a much larger book. It reminds me of the Effective C++ books by Scott Meyers: advice on how to make good use of the language, not a syntax tutorial. It sometimes explains what to do but not how to do it. In those cases, the book gives links to a companion web site with more details. If you have some experience with HTML and CSS, but feel like you're not using the tools as well as you'd like, this would be a good book to pick up.
I appreciate that the author endorses the spirit of web standards without being a language lawyer. Sometimes you have to make compromises.HTML & CSS: The Good Parts (Animal Guide) Overview

How to Build Your Own Web Site With Little or No Money: The Complete Guide for Business and Personal Use (How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful...) ReviewWhat initially struck me about this book is how comprehensive it is. It certainly lives up to the title, providing a wealth of information on how to build a website without spending a lot of money and then how to get traffic to it. Bruce Brown promises that, even if you have never built a website before, the book has more than enough information to help you do this. A novice like me is, therefore, expecting to see step-by-step instructions on how to design, build and publish a website from scratch.
There is indeed a comprehensive HTML tutorial with additional, if brief, information on XTML and a few other coding languages. If you have the time, you should be able to learn html by following the guidance provided. But for those who don't want to take the time to learn HTML, there's a chapter that describes the advantages and drawbacks of software products on the market that will do the HTML coding for you, such as Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Create Suite 3. I would probably opt for these products and not spend time learning html. But they're pretty costly, so your decision is going to be based on your time and budget. Luckily, there's a chapter on free website design tools such as Joomla, Wordpress, and NVu that can be used to build websites.
It made more sense to me to have the chapters on web design fundamentals and web content appear before the coding chapters since you need to have a structure or blueprint in place before you start building the site, but both chapters do a good job of explaining in detail how to structure your site for easy navigation and create content that is search-engine optimized as well as user-friendly. There are also fairly comprehensive chapters on website graphics, web page formats, and electronic shopping carts, giving you just about everything you need to create a fully functional business website.
The rest of the book is devoted to SEO, how to generate traffic, PPC and Google Adsense advertising, affiliate marketing, blogging and social networking. Interviews with several web design experts answering the same questions provide additional tips and strategies. And the book includes real-life examples of how several individuals built their own websites and established successful web-based businesses with them.
I have to admit, I was a little intimidated and overwhelmed by what's required to actually build a website from scratch. There were a lot of terms that I didn't understand and had to look up, but I believe, with this book, some time and patience, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to pull it off.

HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition ReviewAs the title says, this book is for people with very little knowledge of HTML - but knowledge of how to use a computer at an intermediate level. It covers most basic HTML tags, up to and including tables and a limited amount of framesets, as well as providing a large reference section aimed at the beginning HTML coder, becoming a decent reference manual even after the Tutorial section is finished.
It's not the be-all and end-all of coding references, but it's perfect for someone that is comfortable with a computer, and wants to being creating simple web pages. This can take an individual with little knowledge and give them enough information to where they can understand the more complex online references and puzzle out the rest, or to a level where they can successfully invest their time in learning more about CSS, JavaScript, and DHTML to move to more complex sites.HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition Overview

Dreamweaver CS4: The Missing Manual ReviewDreamweaver CS4 is the latest version of the popular web editing software from Abobe. There are lots of new features in this version (compared to CS3) such as Live View: a better way to see how your page works without having to open it up in a separate browser, better integration for JavaScript and Ajax, easier interface for finding and updating source and include files attached to your web pages, cleaner CSS code created and much more.
For the newbie or existing user of Dreamweaver, there is lots to learn in this new version and the book Dreamweaver CS4: The Missing Manual is a great way to get started on learning Dreamweaver or get quick updates on the new things CS4 has to offer.
Of course this book is big (over 1000 pages) but it is going to be a complete learning reference for newbie's and well as good reference for existing users of the tool.
Compared to other Dreamweaver books I have, it makes it really easy to find exactly what you want with the clear and concise headings and subheading at the top of each page. I hate books that make you hunt around for pages trying to find what area of the book you are in.
The book is divided into 6 main sections:
1. A Guided Tour: This is for the newbie who want to learn the basics of the new CS4 interface and how to use some of the basic tools for creating web pages.
2. Building a Better Web Page: This takes in depth of advanced CSS layout and design (liquid layouts, fixed layouts, elastic layouts, positioning of elements, navigation, etc.) This section alone is more information than any Dreamweaver book I've read before on layout design.
3. Bringing Your Pages to Life: This teached you how to create web forms (HTML) and add the new Spry (JavaScript library) components to your page. Spry was added to the CS3 version of Dreamweaver (you can get it separately if you want), and was vastly improved in this version of Dreamweaver. Having Spry integrated with Dreamweaver makes it 100x easier to use as opposed to adding it manually by yourself.
4. Building a Web Site: This section deals with the file and site management of Dreamweaver. Not only do you have to design and code your web pages, but you need a site management tool to keep track of all you files (.html, gif, .css, etc) and track all the updates other people may make to them as well if your working in a group. Even if you working alone on a web site, it really is important to manage your files efficiently.
5. Dreamweaver CS4 Power: This section explains the unique tools that it has to offer like libraries and templates. Dreamweaver (with most previous versions) allows you to create snipets of code and store them as a code library to be used later. These pieces of code can be used anywhere on your website and are controlled and organized by Dreamweaver automatically. Templates are just what they sound like...You can create templates in Dreamweaver and reuse them for any website you create. It eliminates you having to re-write or re-copy-and-paste your code each time you have the same section on multiple pages. It have be HTML or CSS or both that can be re-used. A great feature and improved in CS4.
6. Dynamic Dreamweaver: This section is very important and explained very well from a coding/programming standpoint. Websites today are usually using some sort of database for retrieving lots of the website's content. With Dreamweaver you can link to a database (MySQL, MS Access, Cold Fusion --- not SQL Server) and use Dreamweaver's wizards to help you create dynamic web sites. It makes it easier than having you to know lots code/programming concepts. Dreamweaver can help you create sessions (tracking visitors from multiple pages) cookies (remember visitors from each visit) and much more. The author explains these more advanced techniques very nicely and without too much "techno jargon".
The last chapter is focused on another advanced topic with XSLT and XML. This is how you can style and design your web pages from data transferred from any kind of datasource and format with XML and XSLT. Many websites today are using XML/XSLT no matter what back-end they are using. A very unique and helpful addition to a Dreamweaver book.
This book should be in everybody's library no matter what the skill level. It covers all the basics for the beginner and many advanced topics for the seasoned veteran of Dreamweaver.
A great book.Dreamweaver CS4: The Missing Manual Overview

Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (English and English Edition) ReviewThis is the most complete all-in-one manual on website development I have ever read. I was amazed on the amount of information covered in this book, it is almost overwhelming. But, if you stick it out, the end result will be a thorough foundation on website development, community building and, if you wanted to, use your new found knowledge and skills to make money on the web. This book is written, like the title states, in a manual-like style, mixed with step-by-step solutions, simple examples and detailed explanations. And If that wasn't enough already, in the appendix there is a HTML5 reference, and a bunch of website links, grouped by chapters to further extend your knowledge in each subject. I found this book easy to read and understand which is one of the main reasons why I liked it so much. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to start a career in web design or development as it will give them a rock-solid foundation on how things work and fit all together. I would also recommend this book to small business owners, or marketing managers as it will give them a complete understanding of the whole development process so they can intelligently discuss their next web project with prospective designers without their eyes glazing over from lack of knowledge. Finally, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone else, who, maybe just wants to start a blog, or make a webpage, or learn how to use stylesheets or javascript in an already existing website -- this is the book for you because you will accomplish that in just a chapter or two and come out ahead with a great reference manual to boot.Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (English and English Edition) Overview

Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide To Formatting Books For The Amazon Kindle ReviewFor the prospective Kindle author who is somewhat more advanced in the field of computers in general and HTML coding in particular, this is an excellent guide for you. Joshua Tallent is obviously far more the mathematician and programming nerd than is the average POD author who just wants to cash in from Kindle sales. If you just want to convert the Word document version of your Mr. Average Novel into DTP, then you have several options that may be more efficient for you than following the instructions contained in this book. These options include, in no particular order of significance: uploading your book directly from Word into the Amazon DTP system; running your document through the Smashwords Meatgrinder; downloading and utilizing Mobipocket Creator; or paying Joshua Tallent directly to format your book perfectly for you, a service he offers from his website. If you have a very complex book containing varied text layout or a lot of photos or other graphics, and you want it all to look as perfect as possible in the Kindle version, then hiring Mr. Tallent's services is probably your best bet. If you and/or your book fall between the cracks of some of these scenarios, then Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide by Michael R. Hicks may be the best solution. If you are at least somewhat proficient in HTML and you want to do it all yourself, then Joshua Tallent's Kindle Formatting is an excellent, detailed guide.
Is Joshua's thin book worth $20 to you, or $10 if you have a Kindle? If you barely understood how to send your simple Word document to iUniverse, letting them design your cover while you contributed very little to your book's design, then Kindle Formatting probably offers a lot more than you care to know. If you are somewhat more experienced, particularly with HTML programming, and you do not want to pay Joshua directly to do the job for you, but you want to produce a DTP version of your work that is somewhat more perfect than the result offered by the simpler methods, this will be money extremely well spent. Joshua will show you all the little HTML coding tricks to make your Kindle book look like an escapee from your local Barnes & Noble. If you own a Kindle, you can get even more benefit from Joshua's book because you can see the details of your efforts in perfect translation. One of my favorite issues covered in Kindle Formatting is that Joshua explains in text and screenshots actual differences between the Kindle and the Kindle 2. The book was released prior to the DX: maybe Joshua will update the material at some time in the future?
Joshua Tallent's Kindle Formatting will take the experienced author exactly where he wants to go. The book has two simple weaknesses. There are some obvious proofreading errors contained within the straight text portions of the book. They do not detract from the reader's comprehension of the material, but for this price for such a short book, I would expect a level nearer perfection. Also for this price, I think the author could have included a lot more rudimentary material to aid the lesser computer nerd in his project of formatting his book for the Kindle. With these two caveats in mind, I can wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Tallent's book to advanced users. If HTML programming is beyond your scope, you might be better served by Mr. Hicks' book.
Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide To Formatting Books For The Amazon Kindle OvervieweBooks are revolutionizing the publishing world, and eBook reading devices like the Amazon Kindle are on the forefront of this revolution. However, the text formatting the Kindle requires can be hard to decipher and even harder to implement. This book serves as a guide to the process of formatting eBooks that look great on the Kindle every time. Each step is explained in detail, with examples and formatting tips found nowhere else.In addition to instructions for the conversion and formatting process, this book contains detailed explanations of all the HTML and CSS markup supported by the Kindle, instructions forachieving optimal image display quality on the E Ink screen, and other details about the Kindle's formatting requirements previously left to chance or speculation.Beautiful eBooks are at your fingertips. The Kindle and its readers await.
