This whole book is filled with rigging know-how by a lover of cartoons. His primary goal is making excellent facial animation. Something this industry sorely lacks! And this is the book that documents his experiences and skills. Learn from it. Be a better rigger.
If you want to be a Rigger or Character TD for toons or even photo-real characters, these techniques will be omni-present in studios (big and small) in the next year. The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 ReviewIf you're upgrading from one of the ... beginners' image processing programs, and if you're serious about photography you should, "Photoshop 7.0" always comes out on top: the most power, the most sophistication, the best. But few of us can justify a purchase that great for a hobby. So "Photoshop Elements" looks tempting until you try it. Too many of the major tools of the full PS have been stripped out; you can't work with curves, make separations, look at individual color channels, etc., and that hurts.
Well, it turns out you can do all that! Richard Lynch's outstanding "Hidden Power" provides a CD with plug-in tools for "Photoshop Elements" that virtually turns the simpler program into the full package -- at about a quarter of the price.
If that were all Lynch's book did, I would give it 5 stars. But it isn't the whole story or even most of the story. The fact is that "Hidden Power" is just about the best explanation of what those tools do, how color imaging works, and how to use powerful tools to good advantage that I've ever seen. And I've read a lot in 10+ years of manipulating digital images.
Finally, "Hidden Power" includes the most useful tool I've owned for getting past the hardest part: making your printed output look right without spending hundreds of dollars on expensive 'profiling' gear and software. It's a simple file, with the colors recorded in CMYK format, and it's the perfect calibration tool. In one evening it solved completely the difficult problem of getting predictable, neutral-color black and white prints.
Kudos to Lynch. If you go for Photoshop Elements, you have to have "Hidden Power" to go along with it. Accept no substitutes. Give the book a sixth star.The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 Overview

Practical Poser 7 (Graphics Series) ReviewI'm about a quarter of the way through this book. So far, it has all the detail I'm looking for.
The biggest knock I have against it is, on the back of the book, it says the CD has "all the files for the tutorials, including necessary Poser content, textures, and images". THAT IS A LIE.

The Art of Photoshop, CS2 Edition ReviewI have a library of Photoshop books and there are two main types- those that deal with how to use Photoshop with no identified purpose in mind (nothing wrong with that) and Photoshop books for the digital photographer which can teach you how to get rid of blemishes or a blown out sky, etc (nothing wrong here either). In many of the latter type of Photoshop books there are sections on manipulating your photos to create art, however, the end result very much maintains the basic identity of the original photo. With The Art of Photoshop we have a very rare book, a book whose goal is to inspire photoshophers to create art, as you would see in an art gallery, with the software. Even if you are not inspired with Mr. Giordan's art, he suceeds in teaching you the tools to go create your own art. Differing from other books that touch upon Photoshop art (via manipulation of your digital photo), this book's end products do not necessairily have a direct relationship with the starting photograph(s) and sources, thus the term "art". As in any art gallery, there is some "art" that Mr. Giordan has created that I don't really care for and could be made fun of such as the burning baby example given in another review. By the way, Mr. Giordan makes it clear it is not actually meant to be a burning baby. Getting back to the book. even if I did not care for some of the art created, I still found it very valuable to learn how the art was created. Although Photoshop version CS2 was not covered much at all, still, this was an aspect of Photoshop use I had not seen much about at all- the creation of art, not just manipulating my photographs with filters to give it a Van Gogh look or whatever. If you would really like to create original art with Photoshop and not just merely manipulate your photographs with filters and such, this book is really worth a look. It has taught me techniques that I can use to create artwork that is appealing to me and I think that was the goal of the book in the first place- not as a showcase for Mr. Giordan's art, but to show the capabilities Photoshop has for creating art and this book magnificently teaches how to tap into those capabilities. I agree that if you are not interested in creating art with Photoshop this is not the book for you, however, if you are, GET THIS BOOK! Official SWiSHmax Bible ReviewI've been using SWiSHmax for at leat a year as a very serviceable alternative to the much more expensive Macromedia Flash. However, I often had to invest a lot of trial-and-error in trying to be more creative and efficient because there was no good reference source for it. The SWiSH forums were helpful, but also fairly time consuming. This long-awaited book solves all of my issues! It's really a great reference -- very well designed, complete, and full of useful step-by-step guidance on doing almost anything with the product. And...it's peppered with tips and techniques (in the form of full chapters!)from some of the top experts in the SWiSH community. It also has a companion site with even more info. I really can't think of any citicism, other that I wish it was even longer than its 700 pages. Nice job, folks!Official SWiSHmax Bible Overview
