Access 2003 Personal Trainer (Personal Trainer (O'Reilly)) ReviewMany typical power users tend to use Excel as a psuedo-database because Access is perceived to be much more difficult. O'Reilly's new book Access 2003 Personal Trainer by CustomGuide helps address that complexity.
Chapter List: The Fundamentals; Creating and Working with a Database; Finding, Filtering, and Formatting Data; Working with Tables and Fields; Creating Relational Databases; Working with Queries; Working with Forms; Working with Reports; Formatting Forms and Reports; Working with Macros; Advanced Topics; Index
The Personal Trainer series uses a comic book-style "superhero" motif as the overall theme. But even though the cover doesn't look all that serious, the content is very well done. Once you're into the chapters, the only hint at the theme is a cartoon face attached to a dialog bubble for the Quick Reference material. So if you're thinking the book isn't serious or doesn't have solid writing, give it a second glance. Each chapter is a series of lessons with objectives and a number of tasks. At the end, you get a lesson summary, a quiz to test your comprehension, and some homework to stretch your newly-obtained skills. And best of all, there's a CD in the book that has Access simulation software so you can do the training without necessarily having the full Access 2003 package installed wherever you're at. Definitely a big plus...
I personally thought the writer(s) did a great job of managing the balance between theory and practical knowledge. It's easy when you're an IT professional to get bogged down in all the relational database terms and concepts, whether something's in 2nd or 3rd normal form, and so forth. This book isn't going to make you ready to design the FBI's latest crime database (or maybe it will, since the professionals didn't do such a hot job either), but it will give you enough knowledge to catalog your wine cellar or track the books you've read. On top of that, you'll be able to build forms for data entry and generate reports to figure out what you've got or what you've done. Basically, this book can take you from information to knowledge.
This is a pretty good title, and one I'd definitely recommend for someone who wants to get some exposure to relational database systems...Access 2003 Personal Trainer (Personal Trainer (O'Reilly)) Overview

Access 2003 Bible ReviewFor the most part this book is very through on teaching you Access, however there is a lot of fluf in some of the instructions it walks you through. For example, everytime it walks you through steps on going to the properties screen of any object it will tell you step by step how to right click, how to scroll down to the properties and then left click on 'properties'. Anyone who needs this level of detail should probably be reading a 'Windows for dummies' book instead.
The actual content of the book has so far been fairly thorough as far as understanding Access. The information regarding database design is more or less satisfactory for getting you started working with access, but for a complete understanding of databases in general it leaves a bit to be desired.
For the Access content of the book I give it a 4/5 but looking at the book as a whole i have to take a whole point away because of the volumes of fluf i have to sift through to get to the meat and potatoes.Access 2003 Bible Overview

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Brief (New Perspectives (Thomson Course Technology)) ReviewI have just started an independent study course at my local technical college. This will be my second textbook from New Prospectives that I have used. The first was for Microsoft Word 2007. I am one of many people who have lost there job in the past year. I decided it was time to improve my computer skills and these textbooks were very easy to understand and learn from. The assignments at the end of the chapters were interesting and the instructions easy to follow. I would recommend them to anyone who needs to learn any of the Microsoft programs.

Using Microsoft Access 2010 ReviewI am an advanced MS Access user/programmer, so while this book turned out not to be useful for me, I am well qualified to review it for what it is - a solid book for people new to Access and relational databases in general.
The book covers all the bases and even discusses normalization, which is a method of optimizing the structure/layout of your tables for maximum efficiency. Believe me, I have seen rather large homegrown database applications built in Access that used a single table. That's a very poor practice for large applications. My point is that as you would expect, this book covers all the essentials in each area - enough to get your feet wet and then some. It also paves the way for more advanced studies in Access.
I have many books on Access and Allison Balter's advanced books are the ones I turn to more often than not. The quality work that she does is evident here, although as I said, it is for beginners.
There is a free web version of the book that supplements your learning with video and audio material.
If you're new to databases and you've decided to use Access 2010 - this is a good place to start.Using Microsoft Access 2010 Overview

Access Forms & Reports For Dummies ReviewFirst, it is important to realize what this book is not. It is not a complete Access reference book. It will not teach you database theory and all aspects of data normalization. It does not cover advanced techniques such as VBA programming, the ADO object model or using the Windows API.
So what do you get from this book? A fantastic introduction to developing forms, reports and queries. In the tradition of the Dummies series, the author gently guides the novice towards building expertise in this narrow but all important aspect of Microsoft Access. With a conversational style, each step in creating a report, form or query is clearly explained. Also, the reasons for creating a report or form, and the differences between the two are presented. Although the title doesn't mention queries, because they are integral to producing reports and forms, several chapters deal with queries. Finally, two chapters discuss enhancing queries with SQL and troubleshooting those queries when things go wrong.
In summary, by spending a few days with the author, via this book, a beginning Access programmer can quickly become adept at designing forms and generating reports.Access Forms & Reports For Dummies Overview

Access 2003 For Dummies ReviewI've taught database theory at university Master's level, used MySql in a
UNIX/Linux environment, and have a Ph.D. in computer science. I don't need to
learn SQL or how to program, but I did need to know how to get something done
with this MS Office product, and quickly. This book was a perfect fit. It's
not strong on VBA or other programming hooks, or what Microsoft calls database
projects, and it's no substitute for learning the fundamentals of database
design and use (though it does have some very good introductory material), it
is quite comprehensible and thorough as a tutorial, guidebook, and reference
on the user interface that is unique to MS Access. Access is a big
application and this is, appropriately, a big book. Again, it was just what I
needed. Regarding another reviewer's dislike of the cute jokes, it's really
not bad at all, a real relief compared to the otherwise excellent O'Reilly
`animal series' computer books.Access 2003 For Dummies Overview

Access 2010 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) ReviewHaving only a rudimentary knowledge of Microsoft Word in older versions, I bought Microsoft Office 2010. There were big changes so I bought two books, Microsoft Office 2010 all-in-one for dummies and this one on Access. I've never used Access but wanted to see if it could replace an ancient DOS database program we've used for decades in our businesses.
I wanted a book that wasn't intimidating and was quick to get me started. This one is a bit basic, but it is very clear and leads you through all the steps needed to set up a database. Because I have to work on this between deadlines, I haven't finished setting up my database yet, but I feel confident this book will provide all the information I need.
I'd recommend it for anyone just delving into Access 2010 for the first time.Access 2010 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) OverviewA friendly, step-by-step guide to the Microsoft Office database application
Access may be the least understood and most challenging application in the Microsoft Office suite. This guide is designed to help anyone who lacks experience in creating and managing a database learn to use Access 2010 quickly and easily.
In the classic For Dummies tradition, the book provides an education in Access, the interface, and the architecture of a database. It explains the process of building a database, linking information, sharing data, generating reports, and much more.
As the Microsoft Office database application, Access may be the least understood and most challenging part of the Office suite
Access 2010 For Dummies walks newcomers through building and using their first database
Covers linking information in a database, setting relationships, modeling data, and building tables
Explores how to extract data from Access and get specific answers, create forms, and export data in reports
A section for more experienced users looks at analyzing errors and creating an interface

Fully updated for the newest version, Access 2010 For Dummies gets new Access users up to speed and helps veterans get the most from the Office database application.
