Anime Studio: The Official Guide ReviewThis book by Kelly L Murdock is an extensive resource for both the novice and advanced Anime Studio user. The short, single-topic chapters are organized to make it easy for the reader to find information throughout the project workflow. Murdock uses simplified example files, included on the book's CD, to demonstrate each step of the production process.
Murdock begins with something that I haven't seen included in computer software books of late which is a history of Anime Studio. Next, he jumps right in to a discussion of the layout of the user interface, keyboard shortcuts and customizing the workspace. With that out of the way, he walks the reader through starting a new project, and opening and saving existing projects.
As with most animation and graphics programs, layers are used for structuring and organizing your project. Murdock thoroughly covers the basics of vector layers as well as blend modes and masking. Now you are ready to create the objects that you will eventually animate. He discusses aspects of vector drawing including freehand drawing, points, curves, regular shapes and built-in drawing scripts, a very nice feature of Anime Studio. Text is next on the agenda and Murdock covers adding text to your project and how to work with the text once it has been converted to curves and points.
In the next few chapters, Murdock reduces Anime Studio objects down to their primary elements which are points, curves, fills and outlines. He covers the basics such as selecting, deleting, editing and transforming each of these individual parts. Most of the color and effects applied to these primary elements are controlled through the Styles palette. You will learn how to apply color to outlines and fills as well as use brushes and special effects.
Now that Murdock has covered all the basics for creating objects or content in Anime Studio, its time to introduce animation. He starts with a discussion of camera motion and 3D space and moves on to cover bones and skeletal hierarchy which you will bind to your characters to control their movements. Once you can move your characters like a puppeteer, you will build a sequence of movements into an animation using keyframes, graphs and scripts within the Timeline palette.
Next, Murdock switches gears to discuss the Content Library and several ways to import content into your project such as movies, 3D objects, vector images from Illustrator and non-vector images from Photoshop. Finally, he discusses the Actions palette, the LUA scripting language and creating reuseable scripts.
You have several options for publishing your animation and Murdock discusses how to preview a render of your scene and how to export your animation in the Flash, AVI and QuickTime formats.

Anime Studio 6: The Official Guide ReviewI'm actually using Anime Studio 7 but there was apparently no book available for that version. Although it's sad that there's no way to know what's changed in version 7, I've gotten about half way through the book and have found that the book applies quite well to version 7 as far as the overall operation and use of the program. The included disc has example files for each chapter and the hands on approach to working the examples is a great way to learn. Until a version 7 book arrives this is probably going to be the best book available for learning this program.Anime Studio 6: The Official Guide Overview

Photoshop CS5 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) ReviewThis book is a very good introductory overview of the CS5 version of Photoshop. It is a wide overview of the program, aimed at a wide audience of users who are familiar with the program (or not); users who are photographers of different levels and/or designers (professional or otherwise). With a spectrum such as this, there is little choice but to only touch the surface of each program tool, feature, menu item, filter, procedure, technique, and so on. This book does so admirably.
It touches on almost every subject you might like to get an introductory explanation about, gives you the basic guidelines for use, what to do (and not), options, applicable settings and choices, and helpful illustrations or screen shots on every single page. It is a manual, not a review. It doesn't evaluate the features, only tells you how to use them.
The book probably assumes this is the first time you use Photoshop and that CS 5 is your first version. It doesn't treat "new CS 5" features separately, it simply takes you on a thorough and detailed tour of the current incarnation of Photoshop and, where something is new or changed, a yellow "new in CS 5" icon appears on the margin of the general narrative. This icon, is in addition to the usual iconography of the "for dummies" book like "warning," "tips," etc.
As a fairly competent Photoshop user for just over ten years but a first-time owner of the "Extended" version, I found his introduction to the features and capabilities of this version to be very helpful. The book is well indexed, so I had no difficulty in locating the particular new features I wanted to learn more about. In the process, I ended up reading and learning new things about old features. I found his method of turning a photo into a line drawing much better than the one I'd been using and his sections on using tablets and his top ten tips & tricks very interesting.
There is something for everyone here, which is both a plus and a minus. Whether you want to use Photoshop to make your photos the best they can be; or you want to work with text; or create special effects; or turn your photos into art or create art from scratch; start working with HDR or shooting in RAW; or perform any of the myriad functions of which Photoshop is capable this book will help you get started. It won't go into depth into any of them. Once you know what your needs are or what you want to learn more about, you should get a book which covers your particular needs in depth and detail.

Photoshop CS5 Bible (Wiley Desktop Editions) ReviewPhotoshop CS5 BibleAs a reference source, this book is very detailed. As a learning source this book lacks substance. Most people who would buy this book are probably an experienced photographer or graphic designer. So it is hard for me to fathom why this book was printed with black and white sample images that are printed so poorly that many are just black squares with no detail remaining.
There is a web site available that allows you to download a subset of the images in color, but whole chapters of images are omitted, including the very complex chapters on 3D graphic editing. Almost no image in these chapters are viewable.
If you buy the Photoshop CS5 Bible, be prepared for a useful but limited reference guide. Or better yet, wait for a more mature book to be made available.

Well, I wasn't in that boat. I had never used Photoshop at all, so I needed to learn from the ground up. If you are in the same spot I was, this is the book for you. It assumes you know nothing about the program and even goes so far as to show you how to launch it from the Programs menu, which I got a good chuckle out of, thinking "Hey!
