Office 2007: The Missing Manual ReviewI bought "Office 2007, The Missing Manual" in July 2007. I used it a little but found the 2007 MS Office System Plain & Simple to be a better book for our clients. The "Missing Manual" stayed on my bookshelf. Today, thinking I could get a better understanding of my problems with Mailings using a database from Outlook, I discovered that this book has absolutely no information on Mail Merge at all. In fact, "Mailings", one of the 7 tabs on the ribbon is not even indexed. You can find what limited information there is on "Mailings" under Printing envelopes and Printing labels. Ironically, on page 182 (about printing envelopes), the book states, "Most of the tools on the Mailings tab are for mail merge and mass mailings." If most of the tools under the tab are about mail merge, wouldn't it make sense to include some information about those items?
Save your money. There are better books with more information. If you need this kind of overview of the different features in MS Office 2007 -- the "Plain and Simple" book is better. If you need more detailed information, this is not the book for you.Office 2007: The Missing Manual Overview

Microsoft Office 2007 Simplified ReviewI had to purchase this for a class and usually I would put it up for sale after, but this is one to keep.
It's a great refrence book. It reads like a child's first dictionary. Lots of pictures and step-by-step detailed information. So easy to read that a five year old could use it. It will never go out of use because it's very basic. Great for beginners and advance users.Microsoft Office 2007 Simplified Overview

2007 Microsoft® Office System Plain & Simple ReviewThis book is well laid out and easy to understand. The step by step, visual format makes it easy for you to quickly complete topics without guesswork - it shows you all of the steps you need to take! Excellent as a manual or reference book, generally you can go directly to a topic and learn all that you need to know about that topic without having to read previous sections.
The book starts off by covering the features common to all Office 2007 programs - extremely useful to quickly familiarise you to the general workings of any Office 2007 program. Each of the following chapters then focuses on an individual Office 2007 program(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access).

Professional Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewAs you can tell from the title of this review, I am a developer at heart, and as well all know, most developers generally look down upon SPD. However, SPD is a tool, and for certain things, a useful tool. It belongs in the toolbox of every SP professional. If you don't use SPD for the things it is good for, then you are missing out. That said, if you need to get to know SPD and what it can do, then this is the book you want.
I like the way the beginning of the book is organized (SharePoint - from the perspective of different user types) because it breaks the basics down in a way that keeps things segmented nicely. I can skip the whole "from a user's perspective" parts as I don't need that stuff. It also helps me see things "from the other side" - that is, not a developer's point of view.
From there, it starts to get into functionality of SPD. It starts with Look and Feel - the bane of every developer's existence - and moves into applications without programming and probably the best coverage I have seen anywhere of programming SharePoint from the client-side (with Javascript and WPSC). I do find it interesting that a book on SPD covers some Visual Studio topics - creating workflow elements and webparts. While I don't think the coverage of either topic is going to make someone an expert at either task, it at least will get them comfortable with what is involved. My only concern is that people will feel like this coverage is sufficient and attempt to move into these more traditional developer roles insufficiently prepared. There is a LOT more to learn before you get there and can play in that speace effectively.
If I had to pick one negative about the book, I would have to say it would be in its coverage of SPD workflows. I fully realize that I have a very strong bias *against* SPD workflows, but it is because I have seen too many problems caused by misuse. I wish that the book spent more than a page and a half cautioning people against using SPD workflows and building Rube Goldberg contraptions just to get around limitations of the product. In some ways it seems like the book encourages this risky behavior and I think that is dangerous. In any event, there are a lot of pitfalls and a brief coverage of them is insufficient.
All in all, a great book for learning SPD - even for a dumb developer like me :-). It's on the shelf right next to my desk alongside my other SharePoint books. I use it often for help with learning this tool (SPD) and how to use it more effectively.Professional Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewWith Professional Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007, you can master all aspects of using Share Point Designer in an Enterprise environment to enhance Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies. Review key integration points, how to use CSS editing tools to create and modify SharePoint themes, how to supplement SharePoint Designer functionality by using Microsoft Visual Studio, and how to create a rich interactive experience. If you need to connect SharePoint with other enterprise resources or create components to integrate into the SharePoint framework, this book will show you how to accomplish these tasks.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Office 2010 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) ReviewThis is a handy book for anyone who is completely new to MS Office and needs to grasp it fast. Based on the colors and graphics I'd say it's targeted to young audience/students (high-school, 1st year college). But still handy for anyone who is new to MS Office.
The book consists of 23 chapters, organized in 8 parts:
Part1 - Office features (4 chapters)
Part2 - Word (4 chapters)
Part3 - Excel (4 chapters)
Part4 - Powerpoint (3 chapters)
Part5 - Access (2 chapters)
Part6 - Outlook (2 chapters)
Part7 - Publisher (2 chapters)
Part8 - One note (2 chapters)
Each chapter presents the tasks and functionality in a visually way. This is done by presenting screenshots, with step by step instructions on how to do a certain task, on the side of the screen shot. Every 2 (opponent) pages presents a particular task in this way. For someone completely new to MS Office this is like sitting at your computer and having a personal instructor guiding you step by step.
If you are already familiar with MS Office 2003 or 2007, you may not need this book. You probably be able to use MS office 2010 without it. MS Office 2010 will feel very familiar to you, and you probably just need some time to learn your way around. Pretty soon you'll be up to what you were doing in 2003 and/or 2007. This book also does not particularly show what's new in 2010 compared to 2007. It does mention a few but does not particularly point them out. So you'd probably find this in the MS Office 2010 tutorial it self (or the help function). Still, this book would be handy as a guideline, in case you would want to reassure yourself that you are not overlooking anything or as a reference book. You would go very fast through it. In any case, it gives a good overall picture of MS Office 2010.
There are a few things I miss in this book.
One is something about the history/evolution of MS Office up to this most recent 2010 version. I also miss information on what for type of OS you need for MS Office 2010. And I miss indications to what is new in 2010 that was not available in 2003 or 2007. There are also no questions or specific projects with the chapters. Instructors might have appreciated questions and/or projects with each chapter with which they could assess students.
All by all, this is a very handy book, to anyone new to MS Office, (especially young readers), that needs to grasp MS Office 2010 in a very fast way.
Ps. If you liked this book, you might like Web 2.0: Concepts and Applications (Shelly Cashman) too. This book introduces students to the Web 2.0. concepts. It has more text, but is also very visual with lots of screenshots and examples.Teach Yourself VISUALLY Office 2010 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) Overview

Office 2010 Simplified ReviewI am a advocate user of Microsoft Office. Just recently upgraded from 2003 to 2010. I was really confused the first day I start using 2010, the ribbon was sorta of overwhelming. So i went and got a copy of this book from the library and boy am I glad I did. I love the pictures and the step by step instructions. Learned so much the first day I picked it up, like how to view multiple screens and office live workspace. Now I am buying the book off of Amazon to continue learning but have it as a reference book later. Get this book I promise you want be disappointed.Office 2010 Simplified Overview

Working with Microsoft Dynamics(TM) CRM 4.0 ReviewThis is a very solid book in regards to explaining and showing how to work with the application from a technical standpoint. I think of it as a good handbook for the IT user or power user that wants to know how to setup or administer MS/Dynamics CRM 4.0. I was hoping for more of the business side but the authors state up front that this book is not built around what to do with Microsoft CRM. It's not a book about strategy and how to build your business using Microsoft CRM - rather, it is squarely intended for a technical user that is concerned with setting up and administering the application. For this purpose it is a valuable book to have on your shelf as a constant source of pragmatic expertise.Working with Microsoft Dynamics(TM) CRM 4.0 Overview
