Getting Started with Camera Raw: How to make better pictures using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements (2nd Edition) ReviewIf you're just starting out using Camera Raw in Photoshop or Elements I think this is a great book to start with. If you are, however, fairly experienced, it probably is going to help you only nominally. I think the layout of the book is very nice and there is very little "fluff". I think the problem some of the reviewers have with this book is that it wasn't matched with their experience level. I personally feel this is a well done book even for intermediate users.Getting Started with Camera Raw: How to make better pictures using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements (2nd Edition) Overview

Adobe Lightroom 2 - The Missing FAQ: Real Answers to Real Questions asked by Lightroom users ReviewWhen I first heard there was an FAQ about Lightroom in the works, I had my doubts. I have seen too many books that claimed to be Frequently Asked Questions that were in fact a collection of tips reverse-engineered into a question format. As a Lightroom author myself I spend a share of my time in the Adobe Lightroom User-to-User forum answering questions all the while trying to get a feel for the kinds of questions people have about Lightroom so I can ensure the topic is covered in my book. I always thought it would be great if someone would distill all of the questions that are posted along with the correct answers and organize them into a book. This is exactly what the author has done. She has managed to collect and organize them into a single document. These real questions that are actually asked frequently (what a concept) are organized in such a way as to be easy to find. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. I just finished a 300+ page book on Lightroom 2 and I still find myself going though my copy of her book to refresh my memory on how something is supposed to work.Adobe Lightroom 2 - The Missing FAQ: Real Answers to Real Questions asked by Lightroom users Overview

Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS3 ReviewThis book should be reviewed in the context of three key directions in which the Creative Suite developers have been moving digital imaging over the past few years: workflow and process integration, major development of the raw processing pipeline and the creation of many more user-friendly and powerful tools which directly respond to the needs of photographers. To date, the culmination of these related initiatives is the production of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw 4.x and Adobe Bridge 2.x. The important new features of these applications are so extensive that no book dealing with previous versions of Camera Raw and Bridge will give users adequate instruction and advice about how best to use them.
This leads to the question of who should be using these programs, and therefore who should be reading this book. Anyone who wishes to maximize the quality of their photographs and have the fullest possible control over doing so should use a camera giving them "raw" files, Adobe Photoshop and Camera Raw for converting those raw files into high quality photographs, and this book to learn how to master and manage Camera Raw, Bridge and the DNG open-source raw file format.
There is, however, much more to this book than editing the appearance of photographs, as fundamentally important as that is. Reflecting the contemporary evolution of these programs, the book has three major areas of emphasis, these being a primer on the nature of a digital image and a raw file (very useful for understanding what one is working with and why some kinds of editing operations are preferable to others), instruction on how best to use Camera Raw for getting the most out of the images one has captured, and workflow (i.e. "what to do when") - emphasizing and explaining not only an orderly way of working within the Camera Raw module itself, but also how to get optimal efficiency in organizing, identifying and processing ones' images using the integrative features of Bridge, Camera Raw, and Photoshop. This structure of the book makes perfect sense given the intended integration of these applications to facilitate efficient and effective workflow.
Hence Chapters 1 and 2 provide a compact and highly readable primer on the anatomy of a digital image and a raw file and basically how Camera Raw works. If you weren't totally convinced before you bought the book why you should be working as much as possible with raw files rather than JPEGs, these two chapters will make that issue will go away.
Chapter 3 provides a handy integrative overview of how Camera Raw, Bridge, Photoshop and DNG all hang together as a system. The remainder of the book is devoted to a very detailed and comprehensive explanation of when and how to use these tools.
Chapters 4 and 5 explain the Camera Raw controls in depth - which is really important, because the last I counted there are at least 84 of them that could be independently combined in infinite ways to produce the image in the eye of the user's mind (and this excludes DNG creation and camera calibration also explained here in depth). The book explains what each of these tools do, how to use them, and most instructively, in Chapter 5, the authors present a very well selected variety of imaging situations we would all encounter, showing firstly how to evaluate what the images need done to them. Then they demonstrate in detail the individual edits performed to improve sharpness, contrast and color as appropriate to the objectives of the edits. Once you've completed reading this chapter you will have a very solid knowledge base from which to gain experience using this program to greatest advantage on your own images. I've processed about 1600 images in Camera Raw and I've run across every situation the authors cover here. I think they've done an excellent job in terms of both correct treatment of their sample images and the exposition of how to do it. It's clear, well illustrated, detailed and accurate.
That takes us to page 201, and Chapters 6 to 9 inclusive. As far as I know, you won't find a more convenient, comprehensive and detailed treatment of how to work with Adobe Bridge and Camera Raw, developing efficient workflows for handling files, folders, collections, metadata and process automation. For busy people needing to organize, recall and process large numbers of images quickly and efficiently, there is a wealth of indispensable instruction here covering the many features in these programs which make this possible.
Having read the book, I'm now keeping it beside my keyboard. It will serve as the most useful hands-on reference work that I own on Camera Raw, Bridge and DNG. It is with deep regret that Bruce Fraser is no longer with us to celebrate the accomplishment of this book, but we can take comfort in the fact that Jeff Schewe has picked up the torch, run with it and brought to fruition a remarkable piece of work which makes a really important contribution to our knowledge of digital imaging.

Printing with Adobe Photoshop CS4 ReviewThis book tries to cover a lot of ground - more than it should. Because of this, sections are brief and often poorly explained. There are many sections at the beginning that seem completely extraneous to this topic. Of course taking a good photo is important to a good print but that isn't the focus here.
It is clear the author knows his subject well but this books need a good editor. There are no transitions in the text and I often found myself turning the page in anticipation of an in depth explanation only to find a new chapter starting instead.
More frustrating though was that the explanatory screenshots and photos are often poorly placed without captions and it is impossible to figure out which one goes with the explanation. As mentioned before, the screenshots are too small to read. Also, I found the discussions of plug-ins and third party software completely extraneous to this text.
All that being said, when I finally got to the sections that discuss printing, they were excellent. I really enjoyed the sections on soft proofing and gamut, along with the print output functions. The creative print styles and edges chapters were very interesting.
I did learn several things from this text. It will stay as a reference on my shelf. However, less breadth and more depth on the chosen topic would have made a more useful text.Printing with Adobe Photoshop CS4 Overview

Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS4 ReviewFirst off, it is worth noting the organization and intent of this book is very close to that of the edition for CS3 so reviews of the CS3 version may be of use to you even though this newer edition of course contains lots of new material related to the new features of ACR 5.2.
Second, note I said ACR 5.2 above. 5.2 was a bit unusual for Adobe in that it actually introduced some very important new features over 5.1 rather than just new camera profiles. Fortunately publication of this book was held until 5.2 was released so that these new features could be covered here.
Third, one should very much be aware that really only a portion of the book is specifically dedicated to the Camera RAW controls and how to use them (specifically Chapters 4 and 5). The earlier parts of the book mostly focus on RAW shooting and conversion in general and the later parts of the book focus on a work flow using Camera RAW and Bridge. This seems appropriate since discussing the concepts of RAW shooting in general is applicable to Camera RAW and many photographers use Camera RAW primarily because it fits into a Photoshop based workflow so smoothly. That said, do yourself a favor and use the look inside feature on this book to examine the contents and get an understanding of how much of the book is dedicated to these "ancillary" topics! If you already know about RAW and shoot it extensively then chapters 1-3 may be of limited interest to you. If you don't process so many photos that workflow is an issue for you or you already have a workflow that you feel is so mature you don't need any more ideas or input then the later part of the book might not be of interest to you.
With those qualifiers out of the way I can easily give this book five stars. Written by someone "on the inside" of the development of ACR and with a structure that still follows the now departed Bruce Fraser's previous excellent work there is little to find fault with. All of the features of ACR are thoroughly covered and great examples of their use are given. ACR itself has come along way to now being an incredibly full featured converter, perhaps one of the most feature laden in the market, and like other Adobe products benefits greatly from third party documents such as this book.
Again, perhaps my only reservation is that so much of the book is not about ACR itself and not everyone may find the related information useful. That said, it is hard to call this "bonus" material a fault since the information on ACR itself is complete and comprehensive.Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS4 Overview

The Complete Raw Workflow Guide: How to get the most from your raw images in Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Elements ReviewI my humble opinion, this is the best book on understanding Camera Raw processing and gaining the hands on experience in a user friendly way.
Why? The book is written in plain straight forward English, with plenty of screen shots pertaining to the application interfaces. The layout of the book is very user friendly. Unlike many other instructional books, the pictures here are large enough to easily see all the details. The book is divided logically into independent chapters regarding both the hands on process and the more in detail background information. You can focus on those chapters you are interested in, or just read the book from A to Z.
I checked and bought several books on this subject and The Complete Raw Workflow Guide is clearly the winner!

Camera RAW 101: Better Photos with Photoshop, Elements, and Lightroom ReviewThe simple truth is that there are many photographers out there with the capability to shoot RAW but are still shooting JPEG. It's mostly because of the fear that shooting in RAW format will increase their already hectic workflow. Then there's the photographers that just don't really get how much of a difference in flexibility and capability that shooting in RAW can have on the outcome of a digital photograph. If you fall into either of these camps then this book may be just the ticket you need to getting the most out of your images.
No, it's not for everyone. You're really not going to learn much if you already have a solid RAW work-flow, although there were a couple tricks and tips I did pick up that I either didn't know or had forgotten about.
This isn't about how experienced you are as a photographer either, it's about how knowledgeable you are about your work-flow. That's what's important. The better and faster you are at getting your images from your camera to final output the more time you'll spend behind the lens instead of in front of a computer monitor.
While you can get much of this information around the Internet I've always found it much handier to have a book that will take you step by step and to have access to as a reference when it comes to software.
I think our author does a fine job of explaining and showing the capabilities found in Adobe Elements, Photoshop, and Lightroom as RAW work-flow software programs. A pretty good book to get if you aren't already shooting in RAW.Camera RAW 101: Better Photos with Photoshop, Elements, and Lightroom Overview

Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book ReviewPhotoshop CS5 For Nature Photographers - A Workshop in a Book: Ellen and Josh Anon are back with a new edition of the acclaimed Photoshop for Nature Photographers book. The new version replaces the accompanying DVD with a web site that includes the content to practice the techniques. I find this much more convenient than a DVD accompaniment. I find the new book to be a significant improvement from the already excellent older books. Not only do they cover all of the new functions in Photoshop of interest to Nature Photographers, they have also enhanced some of the older sections and have beefed up the sections for Photoshop Elements users. Photoshop CS5 no longer ships with a tutorial on the new functions as it did with previous versions, so a book like this is even more essential than before and it becomes the defacto User Manual for me when I want to look up a function that maybe I haven't used in a while, learn more about new functionality such as HDR Pro, or just brush up as I often like to do.
As with previous versions, the book follows a photo workflow by teaching you the basics of digital capture first, followed by Bridge, the first place you interact with images on your computer; then on to Adobe Camera Raw, followed by Photoshop in depth. Detailed setup instructions for the many different Preference sections in the different modules that make up Photoshop CS5 are included. Unfortunately this book was published before ACR 6.1 was released which includes lens profiles. However the book does cover the Lens Correction filter which utilizes identical technology so you can just apply your learning from that section of the book to the new ACR 6.1. The in depth Photoshop sections take you step by step through almost anything you would ever want to do. I found the section on the new Refine Edge command extremely useful since this is a very powerful new function but it is a case of a single equation in many unknowns. The Anon's guide the reader through how to best use this tool to make truly excellent selections previously not possible in older versions of Photoshop. I felt the discussion on the new Content Aware Fill to very balanced. Many things I have read make it sound almost like a panacea which, in my own experience, it is not. Ellen and Josh clearly indicate it's shortcomings and the additional work required after using the tool to make your selection perfect. I also found the section on HDR Pro extremely useful and following the steps will even allow the HDR novice, to produce some very nice HDR images. Beyond the normal adjustments one makes to images, the book also tackles the more complex subjects such as Composites, creative Black and White, Filters, Multiple Exposures, and an enjoyable section on painterly mages that gave me some new ideas to try. Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers concludes with a chapter on how to get the best output and a Tie Savers chapter which tackles some major time saver functions.
Throughout, the book, many of the images have been upgraded including many stunning new photos taken by the authors themselves. Additionally short technique articles from notable photographers including George Lepp, Joe McDonald, Arthur Morris, John Shaw and more are included.
My only complaint is that the index of the book is not as effective as it could be. As an example, I wanted to find HDR Pro when I first got the book. The index does not have an entry for this but does have one for HDR imaging. It takes you to a single page, in the middle of a very complete multi page section on HDR Pro. It doesn't even take you to the first page of that section. I found on several occasions where the index got me close but missed by a little bit. The eBook version would not have this problem since most eReaders offer content aware search.
List price or Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers is $49.99 however the paper version can be had at Amazon and Barnes and Noble for $30 to $35 and the eBook version is below $30. For that, you get nearly 500 pages of jam packed with easy to understand and easy to apply information about CS5. The eBook version is already available through the Kindle store at Amazon but is not available on iBooks. I downloaded the free sample which includes all of the preliminaries and the first chapter using the Kindle App on my iPad. The formatting of some of the pages is strange when viewing in horizontal mode but it all clears up in vertical mode. This book would definitely be better in iBooks or the Barnes and Noble reader on the iPad than it is using the Kindle reader as both of those are better designed for the iPad.
One always wonders if a new version of a book that one already owns is worth the money. This book provides, in one place, all of the information to use the new tools in Photoshop CS5 as well as providing an excellent manual for all of the other functions that a Nature Photographer is likely to use. In addition to covering the new areas that were introduced into Photoshop with the release of CS5, many of the functions that were new to CS4 are now covered more thoroughly. In this case, I must conclude that it is worth purchasing the new version of Photoshop for Nature Photographers as it is a much more complete reference than it has ever been in the past.
