Introduction to Statistical Quality Control ReviewDoug Montgomery is an excellent instructor and author. I have taken short courses from him. He teaches statistics in the Engineering School at Arizona State. He is known for his books on engineering statistics and has written some excellent texts on design of experiments, response surface methodology, linear regression and quality control. He is well acquainted with the Deming philosophy for quality , Taguchi designs and the six sigma concept. This book on statistical quality control introduces control chart methods and all the other tools of statistical quality control with the expertise that few have.
The book is very accessible to statisticians engineers and others with good mathematical backgrounds but not necessarily strong trtaining in statistics. A virtue of Montgomery in all the books he has authored or coauthored is the clarity of presentation and the ability to reach a wide audience of non-statisticians.Introduction to Statistical Quality Control Overview

Sociology (13th Edition) ReviewAs a Sociology professor I have used and reviewed dozens of introductory sociology textbooks over the years, and Macionis Sociology is the one I always come back to. Although it is not perfect, it is simply one of the best. Why? Here are the major reasons:

The Photographer's Guide to Photoshop ReviewIn my experience, when it comes to Adobe software, there are "print" people (who are most comfortable with PageMaker and InDesign) and there are "image" people (who are happiest using Photoshop). I'm one of the former and while most layout programs seem perfectly intuitive to me, I've had to struggle to make sense of the last few versions of Photoshop. Thomas is a photographer (rather than a printer) but he seems to be entirely a self-taught techie, as am I; he's obviously old enough to have learned his photography long before there were personal computers. He had to work at this stuff to figure things out, and he's pretty good at passing on the results of that learning process to the reader. There's only a brief introduction on the theoretical basics -- pixels and equipment choices, bitmaps vs. vectors, RGB vs. CYMK, and so on. After that, he sticks pretty much to explaining in plain language what the principal groups of Photoshop tools are for (the names Adobe gives them are not always intuitive), how to carry out basic processes (like masking and selecting), and how to avoid making dreadful mistakes. The section on the Pen Tool is less well done, though, because he demonstrates how a Bezier system works without ever explaining *why* it works; he seems to think just experimenting with it will be sufficient. And maybe he's right. His discussion of layers and channels, though, is quite good. The book is crammed with well-rendered photos, usually shown in various stages of editing and modification. This is not a reference manual, and it's certainly far from being the only Photoshop book you will ever need, but it's an excellent place to start.The Photographer's Guide to Photoshop Overview

Advanced Digital Black and White Photography ReviewI am a technical book addict. While I have only had this book 5 days, it has already paid for itself in improvement of my BW work. It is finely crafted, and to the point. It draws you in and it delivers for real world artists.
As a writer, I am struck by how well this book is structured and written, and the very fine layout of illustrations and methods. When you encounter an excellent technical book and find yourself immersed in it, sometimes you fail to notice the ease that essential information is being conveyed to you. Then suddenly it hits you, wow!, this is the gold standard. This is one of those books. It covers historical BW methods up to the present version of Photoshop, and then provides an outstanding and practical work flow in CS3. By understanding what has gone before, you understand better how CS3 takes BW to another level.
The book is written by a person who is technically competent, a fine writer, and a BW artist. He understands how to frame the issues, and pragmatically deal with accessing the Photoshop tools needed in real world work flow. It is easy to write a huge book that is just a grocery list of features. It is very difficult to write a book like this that is supremely competent, focused, concise, and outlines strategies of interest to real world working artists. I rate it as one of the finest books I have ever read on using software. If there are any other books written by this author, I will buy them on strength of this one.
I would say that someone with basic photoshop skills can easily use this book. If you lack these skills, I think this book would point you to what you need to learn. One of the challenges of learning photoshop is figuring what you need to know and what to ignore. This book finds that focus and is obviously written by a working artist. It is a tool unlike the bloated books that I own, that mostly collect dust and are consulted grudingly. Buy it, you will be pleasantly surprized.

ZBrush 4 Sculpting for Games: Beginner's Guide ReviewI recently bought this book to help me with a 3D character modeling class for school. Even though this says it's for Game Modeling it's an excellent beginner modeling book for using ZBrush and doesn't necessarily have to be applied to only game model building. The concepts can be applied to other modeling scenarios.
The author describes everything in a way that is super simple in such a way that even if you opened ZBrush for the first time you'd be able to get around in there with the help of this book.
There are references with step-by-step instructions with screen shots on how to use the tools and even lists the short cuts (which is extremely helpful in any 3D modeling program). Like other people have said, the images are not in color but you get the general idea. I found that when doing the exercises in the book with the program open it's much better than trying to read the book by itself. Using Microsoft Visio 2010 ReviewFull Disclosure: I am an acquaintance of the author and indeed even mentioned on page 323. Take that into account when reading this review.
My background: I have used Visio extensively for 10 years and continue use it *every day* in my work at Microsoft. My knowledge of this application is in the areas of end-user productivity, making visually-compelling diagrams, and driving the application via code (C#, IronPython, VBA, etc.).
Summary:
This book is the only resource either in print or online that I feel clearly communicates to a *normal person* how to use Visio's features and provides the that only someone who deeply uses the application can provide.
A strength of this book is that it will *save you time*. It provides in one place the hard-won knowledge that would otherwise only be available through much trial-and-error and confusion. For example consider section 6.2. This section describes how to quickly format a table of boxes. Creating a table the standard way would require much dragging and dropping of shapes and tedious formatting and re-typing. Section 6.2 shows how to use to quickly do the equivalent in much less time and in the process you'll learn things that will make you more productive with all of your other diagrams. This is just one tiny example. The book has many similar sections that describe a variety of situations you'll encounter in your day-to-day use of Visio.
What surprised me about this book is that I even though I am considered an "expert" user of Visio in Microsoft, I still found a lot to learn in the book. The author's knowledge about the application is truly deep. My work in the past few years has naturally been with Visio 2007 and so I found book was useful in discovering and understanding the new features in Visio 2010.
Printed versus Kindle version: I own both but the Kindle version is the one I use on an iPad2 and via Amazon's Kindle Cloud Reader. For me, there's no point bringing the physical book around when I always can access it electronically. Another advantage of the Kindle version is that the screenshots are in color (when viewed through a color-enabled Kindle device), while the printed version has everything in grayscale.

Mastering Celtx ReviewCeltx is an often misunderstood program mainly because it's free and many associate free with awful.
Truth be known it's a program that is nearly equivalent to expensive varieties such as Final Draft. Not only can you do screenplays but comic book layouts, scene designs and even use the program as a note taker if you desire.
This book is nearly 340 pages of concise and step-by-step tutorials on how to use this program and not get lost. I also found it refreshing that it points readers to other sources just in case this book doesn't cover a topic. I also like the fact that it's full of illustrations to show what the author is discussing. Many books of this style assume the reader has a working knowledge of a program and then dive off into some hinterland from which no one returns.
One recommendation I would make is to redesign the book as a spiral bound edition. Several times I had to put the book down to review progress on my computer and then got interrupted or lost my train of thought at which point I had to pick the book back up. Spiral binding would solve that problem (hopefully).
Of note, Amazon has two hardbound versions of this book and both are identical but the one posted with the author's name is cheaper than the one with the publisher's name in the title. Someone made a little goof there.
If you're new to Celtx or are just interested I'd definitely recommend this book. So, why the drop in a star? Mainly for what appears to be filler in the beginning to fluff out the page count. A history of computers really sticks out as misplaced in a book discussing one specific program.Mastering Celtx OverviewUntil recently, available screenwriting tools--built around traditional discrete roles and tethered to paper output--have struggled to keep up with the rapid changes in industry practices and needs. I would also recommend this book to small business owners, or marketing managers as it will give them a complete understanding of the whole development process so they can intelligently discuss their next web project with prospective designers without their eyes glazing over from lack of knowledge. Finally, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone else, who, maybe just wants to start a blog, or make a webpage, or learn how to use stylesheets or javascript in an already existing website -- this is the book for you because you will accomplish that in just a chapter or two and come out ahead with a great reference manual to boot.Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (English and English Edition) Overview

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Mac OS X Lion (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) ReviewIf you've never used a computer before, this book should be perfect for you. If you've never used a Mac before, it will be very good. If you've used early Mac operating systems, but not OS X, it will still be quite good. If you already know earlier versions of OS X very well, you won't find a lot here to help you. There is no section that summarizes changes from earlier versions. There is no consistent identification of OS or app features that are new with Lion. This book is generally about OS X, and it is not an in-depth treatment. If you want in-depth, get the Portable Genius book (which was not out for Lion when I did this review). Most of the book's space is devoted to the apps included with the OS. There are some exceptions, such as the page on Mission Control, which is new to Lion. There is also a very nice treatment of file sharing and printer sharing. On the other hand, there's a whole page on how to save a document!
So why in the world did I give it four stars? Even though I've been working with computers, including software development, since the days when a single computer filled a small room, I'm relatively new to Macs. And this book does do a creditable job of an overview of the OS and the apps. Yes, it's very "Dick and Jane." You have to try not to be offended when it tells you things that any near-computer-illiterate would know. You have to scan each page looking for nuggets. The nuggets are there ... they really are. They are easy to find, because a huge amount of effort has gone into creating a good visual presentation. If you are not familiar with an app, you can go through the appropriate section of the book in just a few seconds and save yourself some trial and error.
In summary, the book is well organized and designed to make information easy to find and to absorb. If you're computer literate enough to be reading this review, I can't imagine how you could find anything in the book that would be too difficult for you. It is a simple book, but that is partly because the author does a good job of simplifying. The book falls right in line with Apple's own philosophy of simplicity. Even so, this is not necessarily a book for the simple.

Excel for Dummies ReviewI recently had to use Excel in a way that I had never done before. Sometimes the "help" feature on Excel doesn't seem to help very much, so I decided to borrow this book from the library so I could look up my questions as I did the new tasks.
What I discovered first was that the index isn't very complete. Some of the answers I needed could be found by using the index, but most of them required me to read the book from front to back. When I checked to see if the sections I needed were in the index, I found they were not.
The second problem I had was that the terms used in the text were hard to track down, so even if a section was easy to find from the index some of the information was unintelligible to me.
So I went back and read the whole book, and followed it quite easily.
I didn't like the examples too much. They were pretty juvenile.
I then compared this book to the Excel Bible which I had used recently for a similar purpose. I found the Excel Bible was much easier to use for reference, contained a lot more information, spelled out more ways to get the same tasks done and wasn't sound bound up in terminology.
If you want to get past doing only very simple tasks on Excel, you should plan to graduate to the Excel Bible. If you are confidence that you can read and understand new subjects, you can probably start with that book.Excel for Dummies Overview

Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide To Formatting Books For The Amazon Kindle ReviewFor the prospective Kindle author who is somewhat more advanced in the field of computers in general and HTML coding in particular, this is an excellent guide for you. Joshua Tallent is obviously far more the mathematician and programming nerd than is the average POD author who just wants to cash in from Kindle sales. If you just want to convert the Word document version of your Mr. Average Novel into DTP, then you have several options that may be more efficient for you than following the instructions contained in this book. These options include, in no particular order of significance: uploading your book directly from Word into the Amazon DTP system; running your document through the Smashwords Meatgrinder; downloading and utilizing Mobipocket Creator; or paying Joshua Tallent directly to format your book perfectly for you, a service he offers from his website. If you have a very complex book containing varied text layout or a lot of photos or other graphics, and you want it all to look as perfect as possible in the Kindle version, then hiring Mr. Tallent's services is probably your best bet. If you and/or your book fall between the cracks of some of these scenarios, then Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide by Michael R. Hicks may be the best solution. If you are at least somewhat proficient in HTML and you want to do it all yourself, then Joshua Tallent's Kindle Formatting is an excellent, detailed guide.
Is Joshua's thin book worth $20 to you, or $10 if you have a Kindle? If you barely understood how to send your simple Word document to iUniverse, letting them design your cover while you contributed very little to your book's design, then Kindle Formatting probably offers a lot more than you care to know. If you are somewhat more experienced, particularly with HTML programming, and you do not want to pay Joshua directly to do the job for you, but you want to produce a DTP version of your work that is somewhat more perfect than the result offered by the simpler methods, this will be money extremely well spent. Joshua will show you all the little HTML coding tricks to make your Kindle book look like an escapee from your local Barnes & Noble. If you own a Kindle, you can get even more benefit from Joshua's book because you can see the details of your efforts in perfect translation. One of my favorite issues covered in Kindle Formatting is that Joshua explains in text and screenshots actual differences between the Kindle and the Kindle 2. The book was released prior to the DX: maybe Joshua will update the material at some time in the future?
Joshua Tallent's Kindle Formatting will take the experienced author exactly where he wants to go. The book has two simple weaknesses. There are some obvious proofreading errors contained within the straight text portions of the book. They do not detract from the reader's comprehension of the material, but for this price for such a short book, I would expect a level nearer perfection. Also for this price, I think the author could have included a lot more rudimentary material to aid the lesser computer nerd in his project of formatting his book for the Kindle. With these two caveats in mind, I can wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Tallent's book to advanced users. If HTML programming is beyond your scope, you might be better served by Mr. Hicks' book.

Working with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 ReviewThis book covers fairly exhaustively all the basic aspects of CRM 2011 customization -- forms, solutions, workflows, dashboards, etc. However, I would definitely NOT recommend it to anyone who's worked with previous versions, who's already gone through the 2011 SDK documentation and the numerous CRM-related blogs out there. There is nothing about plug-ins, scripts, VS integration, so it's clearly not targeted at developers. In other words: don't buy this book if you're wondering whether to use early-bound or late-bound entities in your code.
To sum it up, the book does a good job of showing how customizable MS CRM is out of the box, without writing a single line of code; it doesn't even start to delve into the issues a CRM 4 developer would ask himself when starting up with CRM 2011.
It just seems odd to write a whole book about customizations without any chapter on code (be it client-side or on the server) -- I can't think of any customized CRM project that hasn't required custom code.
Hopefully, there's a "Programming CRM 2011" title in the works at MS Press...
