Teach Yourself VISUALLY Office 2010 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) ReviewThis is a handy book for anyone who is completely new to MS Office and needs to grasp it fast. Based on the colors and graphics I'd say it's targeted to young audience/students (high-school, 1st year college). But still handy for anyone who is new to MS Office.The book consists of 23 chapters, organized in 8 parts:
Part1 - Office features (4 chapters)
Part2 - Word (4 chapters)
Part3 - Excel (4 chapters)
Part4 - Powerpoint (3 chapters)
Part5 - Access (2 chapters)
Part6 - Outlook (2 chapters)
Part7 - Publisher (2 chapters)
Part8 - One note (2 chapters)
Each chapter presents the tasks and functionality in a visually way. This is done by presenting screenshots, with step by step instructions on how to do a certain task, on the side of the screen shot. Every 2 (opponent) pages presents a particular task in this way. For someone completely new to MS Office this is like sitting at your computer and having a personal instructor guiding you step by step.
If you are already familiar with MS Office 2003 or 2007, you may not need this book. You probably be able to use MS office 2010 without it. MS Office 2010 will feel very familiar to you, and you probably just need some time to learn your way around. Pretty soon you'll be up to what you were doing in 2003 and/or 2007. This book also does not particularly show what's new in 2010 compared to 2007. It does mention a few but does not particularly point them out. So you'd probably find this in the MS Office 2010 tutorial it self (or the help function). Still, this book would be handy as a guideline, in case you would want to reassure yourself that you are not overlooking anything or as a reference book. You would go very fast through it. In any case, it gives a good overall picture of MS Office 2010.
There are a few things I miss in this book.
One is something about the history/evolution of MS Office up to this most recent 2010 version. I also miss information on what for type of OS you need for MS Office 2010. And I miss indications to what is new in 2010 that was not available in 2003 or 2007. There are also no questions or specific projects with the chapters. Instructors might have appreciated questions and/or projects with each chapter with which they could assess students.
All by all, this is a very handy book, to anyone new to MS Office, (especially young readers), that needs to grasp MS Office 2010 in a very fast way.
