Microsoft Office Word 2010 QuickSteps ReviewI too have liked the Missing Manuals, but this book is very succinct and graphic and correct. I got the Word, Outlook, Office versions at the library and have studied all three and think they are all excellent. I am an instructor and found they got me up to snuff on the differences enough to teach a productive class in Outlook and Word. They provide enough clarity and info that when I needed to know more, I could Google and get all the additional detail I needed. Main BIG difference is the customizable ribbons, but there are several small but very helpful changes.Microsoft Office Word 2010 QuickSteps Overview

Microsoft Office 2010: Advanced (Shelly Cashman Series) ReviewI first came across Shelly Cashman Series in 1998. I used their MS-ACCESS book for my University Class and instantly became a fan. Key feature of this series is a Project based learning. All their titles that i studied had real life Projects and screen by screen instructions on how to complete Projects and acquire necessary skills.
Microsoft Office 2010. I am currently studying for Microsoft Office Certification; i do have Microsoft Office 2010 for Dummies, Teach Yourself Visually Office 2010 by Kate Shoup and Microsoft Office Word 2010/ Microsoft Office Excel 2010 (QuickSteps Series) by John Cronan. Compared to all these titles this one is way better in all categories.
No other book give you sample data to practice with, but with this one you can download sample data files for practice.
There are three books in this series:
i) Microsoft Office 2010 Introductory
ii) Microsoft Office 2010 Advanced [Book Reviewed here]
iii) Microsoft Office 2010 Post Advanced
I skipped Introductory and bought Advanced one. If you are new to Office i would suggest you start with Introductory.
Post Advanced is not published yet, but i am definitely buying that one too as soon as it is available.
On a price side It costs more than other books, but if you attend an institution for Complete Microsot Office Course you would be looking at few thousands in tuition at least. And i believe it is way better than attending any institution, or you may finish this series and then enroll in an institution.
It is a great investment and skills you will acquire would definitely pay off.
Good Luck and hopefully this review would help you in making your purchasing decision.Microsoft Office 2010: Advanced (Shelly Cashman Series) Overview

Microsoft Office 2010 Inside Out ReviewEd Bott and Carl Siechert make a terrific team providing clear susinct technical writing. This book is no exception.
Having said that, I am gravely disappointed by the publisher's marketing move. All the Inside-Out books published by Microsoft Press (O'Reilly) used to come with a CD containing the full book in electronic form. Honestly, my collection of Inside-Out books gather dust on the shelves, but the searchable electronic copies are on my notebook harddrive whenever and wherever I need them. With THIS book, O'Reilly makes the electronic version of the book available as an online web site - but ONLY after you create an account with O'Reilly's Safari Library. You also get free 'Tips', which is a thinly disguised way to market you for more books. I don't always have fast Internet access, and sometimes such access might cost me as much as I paid for the book. If you want to put a copy of the book on your harddrive - pony up for a subscription - the cost of the book no longer includes local electronic storage rights.
It looks like O'Reilly is following the path blazed by the airlines by unbundling services and charging additional fees. Come on! Charge a fair price for the book and give me the electronic version! As a business traveller I'm waiting for the hotel industry to jump on board this sad trend and put coin operated toilet paper dispensers in their rooms.Microsoft Office 2010 Inside Out Overview

Word 2010 Bible ReviewAfter reading almost the entire book, I must say this book is amazing, both for newcomers to Word and old time users. And it covers almost everything. I know my way around in Word pretty well, and still, I became much more informative after reading this book, with so many tips and tricks, some known (for me) and some hidden.
Also, reading this book is a pleasure. I previously also bought "Windows 7 Bible" book in addition to "Windows 7 secrets", and while Windows 7 bible covers more subjects, I loved Windows 7 secrets more simply because the way they write, they're more personal, like a friendly teacher, making some jokes once in a while, and sometimes will talk about other stuff to give you better examples; Windows 7 bible on the other hand was very basic and "dry", too much to the point, way too serious, so I expected the same in "Word 2010 bible" as well. How wrong I was! I was pleasantly surprised by the well-written humorous language, I actually burst out laughing many times in the first few chapters. It was very enjoyable, time well spent, both becoming informative and laughing a lot in the same time.
This is a thick book, and in order to pack so much information into it the fonts are pretty small, smaller than other comparable books, which is a plus for the content you get, but can get your eyes tired sometimes. Also it is just in grayscale, I love some other books that makes things come to life with another color, like blue (Examples, "Windows 7 secrets"; "Word 2010 Inside Out", which is by the way worthless IMO compared to Word 2010 Bible, requiring you to have a CD inserted into your computer to do homework, and while it may work for some, I want to read my books away from my computer, like in bed, or on the porch, etc.)
Bottom line, I compared this book to Word 2010 inside out, Word for Dummies, and so far this book surpasses them all. Recommended.Word 2010 Bible Overview

Excel 2010: The Missing Manual ReviewExcel 2010: the missing manual is part of a growing series of reference manuals for popular software products. Mr MacDonald has also written Access 2010 among other books. A CD with training exercises is not available but a website is available to download the necessary essentials.
Before starting the tutelage, the author describes all the new stuff Microsoft built into this latest version. Throughout the book, there are also many illustrations to help the reader follow the narrative. There are also samples of dialogs that you'll meet in using the program, giving tips on how best to use the dialogs. Interesting sidebars also adds to your learning experience.
The manual targets the absolute novice who hasn't used a spreadsheet before and people who have been using Excel for a while but at a basic level and will transport them to an intermediate level of expertise if so desired. The author starts at the beginning, showing how to open a spreadsheet and then taking a tour of the many features the program has. He slowly and deliberately progresses to adding and moving data, formatting, managing multiple sheets as well as printing your work. Moving on, building formulas and using the many built-in formulas including using the family of "if" statements, math, financial, time, text etc is given high priority. Moving into more interesting fields, List Management, Grouping Data, building templates and creating charts and adding pictures is presented. The program also has clip art and a decent drawing editor that the author shows you how to use.
Moving deeper into Databases, creating Scenarios, Pivot tables, web queries and connecting to a SQL server is next, followed by using Excel with other programs.
The last two chapters cover using VBA in automating tasks. Its pretty rudimentary but its sufficient to show how to record macros. It also shows and describes the macro window, the editors and explains the critical property and methods concerns in programming in Excel. It also shows the value in using variables, looping functions among other essential stuff to get you started in writing macros. Its sufficient to get you started but if you really like using VBA and want to progress beyond this book, you'll need to buy a dedicated book like "Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA" by John Walkenbach.
This review just scratches the surface of what is presented in this 854 page tome and the author does a nice job in explaining the many features. This is a very credible manual and for anyone wanting to improve their spreadsheet skills should consider it.Excel 2010: The Missing Manual Overview

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Office 2010 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) ReviewThis is a handy book for anyone who is completely new to MS Office and needs to grasp it fast. Based on the colors and graphics I'd say it's targeted to young audience/students (high-school, 1st year college). But still handy for anyone who is new to MS Office.
The book consists of 23 chapters, organized in 8 parts:
Part1 - Office features (4 chapters)
Part2 - Word (4 chapters)
Part3 - Excel (4 chapters)
Part4 - Powerpoint (3 chapters)
Part5 - Access (2 chapters)
Part6 - Outlook (2 chapters)
Part7 - Publisher (2 chapters)
Part8 - One note (2 chapters)
Each chapter presents the tasks and functionality in a visually way. This is done by presenting screenshots, with step by step instructions on how to do a certain task, on the side of the screen shot. Every 2 (opponent) pages presents a particular task in this way. For someone completely new to MS Office this is like sitting at your computer and having a personal instructor guiding you step by step.
If you are already familiar with MS Office 2003 or 2007, you may not need this book. You probably be able to use MS office 2010 without it. MS Office 2010 will feel very familiar to you, and you probably just need some time to learn your way around. Pretty soon you'll be up to what you were doing in 2003 and/or 2007. This book also does not particularly show what's new in 2010 compared to 2007. It does mention a few but does not particularly point them out. So you'd probably find this in the MS Office 2010 tutorial it self (or the help function). Still, this book would be handy as a guideline, in case you would want to reassure yourself that you are not overlooking anything or as a reference book. You would go very fast through it. In any case, it gives a good overall picture of MS Office 2010.
There are a few things I miss in this book.
One is something about the history/evolution of MS Office up to this most recent 2010 version. I also miss information on what for type of OS you need for MS Office 2010. And I miss indications to what is new in 2010 that was not available in 2003 or 2007. There are also no questions or specific projects with the chapters. Instructors might have appreciated questions and/or projects with each chapter with which they could assess students.
All by all, this is a very handy book, to anyone new to MS Office, (especially young readers), that needs to grasp MS Office 2010 in a very fast way.
Ps. If you liked this book, you might like Web 2.0: Concepts and Applications (Shelly Cashman) too. This book introduces students to the Web 2.0. concepts. It has more text, but is also very visual with lots of screenshots and examples.Teach Yourself VISUALLY Office 2010 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) Overview

Office 2010 Simplified ReviewI am a advocate user of Microsoft Office. Just recently upgraded from 2003 to 2010. I was really confused the first day I start using 2010, the ribbon was sorta of overwhelming. So i went and got a copy of this book from the library and boy am I glad I did. I love the pictures and the step by step instructions. Learned so much the first day I picked it up, like how to view multiple screens and office live workspace. Now I am buying the book off of Amazon to continue learning but have it as a reference book later. Get this book I promise you want be disappointed.Office 2010 Simplified Overview

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Plain & Simple ReviewDon't let the title fool you with this book. When I saw the title I thought this book would be, as part of the title states, `Simple.' With over 20 years in the field and 10 years working heavily with PowerPoint I thought I would be bored at best with this book. I was surprisingly amazed by this book. With the new Ribbon in Microsoft Office and the new features introduced in PowerPoint 2010, this was an excellent resource for learning where and how to use the new features in PowerPoint 2010.
The book begins with covering the Ribbon and how to use some of the enhanced features in PowerPoint 2010. It then goes into the basics of making a PowerPoint. It covers how to make changes to the Slide Master, which in a support role was always a question from users.
What I enjoyed most was the coverage of the new features. When you consider the amount of new software released and the new features each carries, not including new hardware, and new technologies, it is impossible to keep up with it all. So they way this book covers not only the basics but also the new features in a relatively short book, at 272 pages, is a small treasurer.
The book gives a step-by-step in each chapter as it covers each feature. There is a brief description of the feature and what it is, then a walk-through of using the feature. The time it takes to go through the book and trying the feature can be accomplished within a day, or day and a half.
For anyone wishing to learn PowerPoint for the first time or learn how to use it better this is the book I would recommend this as your source.

Microsoft Word 2010 Inside Out (Inside Out (Microsoft)) ReviewMy main purpose in purchasing this book was to prepare for the Word 2010 Expert certification exam (currently in Beta mode). Microsoft recommends the "Inside Out" series for the Expert level certification exams.
The Bad:
What makes this a tough book to learn from is that no practice files or follow-along content were developed for this book. This is pretty standard practice for these types of books, especially from Microsoft Press, so I was really surprised no such material was developed.
So unless you have lengthy personal documents handy where you can practice making bibliographies, indices, etc., you're left trying to apply the concepts to whatever Word documents you have lying around on your hard drive. Although I did well on the test and probably would not have done so without this book, I spent far more time than I should have on learning the content, because I often had nothing on hand to which I could apply the concepts.
Macros- this book does not prepare you to learn VBA, a subject area for which I bet some people will buy this book. It's well known that no "gold standard" book on Word VBA exists, but all this book does is spend a few pages describing how to record a macro and how to navigate VBE, then directs you to the Word MVP group website to learn VBA by reading posts. The book completely dodges any serious attempt at teaching Word macros.
I also have to point that I ran into more grammatical and spelling errors in this book than I've ever come across in a technology book. Not what you would expect in a word processing book!
The Good:
The free ebook is a very nice touch (requires free registration on Safari Books Online, well worth it to access the ebook).
I passed the Expert test and this is the only book I used for studying. I started out with a decent working knowledge of Word but without this book I would not have passed the exam.
Overall:
If you are trying to get Expert certified in Word, this book will do the trick, as long as you stay extremely patient and apply all the concepts while following along. Just grab the longest Word document you have available and you should be able to find ways to make it work.
So I give 3 stars because I have to ding it heavily for lacking practice files and a thorough discussion of macros, offset in part by coming packaged with a free ebook version and the fact that I was able to use it to pass the test.Microsoft Word 2010 Inside Out (Inside Out (Microsoft)) Overview

Microsoft Word 2010 Plain & Simple Review
With years of experience with older versions of Microsoft Word (my current employer will probably upgrade to Word 2010 a decade after I retire) I felt reasonably qualified to help a friend get a grip on her new Word 2010. I quickly discovered I was barely any help at all. "Well, to do that" I would confidently say, "you go to the...uh, where is that cursed menu?" This book arrived to save me from further embarrassment.
The combination of this book, plus the modern Word interface, makes operations once devilishly arcane, or hard to find, or hard to get just right, a snap. Placing graphics, using Word art, making symbols and arrows (shapes) are all now approachable and usable features even for relatively inexperienced users.
This book is so visually attractive that calling it "Plain & Simple" doesn't seem quite right. In fact, the book is so lavishly illustrated, I suspected it might turn out to be a bit too elementary. Nope. The book effectively gets to the most useful features and covers the most common word processing user scenarios quite thoroughly. It guides you quite painlessly into new territory, like using Building Blocks and Quick Parts to save labor. I appreciate that the wide-format book opens flat for self-study convenience.
I heartily recommend this book to anyone dipping their toes into the unfamiliar waters of Microsoft Press books that actually look beautiful.
